Thought this might be an interesting thread. Thinking about players who didn't make it here over the years but continued their careers else where - what have they done?

Main one that springs to mind for me is John Welsh - now captain of Preston.

Paletta - played in the World Cup for Italy!

Any other notables?

Kacaniklic and Ince are two of the recent past who have left and gone on to do reasonably well.

I think some of the Spanish/Latin ones from Rafa's days have done ok: I think Barragan is a La Liga player now, as are San Jose and Insua.

Alou Diarra is another from a while ago. He went on to do quite well for France I think.

Obviously Jay Spearing who had a very good season with Bolton. Darren Potter has made a decent career for himself with MK Dons in division one. Zak Whitbread has just signed for Derby and Daniel Ayala has just signed for Middlesbro.

Mikel San Jose - 100+ appearances for Bilbao since leaving us.

Jack Hobbs has carved out a decent career for himself in the Championship.

Spearing as well - and I think he's good enough for a mid-lower tier PL club.

Alou Diarra never played for us

Wasn't he on our books? Or at the least, wasn't he once in our squad on Champ Manager?!

He was, but he was loaned out as soon as he signed. Think he played one pre season game or something.
Basically he never wore red.

What ever happened to that really promising kid who went to Fulham a few years back? Dalle Valle or something like that.

Not done well. Plays for some Belgian club now.

Mikel San Jose as mentioned earlier by dmishra is the most successful one of the more recent departures I think.

Partridge had an injury-wrecked career and quit early, and is now back with the club as a physiotherapist (I know, right).

Guthrie did very well previously in the Championship at Newcastle, but his career has drifted in the past few seasons.

I was going to say that Nemeth had finally gotten over his injuries and was rebuilding his career at Roda JC in the Dutch league (8 goals, 6 assists in 24 games last season) - then I saw his Wiki entry saying Roda and him had mutually agreed to terminate the contract a couple of weeks back.

Gulacsi is the starting keeper for Red Bull Salzburg and played in goal for them in the Europa League as well, seems to be doing well there.

Mihaylovic (so?), the keeper has done alright hasn't he?

Had to Google for this one. Nikolay Mihaylov. He actually won the Dutch league title with FC Twente under McClaren. Moved to Serie A last season, joining Hellas Verona, but didn't play any games in the league. Looks like he's 3rd choice there.

What ever happened to Nemeth?, thought he would make it for us but no.

Le Tallec has played in top-flight French teams since leaving, occasionally jumping ship following relegation.

Pongolle has disappeared to Russia and isn't really fit to lace Le Tallec's boots anymore.

Dani Pacheco has just joined Real Betis. They were relegated to Segunda Division this season but 23 years of age and a gig in a 52,000 seat stadium in southern Spain isn't catastrophic, but it's about as much as he can hope for, seems a nice lad.
