Hillsborough families want Kenny Dalglish knighthood

A minute's silence was held at 1506 BST, the exact time the game was abandoned 22 years ago

Relatives of Liverpool fans who died in the Hillsborough disaster have called for Kenny Dalglish to be knighted.

Former Lord Mayor of Liverpool Steve Rotherham MP told fans at an Anfield memorial service that the families have asked him to table an Early Day Motion.

The motion would request the Queen to knight the Liverpool manager.

Dalglish was manager at the time of the disaster when 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at an FA Cup semi-final on 15 April 1989.

Dalglish helped ensure the club was represented at all of the fans' funerals and attended many of them in person.

The former Scotland player became Liverpool boss for the second time in January and this year's memorial service was the first he had attended the memorial service as Liverpool boss since 1990.

Mr Rotherham said the motion was "so that on all our behalf the King of the Kop can become Sir Kenny".

Justice call
The announcement was met with cheers and a standing ovation from the Liverpool faithful and chants of "Kenny".

Ten thousand people attended a memorial service at Anfield to mark the Hillsborough disaster.

Ninety-five Liverpool fans were crushed to death during the team's tie with Nottingham Forest at the stadium in Sheffield.

The disaster's 96th victim was fan Tony Bland, who died in hospital on 3 March 1993, after the Law Lords ruled that artificial food and hydration could be stopped by medical staff at the Airedale Hospital, Yorkshire.

A minute's silence was held at 1506 BST, the exact time the game was abandoned 22 years ago.

'Heroic fans'
Before the service Dalglish said: "It's a sad day and it's a day etched in the minds of everyone connected with the club."

Mr Rotherham said the families of the 96 were a step closer to justice since the establishment of an independent panel in 2009 to examine previously unseen documents relating to Hillsborough.

He added: "To those that attack Liverpool supporters - I will never tire of reminding them that the fans were the real heroes in 1989, not the villains."

The crowd later chanted the name of former manager Rafael Benitez when Margaret Aspinall, chairman of the Hillsborough Family Support Group which organised the event, thanked him for his continued support.

Earlier writer Jimmy McGovern earned a standing ovation from the packed Kop when he delivered a reading called "To the Families" which ended: "For 22 years you have watched judges putting the niceties of law above justice itself, and still you have battled on."

Mrs Aspinall, whose 18-year-old son was attending his first away match when he was caught in the crush, said she was "annoyed" by talk of bringing back terraces.

"We will never ever want standing ever again," she added.

Current Liverpool squad members attended the service along with former players such as Ian Rush.

Regardless of what he's done outside football he's the top man in Scottish football, check wikipedia.
He has the most caps and scored the most goals for Scotland. He's arguable the best Scottish player that has ever lived.
It's quite strange how he hasn't been knighted. But why does a Scotsman want to be knighted?
I didn't get why Sean Connery accepted the knighthood considering that he's a Scottish nationalist.

Why wouldn't a scottish person get knighted? The Queen isn't just the Queen of England, shes the Queen of Great Britain, so in effect the Queen of Scotland.

Did you read what I wrote or did you just guess it?
Have you missed the part about Connery being a nationalist?
I know that Scotland is part of Great Britain, you knob.
I'm just wondering how Scottish people with their "Braveheart" want something from the Queen and at the same time "freedom" or a separate state.

I've seen some crazy shit on the internet but one of our own fans getting our manager confused with James Bond is perhaps of the most surprising.

I suppose it's a bit like the way Alan Hansen will never be made a Duke because Billy Connolly plays the banjo.

I'm sure there's another scottish manager who's a knight of the realm

Hmm

OK, let me try again.

My perception of Scottish people are that they're very proud and that they hate everything that has anything to do with England.
The queen, IMO, is the quintessential image of England.

I'm guessing that a majority of Scottish people would like Scotland to become an independent state. In that case I guess the first thing that's abolished is the monarchy. That is usually what happens.

So that's why I don't "get" why Mr Connery accepted the knighthood.

If I was a nationalist/separatist from a country that was colonized and oppressed for centuries by another country, and they offered me a knighthood, I'd tell them to shove it.

The genius of our disgusting aristocratic system is that it makes the majority feel inclusive by passing the odd pointless and non hereditary title to heros of the common man, to put us off the scent. Lennon had it right. Not as right as the French, mind

Kenny is already a King. A knighthood is a demotion.

Nevertheless, its scandalous that he has received recognition for his footballing exploits alone.

You just don't get it do you. Even if Scotland became a seperate state, the Queen would still be there Queen, we have the same royal family, we have since the 17th century, before the union.

And Scotland was never oppressed, they agreed to the union you pleb. And before you claim it, no they were not coerced.

Quite. In fact the Union followed our acceptance of the Scottish King of the time as our King too.

Of course there are times when a Scottish King is exactly what's required. 8)

I'd lol if Scotland gained any form of economical/monarchical independence.

The place would implode.

I think that's being fairly harsh on Scotland. The reason we're being told we're all in this together and we're printing money that doesn't exist isn't only down to the failure of the welfare state but also the massive fraud committed in The City.

I think what I'm trying to say is, the whole western world is fucked, it's just about degrees.

oh so he wouldn't take a knighthood either

Thankyou for contacting me about the Early Day Motion 1733 and calls for a knighthood for Kenny Dalglish.

I do not sign Early Day Motion, as they have no legislative effect, almost always have no influence whatsoever and cost the taxpayers over £500,000 per year on average. Indeed, I have tabled a motion calling for their reform of abolition. However, I shall briefly outline my views on the subject.

Even as a lifelong Manchester United fan, I must admit that kenny Dalglish is an all time great footballer and has had tremendous success as a manager. Moreover, he has inspired huge numbers of people and undertaken a great deal of charity work. I know that he is held in the highest regard within but also well beyong the footballing world.

The honours system recognises people of outstanding merit and those who have committed themelves to service the nation. It has been in existence for centuries, but it was a closed system for many years. Only since 1993 has everybody been free to nominate.

To further your calls for a knighthood, I would reccomend nominating Kenny youself. To get started, you will need a copy of the nominations form and the guidance notes. These are available for download from DirectGov,gov,uk or from the Cabinet Office.I hope this information is of assistance.

Yours Sincerely,
Graham Evans MP.

NIcked that off Rawk.

My MP already replied saying she wouldnt sign these motions as she was a Whip.

I might try and nominate him before I leave, if he does get it I'll feel a little happier thinking I helped a little.

I'm actually a bit disappointed that this campaign hasnt gained more steam around the country; many are quick to dismiss honours as being jobs for the boys and influential people glad-handing each other. They're also quick to point out how Ginsoak doesnt deserve his and how he only got it because of Alistair Campbell's influence and how Ginsoak contributed money to Labour.

All that is true, but when an opportunity comes along to at least try to actually get it for someone FAR more deserving we still scoff.

Is it stupid contacting my MP asking for help considering I'm not a citizen and she isnt really my MP?

Yes.

Do I feel stupid?

Not in the slightest.

Avvy, as long as you're lawfully resident in her constituency I don't think it matters a light what passport you carry, so I don't think you were being stupid by approaching her. That said, knowing the MP in question I'm not sure I'd have bothered. It doesn't surprise me that she's a Whip, as she's a frighteningly Dalek-like party loyalist clone.

Because I come from a country where those titles are meaningless, and where they're literally bought and sold by the Government and members of the royalty, and considering practically every state in my country has a royal family that's a lot of dough flying around.

I'd like to think there were at least some instances where it was deserved, because I will certainly never see it in my lifetime.
