Fernando Torres says Liverpool's Champions League win over Arsenal was best night of his career

Apr 9 2008
EXCLUSIVE by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

FERNANDO TORRES today described how the magic of Anfield on a European night gave him the greatest moment of his career so far.

The Spanish striker was left enraptured by a magnificent Liverpool performance which saw them come back from losing positions twice to knock Arsenal out of the Champions League.

The Reds will now face Chelsea at the semi-final stage for the third time in just four years after defeating the Gunners 4-2 thanks to goals from Sami Hyypia, Torres, Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel.

Torres took his tally to the season to 29 with a magnificent second half strike which brought Anfield to its feet.

And the 24-year-old made no attempt to hide his delight at being a part of such a wonderful night in Liverpool’s illustrious European history.

He said: “It was special for all of us because of the work that we put in.

“To score four goals against a very good side is a good achievement for us and we are all very proud.

“It was the biggest night of my career and I came to Liverpool for nights like this.

“It is unbelievable – the high tempo of both teams, the fans, everything.

“It was a great game for Liverpool and for Arsenal but the most important thing for us is that we are now in the semi-finals.â€

Torres admitted that when Arsenal made it 2-2 to give them the lead on away goals with just over five minutes left on the clock he thought Liverpool were heading out of the competition.

“Yes, I thought it was finished. There were only a few minutes left but with the magic of Anfield the players were able to score two more goals.

“Liverpool is special. It is a special team, with special fans and a special city and today I am very happy to live in this city and to play for this club.â€

Liverpool’s 5-3 aggregate win sets up another tantalising clash with Chelsea in the next round and Torres is expecting that tie to be every bit as tough.

“We know that Chelsea are also a very good team but we will see if we can make it to the final.

“The English teams are the strongest at the moment so we know it will be difficult.

“We now have two games against Chelsea and our target is to finish in the top four in the Premiership and to win the Champions League.â€

I know we keep banging on about it, but it's ace having a striker who can score the sort of goal he got last night.

Is there any kind of goal he can't score?

Actually, has he scored a volley yet?

He thought we were beaten?

I want this loser sold in the summer.

We need winners at our clubs.

He hasn't scored a volley yet or bundled a ball over the line a-la-Kuyt.

But isn't it great having a striker that you just can't put down. Shackle him for a full match but one moment of genius wins us a game.

I think he did score a volley... was it against West Ham that Gerrard headed it back for Torres to lash home?

This is one of those threads where I can get away with randomly posting picture of Torres, right?
