Where's Moreno?

I wonder if Moreno was asked to do it with 20 seconds remaining in the match .... or that was all his own brainless idea to leave our CBs (who we all know are not the speediest) without cover ?

Same goes for anyone else actually defending his actions at the end of the match (this thread not being about his overall play but about the last 20 seconds of the Villareal match), should he really have bombed forward with a decent result in the bag ? Not in my book, it was crass stupidity (ditto Lucas who I thought overwise had a very good game).

They were asked to bomb forward, yes. But what I was actually defending during this post was his forward thrust when he nearly scored. If you read on a bit more you'll see I had my wires crossed as to which passage of play RN's point related to (a result of only seeing the highlights), Hansern kindly pointed me in the right direction.

So yes, he shouldn't have been caught so out of position at the end - on that we agree. I'm not sure what relavance the centrebacks' lack of pace has though, it wasn't relevant for the other 90-something minutes when both fullbacks were being asked to attack.

At the end of it all, it was a quality move from Villareal to exploit the space that had opened up - that's clearly going to be a big danger on Thursday when we are having to chase a result.

I'm far from Moreno's biggest fan. This is how I see him:

Pros:

Incredibly aggressive, good at pressing high up the pitch
Quick, both in attack and at getting back
Young enough to work with, he's progressed a bit since Klopp came here too

Cons:

Positionally poor - often a combination of instruction and a natural instinct to follow the play
Indecisive - he makes too many poor decisions, he fails to track runners and lets too many players get in behind him too easily
Poor tackling & marking- he's shown this a number of times, he dives in, he doesn't pick up the player he's meant to mark and it costs us again and again from setpieces and crosses into the box. He also has this fucking annoying tendency to throw his whole body into a challenge side on, it's one of the most potentially dangerous and chronically stupid attempts at a "tackle" I've seen at this level.

In the Summer we'll keep him and we'll buy a more defensive option, that's a good balance to have, horses for courses. I would give him a big reprieve for the goal against Villareal though, because our gameplan was clearly to utilise the fullbacks high up the pitch, to press Villareal back. It worked in an attacking sense, but the opposition got behind him too many times, which can be attributed to both Klopps tactics and Moreno's own failings. He attacked though when that big opportunity arose towards the end, which is EXACTLY what he should have done, no one would have said anything if he'd scored.

If we'd have put some attackers on earlier, the onus wouldn't have been on the rest of the team to chase a goal, he was ballsy enough to go for it, which is commendable.

If we can get our money back / make profit, sell him.

Defensively he makes way too many errors, too often.

Yeah but if he had any nouce at all he would have squared the ball and we would have been 1 up. Even in the small time he has played for us Gomez showed he was better defensively and just as good going forward and he's 5 years younger at only 18. Moreno back up for me next season
