Kai Havertz asks to leave Bayer Leverkusen

To be fair, Abraham and Odoi have been really shit in recent games. Can't blame the manager for looking elsewhere. Mount is doing pretty well

Abraham has a decent record in the Prem this year and scored in his last game. I would've thought he'd be worth persisting with. Hudson-Odoi hasn't come along as expected, though.

I'm just annoyed we're going to miss out on Havertz.

People saying that chelsea can't defend, they've got about the 9th best record in the league (so average, not great) and their owner is now spending money like its going out of fashion and he stumped up for the worlds most expensive goal keeper, so what's saying they wont go out and spend 200mill this summer on defenders to improve on that 9th place? And then combine that with all these midfielders and forwards they're buying, and they're already in the top 3....
City have lost 9 games this season, chelsea are 9pts behind them and are making huge improvements to try and catch the pair of us.

I see what you’re saying, but they’re over 30 points behind us. That’s a lot of catching up.
Two of the best managers in the world vs lamps. He’s done a great job, but regardless of how much money you give him, they won’t overtake us or city in a hurry .

They will be zero points behind us soon.

If we sit still we will absolutely get passed by. You can't get any more out of this team than it's already given.

Its not writing off our rivals, its pointing out their flaws. Chelsea arent a very good defensive side and seem tactically inept under Lampard to sustain a title bid over a season at this stage.
Adding 3 new attacking elements will move them closer but not fix everything.

It will be a massive blow if they get Havertz though. I’d love us to sign him.

We posted a revenue of 533 million last year compared to Chelsea's 452 million. Since then we've become champions of England, champions of the World, but don't have a pot to piss in. On the other hand Chelsea are splashing some 150 million in the transfer market. Incredible really.

We used to laugh at that argument 2 years ago and now we are seeing people use the same faulty logic to write off our rivals.
Exactly.

Can we keep up the level of the past 2-3 seasons ? The lads only have so many seasons in them at the highest level without sufficient depth to the squad to rest them when necessary. Hopefully the 4 months off during the lockdown will have given them time to recuperate and now it's just a case of honing them for the new season.

Come down off our highest level however and we have already seen from the restart that we are far from the team that steamrollered the league and made two consecutive CL finals. United & Chelsea may not have Klopp at the helm but they can and will throw money at putting together title challenging squads, never mind City (who have likely only not yet gone into the market due to CAS and are waiting to find out the result of the hearing).

We saw ourselves how just 2-3 top players (VvD, Alisson & Fabs) can totally transform the team. Chelsea are getting there, United not far off and City again just those 2-3 players to take them back to their previous levels

We had one of the best attacks and added the best CB in the World and the best GK in the World.
It was a bit different imho.

But we definetly need to improve our squad this summer. The drop in quality behind Firmino, Mane and Salah is to big, and we need more quality upfront to sustain a challenge on four fronts next season.

The fact that we were in for Werner shows that we know what needs doing. Just because we failed to agree on his coming here doesn’t change that.

So saying, I’d dearly love Harvetz here.

How is it incredible?
They are owned by a massive crook with billion of private funds to play with.
We are not.

We've always relied on selling before buying, we've seen it when we sold Masch Alonso Torres Sterling, Now Suarez & Coutinho.

It's simple, we don't have owners who are multi-billionaires.....we've invested a lot in the training ground, academy & anfield if you hadn't noticed.

I'd be surprised if our net spend over the decade surpassed 100m, CHelsea City Utd Arsenal are 3-4x that.

Our net cash out on transfers since FSG took over (to end of season 2019) is just shy of £400m.

Ok so I make it around 230 odd mill.

I took my figures from the accounts, so they include all spending (so includes agent fees, contract renewals, transfer levies).

This is what's in the accounts. If you look at the full value of deals (i.e. ignoring impact of instalment payments) the net spend is > £500m.

Hope the table below reads OK.

Technically this is giving FSG credit for spend in the transfer window before they took over in October 2010 (Hodgson's transfer window).

We posted a revenue of 533 million last year compared to Chelsea's 452 million. Since then we've become champions of England, champions of the World, but don't have a pot to piss in. On the other hand Chelsea are splashing some 150 million in the transfer market. Incredible really.

Chelsea net spend:
17/18 -£40mill
18/19 -£120mill
19/20 +£85mill

Us net spend:
17/18 +£20mill
18/19 -£130mill
19/20 +£25mill

So over the last 3yrs, they've got a net spend of negative 5mill, 5mill up.Whilst winning the UEFA cup and the FA cup (get fuck all money for this).
Over the same period, we're 85mill in the hole, whilst winning the league, champions league, runners up in the league, runners up in the champions league (get shit loads of money for this).

So you'd think, as a bare minimum, we'd have as much money as them to spend this summer.

In their last published accounts (2019) Chelsea lost nearly £100m and increased their debt (presumably to Abramovich) by £240m to £1.02bn. Our equivalent debt balance was £129m, £79m of which was to FSG.
If they don't have money to spend, Abramovich will provide it.

I'm really confused. The club's gone on a charm offensive for some time now, persuading us of their bottomless appetite for incremental gains. Throw-ins, nutrition, fitness, the Kirby complex i.e. no stone left untouched.

Yet, recruitment is not one area this desire extends to for the new season.

I get that the global pandemic has fostered a great deal of financial uncertainty and dampened our desire to spend, but if Chelsea or City to catch up spending their oil money next season, we would have to spend significantly more to entice the right players while being part of the chasing pack again.

Those clubs had better get through the front door. I reckon City will simply get a huge fine, a massive clip on the ear and that would be it.

Our net cash out on transfers since FSG took over (to end of season 2019) is just shy of £400m.
An average of £40m per season budget outlay from the owners, our operating profit is approaching on that level year-on-year, which means FSG's goal of self sustaining club is about to materialise. That is far more important to them as businessmen, and far less important for us as a fan (paid customer).

Really the outlay shouldn't be THAT concerning, when the value of the club has gone from $300 million to $2bn. On paper they've made $1.7 bn. The net spend thing is nonsense. Oh and don't give me any shit about cash flow. The lizards have the cash, they just don't have the flow.

Letting Havertz and Werner go to Chelsea is criminal. Jesus, this club frustrates me sometimes. Sitting on top of the world, PL and CL holders ready to cement our position and we do nothing to secure the future. Nothing, it's 2005-2009 again. Yeah we bought a few back then but we were penny pinching. We lost players Rafa wanted like Javi Martinez, Dani Alves, Agüero, Silva etc.

Agent Rudiger has already tapped him up mate, he's off to chelski. We're getting Mbappe

Think what it’s going to be like when the Transfer Window has actually slammed open and we haven’t bought anyone!!!!

I’m quite beside myself with angst at the whole situation.

If anything our current owners arent nothing like the period Modo is referring to.

Werner is actually the only transfer business done by anyone in the top half of the PL so far.

And Havertz has agreed personal terms with Chelsea.
And Chelsea also bought Ziyech.
City bought some Brasilian right back.
