Opps. Benfica 3-3 Rangers. 2 points lost rather than a point gained.

I tell you all - if Klopp is our "Renew the Faith" man - i.e. 2nd coming of Shanks, then when Gerrard becomes manger it will be the 2nd coming of Bob Paisley - I can even imagine Gerrard looking like Paisley as he gets older. It is going to happen eventually.....

I wonder if we will see the Rangers model and decide to push more loan players that way.

What helped Paisley cope with the huge drop in charisma after Shankly was the fact that he made the team a bit more charismatic on the pitch, playing a more expansive stylle. That seems unlikely to happen if Gerrard follows Klopp.

Does that mean Gerard will end up punching JJ?

I did think Wilson would end up there but maybe they couldnt cover his wages. Id say this is likely to be Gerrards last season in Glasgow either way. If he wins it hes done the impossible and sticking around is unlikely to boost his stock much, if Celtic do overhaul them he will probably feel hes taken them as far as he can given the financial disparity.

Have to think a lower half PL team would be willing to take a punt on him next summer if he brings the title to Ibrox. Brighton or Newcastle maybe

I’m sure I read that Rangers net spend is a fair bit higher than Celtics recently. Did I imagine that?

He has to leave Rangers and prove himself at a tougher league until then there is no point hailing him as the future manager of lfc. We have not seen a decent manager from the Scottish league transitioning to the PL successfully, have we? When there was the old 1st division, yes but the PL era (If memory serves me correctly)

It would be interesting to see where he ends up next. There are a few teams who are a bit stale with long term managers - Burnley, Crystal Palace, Brighton.

I actually think if he won the SPL this year he would look to mount a defence, that is an experience very few managers get and would likely continue to help his development more than going lower down the PL/Championship

Depends what you mean by transitioning successfully. Martin O'Neil and Rodgers have done well after a spell in Scotland but both had performed in the PL previously.

Martin O'Neil and Rodgers took over at Celtic.

I could probably guide Celtic to a couple of Scottish premier league titles.

In 20/21

Rangers spent 10.35M, sold 700k
Celtic spent 11.4M, sold 1.4M

Although, to illustrate how much of a joke that league is, the next biggest spender was Hibs with 250k

The previous season, Rangers net spend was about 10M. Celtic spent 18M but sold Kieran Tierney for 24M so that's probably the the cause of the net spend difference your thinking off.

For a good few years Celtic's spending and wage bill was more than the entire rest of the league stuck together. Supporting Celtic is like walking into your corner shop and saying you hope Amazon are fucking them

The main problem with the Scottish league is surely that there's just no way to escape being dragged into that mentality where the foot goes off the pedal when you're not playing the big three or four teams. The standard below that is so shite that no manager would even try to crank up the intensity when they play, say, Ross County. So no matter how great you do in the big games, it isn't preparing you at all for the remorseless slog of the English PL. If you've managed in England first, and done well, and then moved to Scotland, you might fare okay when you return to England, but I don't see starting your managerial career there is any real help to Gerrard if he genuinely wants to eventually manage LFC. If he wins the league this season he needs to move on to a bigger challenge.

11 point lead over Celtic after their 2-2 draw away to Hibs yesterday and Rangers' 4-0 win vs Aberdeen today, albeit having played 2 games more.

Celtic's poor form continues (Last 10 - W2 D3 L5). Hopefully Rangers can take full advantage (goes to show it's not 'easy' to manage a top side too).

Former Liverpool captain Graham Souness lead a Rangers team (his first managerial job), who hadn't won the league for almost a decade to the title in 87.
His next job was at LFC.

Former Liverpool captain Steven G...

Could it happen?

Perhaps the plan by FSG and Billy Beane to buy a few more clubs might lead to Gerrard coming back to Liverpool via our 'sister' clubs.

[article]Former Rangers chairman Dave King has agreed the sale of his stake in the Ibrox club to supporters group Club 1872.

The sale, which will be completed within three years, will make the fans organisation the largest single shareholder in the club.[/article]
[article]

King announced last November that he was stepping down from his position as chairman, and was formally replaced by Douglas Park in March. However, the 20.68% of the Rangers shares he still holds is greater than any other shareholder.

He has now entered into agreement to sell the entire stake within three years, with the group having the opportunity to secure a lower price of 20p per share if it completes the purchase within 12 months.

“During regime change and throughout my chairmanship I have advocated for increased supporter influence at the shareholder level and I provided opportunities for Club 1872 to participate in every share issue that was undertaken. I did this partly to express my appreciation to those supporters and supporter groups who actively assisted me in securing regime change and partly to ensure that all supporters (whether shareholders or not) retain an influential voice in directing the affairs of their club. It is my sincere hope that “Never Again” will supporters become as disconnected and disempowered as they were at the time of my re-engagement with the club over 6 years ago.

“After completion of my service as chairman I took time to consider how I can create a final legacy by giving supporters – including future generations – substantial shareholder influence for the first time in the almost 150 years history of our Club. The time to launch a “Never Again” campaign is now.

“I made it repeatedly clear that I reinvested in the club somewhat reluctantly and only because without my support it was proving impossible for local Scottish supporters to martial sufficient financial resources to save Rangers from the impending doom that was unavoidable at that time. In addition I committed to investing further and doing whatever else it took (e.g. getting rid of Sports Direct/Mike Ashley) to see Rangers competing for Scottish titles and in Europe. That is firmly the case now.”

Club 1872 director Laura Fawkes said: “This is a huge moment for both Club 1872 and the Rangers support. We are very grateful to Dave King for his faith in Club 1872 and the Club 1872 Board and for his ongoing commitment to ensuring that the ownership structure of Rangers remains a very healthy mix of wealthy individuals and the wider supporter base.

“As Club 1872 Directors, we are very proud to present this opportunity to the Rangers support. We now need over 20,000 Rangers supporters to take up the baton, join Club 1872 and ensure that the events of 2012 can never happen again. It would be a seminal moment for both Rangers Football Club and the supporters if we could achieve the position of being the largest shareholder in Rangers in time for the 150th anniversary of the club in 2022.

“The rebuilding of the club, largely overseen by the Rangers Board under Dave King’s chairmanship, has been remarkable – from the position in 2012 to once again challenging for domestic titles and in European competition. Club 1872 can continue to assist with that process whilst ensuring that the wellbeing of the club remains at the centre of decision making in the longer term.”[/article]

I’m surprised they did call the Rangers Supporters group “Club 1690”.

Id imagine the chance to coach in the Champions League is the only thing that would appeal to Gerrard about potentially staying another season in Glasgow. Regardless of the league you qualify from its got to be a genuine attraction for a hobby manager.
