Injuries​

Conor Bradley: Bradley had to be substituted after sustaining an injury during the first half of the 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur on December 20.

Wataru Endo: The midfielder has been out of action with an ankle injury since appearing in the 3-3 draw at Leeds United on December 6. Arne Slot said his absence will be "weeks" when providing an update on December 12.

Cody Gakpo: Gakpo is currently sidelined with a muscle problem suffered in the draw with Leeds. Slot on December 19: "He had a scan that looked promising so that means that we are not that worried anymore, as we were maybe one or two weeks ago. So that means he might come back a bit earlier than expected two weeks ago, but that's definitely not tomorrow and also not next week."

Joe Gomez: The No.2 picked up a muscle injury during the first half of the victory against Brighton & Hove Albion on December 13. Slot on December 19: "Joe is not in the squad as well for the weekend."

Alexander Isak: Isak sustained an injury in the act of scoring the opening goal in the 2-1 win at Tottenham on December 20. Broken leg. Out till April most likely.

Giovanni Leoni: The defender is amid a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the end of his debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

Bradley is one yellow card away from incurring a one-match suspension in the Champions League.

When you look at us when we were great for a sustained period, we went from Shankly to Paisley to Fagan to Dalglish and all the while Ronnie Moran was in the background filling up the almanac. Look at all the biggest success stories in our dirty capitalist world. When Steve Jobs started drinking carrot water to cure liver cancer they made sure Tim Cook got the message. Same with Microsoft - so why are football clubs now so different? We have to scour the globe for whoever is performing well at the minute without any knowledge of how the hiring club operates or how it got to where it is.

That's why, when we've got people doing coaching badges towards the end of their career (Milner) or a captain on the wane but has seen every decision made under Klopp (VVD) I get a bit pissed off when we start talking about Glasner or whoever else.

Dunno, just been thinking about it for the past few weeks. Man U essentially died when they didn't only lose Ferguson, they lost the whole team to entertain Moyes and his crew. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with Moyes but the players hated him from day one. I'm not sure Brian Kidd could have stepped up, but I'm sure if he knew two years out that was the plan he probably would have made a better job of it than a whole new coaching staff. I think it's what we should have done with Milner and what we should be doing with VVD.

You get the picture with what's happening at the academy now. Klopp brought it closer, Slot is pushing it away. The new guy might want to bring it closer again, at which point we've lost years worth of talent. There should be a common ethos that transcends the figurehead at the top.

All just mind games because it's not and won't happen - but anyone else got any thoughts?

How quickly do you think we can transform this team, given our massive outlay in the Summer?

We rarely spend big in January, availability is usually thin on the ground then anyway, but the stories around Semenyo won't go away, so I think it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he could join in January.

I think we need him, I think it's the one thing missing from our attack, someone with that kind of pace, strength and directness, we've lost that with Mane and then Diaz. Regardless of our glaring holes elsewhere, I don't think it's an opportunity we can pass up.

That said, I don't think we can wait until the Summer to add a centre half. Gomez and Leoni are both crocked and that leaves us an inevitable Konate injury away from disaster.

I think it's essential that we add a CB sooner rather than later, though I guess a lot will hinge on how quickly Gomez and Leoni return, and as much as we need a DM, I can see the club holding off until the Summer on that one.

Despite our huge summer spend, we really could do with a big window, which could really propel us in the league and help us get a leg up for next season. It's pie in the sky probably, but if we signed Semenyo, a commanding midfielder and a centre back in January, it really would elevate us. I know this should have happened in the Summer, but I think we'll be thankful for the big summer spend further down the line, even if it didn't make logical sense at the time.
