The Ming

The thing that gets me is why this wasn't addressed in the summer. Why??? It really baffles me. By all accounts there were serious doubts about him among the management. We had ample money to spend. There were loads of promising keepers available.

Why fucking wait? Just idiotic.

If our defence wasn't so shit, most of Ming's weaknesses wouldn't be so exposed. He was definitely at fault for the 3rd goal, but he wasn't the only one. If the defence had done their job properly, Ming wouldn't have found himself in that situation.

I'm more worried about his distribution. He fucking sickens my arse the way he plays a stupid short pass to 1 of our back 4, and puts them under undue pressure.

I don't think Mignolet wants to do that. He's being told by Rodgers to do it

I don't doubt that for a minute. And personally I think playing a short ball out of goal can be quite effective. OK, I can understand if the ball is in play and Ming comes under pressure, he might not make good judgement, but when it's ball-in-hand, and he has time to have a wee look, it's fucking sinful to put our defenders under pressure the way he sometimes does. If the option isn't there, don't fucking do it.

He's not winning no matter what he does. He kicks it long we've got no one to challenge for it so we lose possession. He plays it short and let's someone else fuck up

At least with option 1, if we lose possession, we're not losing it on the edge of our own box. Like I said, if the option is there, play it short, if not, then play it long. Or least halfway up the pitch.

Tony Barrett on twitter, summed up my thoughts...

Liverpool should be much more concerned by a keeper going for a loose ball in the six yard box with his feet than anything Balotelli does.

Exactly what i think but in far fewer words.

He is cack.

I wonder who's in worse form at the moment, him or mario. To be fair, they both have mitigating circumstances-mario has no strike partner and his service is mostly shit, and migs is playing behind a circus of a defence, and keepers usually play as well as their defence overall.
I still think that gerrard is hugely linked to our current keeper and defensive crisis. The cb's need support with our style of play with the fb's playing in the top half of the pitch. When we get countered we're left with the new cb partnership and a ponderous gerrard, if mascherano was there and gerrard further forward I think we'd be much much better off defensively and migs would have more confidence in his defence.
Solution is to buy a proper dm in January and move gerrard forward/rest him more.

What new keeper options do we have?

No point signing a promising up comer like De Gea or Courtois unless we can coach him well. And from all reports, Achterberg is shit.

So someone like Cech or Casillas then? Not really convinced.

I'd prefer sign someone in the 23-26 age bracket, and making sure our GK coaching staff is competent.

Friedel

I'd definitely be all for getting Valdes' signature. At worst, he'd be competition for Ming and might keep him on his toes.

Poor the Ming.

He's not that bad.

I'd have Lovrens head on a platter before Ming's, Lovren has been a disaster so far.

It was fucking ludicrous. Even more so given our back keeper is utterly shit too. We didn't even need to get involved in a debate re replacing Mignolet, just buy a top young keeper and say he's Jones' replacement and for competition for first team.

There were a number of keepers on the move including those making a name for themselves at the world cup. Meanwhile we were spending 100m+ on every other position going.

Now we faced with either sticking with a clearly fragile keeper or replace him with possibly the weakest back-up keeper in premiership football.

It's terrible planning, no excuse for it.

He's shite. Neto that is.

I'd go for Begovic. Who we should have signed last summer.
Or Cech if Chelsea decide to sell him.

Am I the only one who thinks Begovic is overrated? Not sure if he played every game last season for stoke, but they conceded 52 goals. Only 2 more than Ming conceded.

Lovren has indeed been muck but Ming was shite last season when Lovren wasnt at the club so i dont think we can blame him for the current defensive clusterfuck.

I don't agree Begovic would've been any better. Yes Butland couldn't displace him at Stoke but it's not as if Begovic was ever going on to bigger things, only to maybe fill a few lines of a story, the general concensus then was that he would lose his place when Butland came in...and now Butland is gone to Derby on loan. Vorm the same, now sitting on the bench at spurs after having his name thrown around to go to bigger things. They just have a mid table level, Migs is probably among them, he was given the opportunity to step up and it doesn't seem to have worked.

The time is now to change it though, not in the summer. In the league we've still only conceded 4 more than both Chelsea and Citeh and the same as the scum yet we apparently have a shambles of a defence. Sort out the backline and set pieces to some extent and when Sturridge gets back hopefully he can add some goals. Wouldn't mind Markovic, Can and Lamb-lama exploding in the mean time though! We're still hanging around with the teams with aspirations for 4th so it's not all doom and gloom.

I'm quite sympathetic to Rodgers about this, whilst not denying that something has to be done.

I didn't agree with the way he bombed Reina out of the club - that smacked too much of a pre-planned show of who's the boss rather than a rational decision. Keep someone like that and make him work for you until you have a genuinely top replacement ready to come in, rather than rush to burn your bridges.

But in more general terms Rodgers has hardly been spoilt for choice in terms of rebuilding. There's a great tradition of managers building great teams by paying whatever it takes to bring in the best keeper around (with a big dominant personality) and a CB who is an obvious leader for the defence. But who was/is available to Rodgers? I don't see many options in either position. Lovren seemed a prudent choice for CB, but what keepers are around? The fact Hart is seen by many pundits as the top keeper is a sign of how poor the standard is at the moment. I think in the short term the only viable answer is to coach the existing players better. Maybe work with Lovren and Mignolet as a pair on the training pitch, drilling it into them how they should interact, building up a relationship between the two.
