After strolling to victory in last seasons Prediction League (Div 2), I feel I'm ready to give the bookies a good shoeing this season. I want to put a whole £1 on each of my predictions (individual bets, not accumulators) and see how my £10 stake looks at the end of the season.
I presume all the sites give pretty similar odds, so which is easiest to use for a complete beginner.

Boozer, you'd be crazy to bet anwhere else than Betfair. Whereas Ladbrokes, Hills etc would typically give you 8/1 for say a scoreline like Liverpool 2 man Utd 1 you will probably get nearer to 10/1 on Betfair. Over the course of a season that will add up to quite a difference to your overall balance.

If you do decide to join Betfair, if you enter my "referral code" 4NTVCHAFP you will get £25 added to your account after you place your first £25's worth of bets and I'll get £20 added to my account.

I might even sneak a look at your predictions and invest a few quid as you were remarkably consistent last season.

Edit: I just remembered - I forgot to add that Betfair's minimum bet is £2 so you would have to double your stake. If you want, we could do the bets together based on your predictions (i.e. £1 each) through my account and at the end of the season we split the winnings?

Pesam is right with Betfair being the best option, although it depends on how many people bet on the correct score market.

A match which attracts little activity can actually end up with odds less than you can get from a traditional bookmaker so have a little look around. There are plenty of odds-comparison sites out there that will do the running around for you.

I know quite a bit about this because I am doing a PhD on the subject of E-Betting Business Models.

It's true that the liquidity on certain less popular games does affect the price on Betfair but not on Premier League games which are very popular and will be the ones on which Boozer is predicting.

An example from tonights game is that the average price tonight on Spurs 2-1 Barcelona is about 10/1 with the majority of high street bookies (9/1 at a couple and 11/1 at Blue Square and Sky Bet) but can be backed at 12.5/1 on Betfair. Even allowing for Betfair's 5% charge on winning bets this represents a big difference especially over the period of a season.

No pressure after that testimony!

I've had a look at the first weeks fixtures on PaddyPower and the worst odds are 9/2, and there aren't many results that short. So averaging 2 from 10 each week would see me up, even at the shortest odds. I can do that.

You know it makes sense.

We can experiment with this then - you bet with the High St. bookies and I'll do the same bets on betfair and we'll see what difference there is in overall profit (y'see the way I am taking for granted there will be a profit - Boozer = profit).

I'm not questioning you. I just wanted an idea of the odds, but Betfair don't show them unless you set up an account.

I know you're not doubting me Booz but it would be interesting to see how much betfair beats the Hight St. bookies over the period of a season. You can check the odds of the correct score on betfair without an account but the markets won't be up for this until nearer the time i.e. a week before kick-off.

I'm not expecting too much from the first few weeks, as there's no form to go off, but here we go. I went with Paddypower cos I'm only betting a quid a game.

Chelsea v Hull 3-0 5/1

Are those Betfair's prices? They're nearly 2 points a game better.
Yup, Betfair prices are considerably better than High St bookies and over a period of a season it can make a huge difference.

One thing to mention, there is a 5% commission on winning bets on Betfair so the winnings work out very slightly lower than the prices you get.
That was better than I expected. My £10 stake is now at £22.50 with 3 correct scores.

Excellent stuff Boozer, my £18 stake (only did 9 games, was too late for Chelsea game and had to do £2 bets due to betfair minimum) is now worth £38.70 (after commission paid).

I'm not ignoring you boozer but I'm still having internet issues at home and am struggling to log in on here and Betfair. According to my "interent guy" he will have me up-and-running by the weekend so I will rejoin this challenge - I've got faith in you.
