Don't know mate, he definitely looked promising though in the game he played, hopefully he'll get a reserve game under his belt and then try and get back in. He can't be worse than Degen defensively, surely?

I need a few days to get over the fucking eyesore of a performance from last night and scrape my enthusiams off the floor after it jumped off a 10 story building last night, after that I will think about us playing Bolton Fucking Wanderers.

*sobs*

I'd play:

Reina
Degen Carra Gherkin Aurelio
Maxi Gerrard Mascherano Riera
Aquilani
Kuyt

He'll play:

Reina
Carra Skrtel Gherkin Insua
Mascherano Lucas
Degen Gerrard Aurelio
Kuyt

Im assuming that hes still injured and that the injury was worse than they first thought. A pity because he looked really good.

Reina

Degen
Carra
Zorba
Aurelio

Masher

Maxi
Gerrard
Purple
Riera

Kuyt

That is the team he should play. He won't because he's gone mental and is a stubborn twat, so we will probably have TIC and The Sewer disgracing the shirt again

I think most would like to see a 4-3-3 with Carra back in the middle, but it doesn't seem as though Rafa is going to deviate from his preferred systems (and players), so there is no point hoping.

Cant we just forfeit? Or just play the kids. Anything but watching that shite again.
I remember when our kids beat a fullstrength Spurs side in the Carling in Rafa's first season. Now our first string (albeit with some injuries) can't score against Wolves in the league.

When's Glenjo fit again?

I suspect he'll stick with the same back four that started on Tuesday night anyway.

I'd go 442 for this one.

Reina

Degen - Carra - Zorba - Aurelio

Gerrard - Mascher - Aquilani - Riera

Wash - Kuyt

Stevie might not be happy playing out on the right, but fuck it, he doesn't look happy anyway. At least this way we should get a few good crosses in, and perhaps have at least two players in the area to get on the end of them.

Reina
Insua
Agger
Krygiakos
Degen

Mascherano
Aquilani
Gerrard

Maxi
Kuyt
Riera

FTW

Rafa's team

Reina
Insua
Skrtel

Glen Jo is apperantly out more than 6 weeks... I'd play Kelly
Kelly is only back in training and hasnt played since the Lyon gate at Anfield. I doubt very much he'll play

I'm feeling rather confident that both Riera and Maxi will start. The 90 minutes to Maxi against Wolves seemed like a rather clear telling that Rafa wants him to regain his match-fitness and do so quickly.

Aquilani will surely start as well.

Agger if fit.

Here's the team I reckon/hope;

.................................Reina................................

Carra..............Kyrgiakos...Agger...............Insua

..............................Masher................................

....................Gerrard.........Aqui..........................

Maxi......................Kuyt..............................Riera

Do you honestly think he will drop Lucas?
Yes.

Will be watching from the Anfield Road end. First time over for league match in ten years so fingers crossed it'll be a positive result.

I'll surely keep my fingers firmly crossed for you and the team mate!

Rafa's team

Reina
Insua
Skrtel
Krygiakos
Carragher

Lucas
Mascherano

Gerrard
Kuyt
Aurelio

Swop Aurelio for Riera, and I think that's it.

He might Ken, who knows.

Obviously Gerrard will play, ditto Mascherano. For Aquilani to then play, Lucas would have to be dropped, and I'd be surprised if he did that.

I was enquiring as to the possible logic behind such a decision as opposed to the likelihood of it coming to pass.

I imagine Rafa thinking he could accommodate a more attacking type in last years team, however in the here and now with the team struggling for confidence, he seems loathe to deviate from his two holding midfielders leaving room for only one attacking midfielder. If that's the case, there can only be one winner really between Aquilani and Gerrard (despite Robin's protestations).

I know Aquilani is still new to the league and no doubt is still a way off his best after such a long time out, but he needs games at this point. He may not be the same type of player as Alonso but he is still Alonso's replacement and the more he's kept out of the side, the more questions are going to be asked.

Well, I don't really see the point in putting up 'preferred teams', when it's never likely to come to pass.

Similarly, I prefer to discuss why Rafa chooses to do something, as opposed to complaining about it. Not saying you do, obviously.

There's an easy excuse and scapegoat out there for anyone with ever decision Rafa makes. I just find it pointless, lazy, and laregly missing the point.

Anyway, back to Aquilani. I don't think Rafa trusts him. For various reasons really. How will he gain that trust/improve/gel with other players/become a Premier League player? By playing regularly of course. Right now, I don't think Rafa's prepared to give him that freedom. We're simply not equipped to carry someone.

Actually carry someone's not fair, and not really the term I was after. But I think (hope) you get my point.

I am confused by the Aquilani conundrum. As fans we just knew that our new £20m man was going to turn the season around.

Yet for whatever reason, Rafa seems loathed to trust him more than Lucas. Play Aqua behind Torres and Stevie in CM, simples. Or not as it seems. The Lucas/Masher combo against the likes of Wolves is beyond a joke. Zero creativity. Yet when I see Lucas's obligatory Youtube collection he looks quite menacing. WTF is happening?

Well, as you gathered from my clarification, my question was prompting such a discussion rather than another moan-fest.

I don't think Rafa trusts him to play in the midfield two either right now, which is why I'm a little disappointed that he's not tried a midfield three that might afford Aquilani a little more protection and Rafa a little more confidence.

You're right, the team can ill afford a liability in an important position but many would argue - probably quite successfully - that we've suffered from that a fair bit this season anyways.

Most of all I want to understand whether Aquilani is viewed by Rafa as someone who can play week in, week out. The price tag and the circumstances in which he arrived all suggest that he should be, but it'd be nice to get a few more reassuring signs.
