Speaking of Meireles -
It was funny how Meireles - Maxi - Kuyt - Suarez was such a smooth quartet in Kenny's caretaker season. Kuyt scored 10 league goals, including 3 against the Mancs in a game, and then a goal each in 5 consecutive games. Meireles scored all his 5 Liverpool goals that season under Kenny, including this lung-bursting half-of-pitch run down the middle to finish off Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge:
And Maxi? 7 goals in 3 games in the last 4 games, including 2 hat-tricks. In comparison, Suarez scored just 4 goals in those 5 months, but played a role in all 3 Kuyt's goals against the Mancs.
After a tumultus spell under Hodgson, an unheralded pair and a player known more for his workrate than ball skills supported a budding superstar and contributed 20 goals between them in those 4 to 5 months. If there's anything the 2014/15 supporting cast can draw on for inspiration and motivation, that's probably a good place to start.
