I know there's bound to be plenty of contenders, so i'll try and put in a few qualifiers.

Which player, who has been in the game at a decent level (top flight) for a long time, has had you incredulous that managers keep on playing, giving contracts to, and buying?

When there seems to be almost nothing to demonstrate he is actually very good at football? There's always been players that generate heated debate among Liverpool fans over the years: Houghton, Crouch, Allen, and of course Lucas. So let's not do them again.

I've created this thread because of the Chelsea - Everton game, and conversations (mainly swearing) about a certain player.

Tom Cleverley.

Or "Fucking" Tom Cleverley as the Bitters prefer to call him. Rarely have I heard such vicious, almost unanimous hatred of a player. I thought it was largely due to the comedy gift Martinez, describing him thus:

“I think you do not have a better English player. Technically, he is as good as you get. The way he executes, how he reads the game, for me he is one of the most sensational you are going to see in Premier League history.
“I wouldn’t sell him for any money in the current market. I want to see him go from strength to strength because I know there is so much more to come.”

And we thought Rodgers had oversold the Welsh Xavi!

But he was equally reviled and dismissed as a manager's favourite at United, and was extraordinarily unpopular there. It takes a certain quality of player to replicate that at another entirely new club.

But I can see why. He's the best ever example of a player whose fans would say that he is "a player you have to understand football to appreciate". You know "neat"

Except he genuinely doesn't seem to have any fans. Anywhere. Ever. I've seen him play quite a few times, and perhaps the 5-0 thrashing is an unfair start point for any critical assessment.

But fuck me, he was a special kind of shite. He scurries about a lot - extremely slowly - pointing and gesturing to show his in-game intelligence, and when he gets the ball, he stands still, then runs in a circle, then either loses it, or just passes it back to the player he got it from.

And that's it. No creativity. No goal threat. No tackling. No interceptions. Nothing.

He was genuinely ENTIRELY useless. And he so very often is. And he's been doing it for 6 years. And not only at little Championship strugglers, or hopeful teams like Hull.

At Manchester United. And now Everton.

It's fucking amazing.

Does Tony Hibbert count? He must have played RB for Everton for years without having any unique talents. He liked a tackle but that was about it. Did he ever score or assist or make decent defensive contributions? He's always been a part of their furniture. I love that video where he shuffles the ball from one side to the other and does NOTHING with it.

Does Phil Neville count? He did fuck all and yet has won loads.

I sense a pattern...

Kevin Kilbane - continuing on a theme.

110 international caps.

Over 500 league appearances - about half of them in the Premier League

Kilbane! Another solid addition.

He's actually building a career as a pundit now. You may never be rid of him.

Jesus. He was brutal.

Peacock for Newcastle was woeful.

Kilbane waa decent and Neville was good.

Some of you have terrible memories.

I'm surprised Lucas hasn't been thrown in yet.

John O'Shea won a shed load considering his lack of talent compared with his teammates

Came in to post Toby Hibbert

Fucking Rory Delap obviously.

And his long throws. I swear he was only selected because every throw in becomes a "corner" for him. Is he the one who started the whole long throw trend? Smaller teams started using this tactic for awhile.

And he always seem to have a minder who will pass him a towel to wipe the ball. I mean wtf is that? He took ages doing that and none of the refs had the balls to call him out.

Closer to home. Jermaine Pennant. He is playing in the Singapore league now and I hate seeing his face on tv as a pundit. Seriously Jermaine fucking Pennant. He was always standing around looking smug and talking some shite.

And for his football, he is playing in a "Pirlo" role now. He is shit even in a terrible league. He couldn't run even though he is only 33. So much for a marquee signing when he was left out of a cup final. And he managed to play in a European cup final. Rafa really was a miracle worker back then.

I came in here to post that.

So instead I'll go for Justin Edinburgh. Over 200 games for Spurs over a 10 year span despite being a complete and utter donkey.

He even had a tv show with Ruddock for a while. Teaching kids how to play football.

He actually looks likely to leave Singapore because he won't budge from his demand of £23.5k a month. The chairman at Tampine Rovers had this to say about Jermaine Pennant:

Someone of his stature and, frankly, quite iconic status engenders an excitement and vibe which was much needed for Singapore football in the early stages of the season.

Just to reiterate - he said that about Jermaine. Pennant.

I think Dave Challinor started that trend when Aldo was managing Tranmere. They had a decent cup run due to him being able to throw the ball over half the length of the pitch. There were even a few pundits suggesting an England call up for him as a plan c if England were losing and needed a goal in the last 10 minutes.

The fact that for quite a while Hodgson used to insist on picking him for England tells you all you need to know about both of them.

Going back in time, the most extreme example of this that I've ever seen is Ray Wilkins. How in the name of all that's holy did he EVER get such a list of big clubs on his CV?

On the same topic this was one of the news headlines which came out of his mouth after he played his last S-league game.

Football: Even Lionel Messi would not have helped S-League, says Jermaine Pennant

Boyhood Kopite too. [Shudders]

What about a couple from our recent past...

Paul Konchesky

And of course, the big one (Champions League medal and all...)

Djimi Traore

When I saw this picture, the first thing which came to my mind was "Who won the game?"

That guy who seemed to go up and down each season with every relegated and then newly promoted side. Geoff Horsfield?
