Transfer window nearly upon us

Would he be good for us?

Yes, I think he could fill the role that Loic Remy was supposed to fill. Lucescu's Shakhtar have been playing similar football to us – lots of technically excellent players who are made to work hard within a rather rigid system. Those who adapted in Shakhtar (not to mention Ukrainian weather conditions) are already pretty well-prepared for playing in Europe. That's why I think Willian and Fernandinho adapted so well in EPL – they acquired their work ethic at Shakhtar. It's very different than signing Brazilians out of Brazil and I think if you don't have a few years to wait until they adapt, it's worth paying a premium.

I would also take a look a Douglas Costa, he is a real talent.

Suprised Douglas Costa is still knocking about and no one had signed him. How come he hasn't moved to a so called bigger team or league? He's always looked ridiculously talented.

Remarkable that we haven't brought in a striker - even on a short term loan deal or something.

Brodgson is betting the house on an injury prone striker staying fit.

If he doesn't we have no chance of 4th, and he might have little chance of keeping his job.

James Pearce said few weeks back we're doing nothing by way of transfers, and he's usually on the money.

Disappointing alright, but you'd hazard a guess it's FSG's shout.

Definitely need a striker, but who would you bring in?

I think there was some genuine interest in Higuain which has now died down and looks buried until the end of the season.

Who else of note could we have gone after?

I said months ago we wouldn't be signing anybody. Certainly nobody substantial. Why don't you all just listen to me in the first place and do away with the speculation and anxiety? Relax. We're not signing anybody.

Thommo said yesterday (or day before I forget) that he thought we'd sign a striker at the end of the window. Not sure if he knows something, is just guessing or just hoping !

We have some 7 CBs. Don't really need another.

If we keep this 3-4-3 as the basic system, we'll need at least 5 dependable CBs in the squad. Here's what we got:

Sakho – good as LCB
Skrtel – best used as middle CB
Can – super all-around player, but his best position is probably midfield
Lovren – disastrous start, needs to turn it around
Toure – cult figure, but will be gone in the summer, probably
Ilori – barely plays at Bordeaux
Wisdom – plays as RB, not sure he has enough quality for LFC
Coates – has no future here

So we have only 2-3 CBs we can really count on next season. Even if Lovren does turn it around, we can definitely use another quality CB to free Can for midfield. Unfortunately I don't watch Ukrainian premier league any more, so I have no idea if this Drago lad is any good. I would buy someone who is really dominant in the air; we currently don't have anyone on the Hyypia, Terry, Ramos or Pique level.

Re the need for a striker, we should really let Lambert go given we're likely to recoup our money in January from the likes of Palace/West Brom etc.

He's nowhere near mobile enough to play in our system or get a start, and leads to heartsink moments when he's our option off the bench for a late goal (our play deteriorated sharply once he came on). He's just nowhere near good enough with no prospect whatsoever of getting any better.

That 4m would come in very handy in getting a pacy alternative in, even if they're not the finished article. At least we could target someone in line with our overall philosophy.

A viable plan B Lambert is not.

If we're selling anyone it has to be Balotelli. We'll get more money for him, and he's offering nothing but a disruptive influence. I'm not saying Lambert is a better player, but he's a positive influence who will do all he's asked. The money we'd get for him wouldn't do much either.

Ideally we wouldn't have either, we'd have better than both.

Lambert does offer a viable plan B, he's come on and scored a goal of important goals when needed. Balotelli on the other hand is not and really should go.

Still banging the mario drum

We're heading towards the end of the transfer window and it could be argued that had we brought in a half decent striker in the past few weeks we could very well be heading to a league cup final and avoiding a replay with Bolton.

We're signing nobody, City are signing Bony, that's one of the problems of not being a moneybags club.

I reckon the owners are weary about forking out after buying strikers in the summer, and I understand, while I don't think Mario will come good investment wise it would be stupid to write him off after half a season

I'd agree with that about most players, but I don't about him. Did you see him before the game, when our bench came running out, except for Balotelli slouching his way across the pitch like some sulky schoolboy on his way to an exam? He's poison on and off the field. I'd give him away tomorrow.
