Can you point out the (good) teams that don't play with one?

Obviously you want all your players to be as good in all aspects as possible. But it's evidently essential to have a midfielder who's priority is to defend.
when the attackers are; silva, nasri, aguero etc then have yaya sit and contribute little going forwards is acceptable
when the attackers are; downing, carroll, henderson etc then have a holding midfielder contribute little going forwards isn't acceptable
in an ideal world our attackers would use the platform of a solid defense and holding midfielder to attack with impunity, alas it's not an ideal world.
So buy better attackers.
Exactly.

I see no issue with 5 outfield players attacking and 5 defending.

Considering your love for attacking fullbacks neil, it still surprises me you don't want a DM.

I don't think the balance of attack is correct and yes, I absolutely conceed we need better attackers.

Can anyone direct me to the Stewart Downing thread please ?
this thread is little like downing himself; all over the place, and ultimately pointless.

Read what I typed Neil, you idiot.

Bit uncalled for that Ryan

"idiot"? Really?

Fair enough. Apologies Neil.

I didn't think Downing had improved much against City this evening. He is still reluctant to take his man on. He seemed to regard himself as Enrique's assistant tonight. Every time the ball came to him, he looked for Enrique to lay it off to.

I thought he had a decent first half. Second half he pulled a bit of a disappearing act.

I really really wish Enrique had a bit more about him attacking wise. He gets into such great attacking positions and with his pace should be making more of them. I wonder if this is why he doesn't get into the national side.

no harm done :)

Yeah he was great tonight. No goals, no assists, no decent balls into the box, a couple of half chances blazed wide and a sitter missed in front of the kop.

Lethal

He is a good enough player for a spot in the squad. Especially when we have only two recognized players who like to play out wide....

But i'd take Albert Riera over Downing in a heart beat...

and that says it all !

Yeah, he wasn't exactly good tonight, he just wasn't anonymous.

Still a long way to go.

He's helped us get into a Cup Final after beating three Premiership teams on the way, he's played a part. Well done to Downing and the other new players, a Wembley appearance in your first full season!

Fuck off you moaning bastards :)

He had a good game and we reached the final. Thats positive and something to build on.

Well yeah, obviously a good performance always consists of the above. No one was saying he was playing like Messi, it was a vast improvement and him and Enrique doubled up on Richards alot and caused him problems and he looked alot more willing to run at players and try to beat them. Like I said, it wasn't 'brilliant', it was a start and an improvement, worth acknowledging anyway.

What Jexy said anyway.

This game of oneupmanship is pathetic.

Aston Villa: The video fake that fooled Liverpool bosses before £20 million Downing moveASTON Villa banked £20 million for star winger Stewart Downing – after Liverpool FC bosses were fooled by this FAKE footage of the England man’s skills.

The Anfield club’s top brass vowed to sign Downing after being dazzled by YouTube clips of him kicking balls into five wheelie bins from long range.

But American duo John Henry and Tom Werner only later realised that the footage had been digitally enhanced as part of a viral video campaign to boost season ticket sales at Villa.
Downing still joined Liverpool from Villa in a £20 million deal last summer after handing in a transfer request to force through his move.

But he has flopped at Anfield so far and is still awaiting his first goal or assist in the Premier League.

“There was some footage of Stewart where he was, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it was brilliant,” said chairman Werner.

“John and I said: ‘Oh my God, this player is brilliant, we’ve got to figure out a way to make a deal with him’.”
The doctored Downing footage was the handiwork of video expert Nick Finney and other members of Villa’s media and marketing team.
Other past and present Villa stars, including James Milner, Carlos Cuellar, Ashley Young and John Carew, also featured in the viral campaign.
With a little editing suite help, Cuellar aimed a precise punt at a noisy groundsman to stop his lawnmower disturbing an interview, Carew fixed a faulty light at Villa Park with an amazing volley, and Young struck the crossbar from the halfway line, despite being blind-folded.
Virals are short and snappy videos which become popular through the process of internet sharing, typically through social networking websites and email.
The cleverly-crafted, home-produced clips were launched by the club on YouTube and have been viewed by hundreds of thousand people across the world.

So we were really duped after all....

At least it wn't be 20M. More like 16? I can't see any Add on's, since we've been "ad" on this one. Can you believe we went for him over Mata. Kenny's preference for Brittash is just not working

OHJESUSFUCKINGCHRIST !

This is being run on 'Central News', which is the ITV local news show for The Midlands.

Lazy shit journalism.

Please tell everyone how you know we didn't bid for Mata ?

Please also bear in mind that Mata gave an interview after his move, in which he made a great deal of the fact that Torres (a friend of his) encouraged his move to London.

You of all people should know not to let facts get in the way of a good moan about Stwart downing the drain

are they real werner quotes ? embarrassing if true .

Anyway not as embarrassing as Downing banging on today that he's back in form . Well in fairness he's probably right , 'in form' for him means 'just average'.

Why me "of all people" ?

If I think he's 'Meh' I'll say so.

I don't reckon I'd tag some nonsensical "I wish Raffa was here, he'd have signed all good players" guff on the end.

You because of your constant presence on the board, and great knowledge of all things LFC amigo

Raffa definitely signed guff, but he also signed some world class players. S'all
