So, do you guys think Carra walks right back into the starting XI? Given we have now kept a clean sheet for the last game and a half since he went off. And we were leaking goals with him in.

Certainly hope so.

How come? Do you feel comfortable about us at the back with him in the team nowadays?

Meant to put 'not' instead of 'so'.

Time for Carra to sit it out.

Whilst West Brom were shite and offered very little going forward, our defensive line and shape looked much better with Carra not in the side.

I thought we looked unorganised at the back from set pieces. That said we held a better line.

Smeone needs to step up & start marshalling the defence if we can play without Carra regularly.

We didn't look any less organised then when carra is there

Why though? Carra's supposedly been marshalling the defence in the last few years and we've still been all over the shop.

The main defensive work is done Monday-Friday on the training pitch then it's just about putting it into practice on match day.

2010/11 PL Carragher Starts: P28 Clean Sheets 10 (28%), Goals Against 32 (1.1 per game), Points Per Game 1.5

2010/11 PL No Carragher Start: P10 Clean Sheets 4 (40%), Goals Against 12 (1.2 per game), Points Per Game 1.6

It's weird a couple of months ago I wanted him out due to a couple of mistakes. Now I'm actually not so sure.

As I see it, it's between Skrtel and Carra. Like I said before Agger +1.
If we had anyone better than Carra, I'd definitely support dropping him.

I'm not so sure about Skrtel and Coates is still a bit suspect. He did OK against Stoke, despite the goal he basically gifted them.

Coates gifted them a chance

They still had a lot to do to score it

Hence "basically".
He gifted them a chance and they scored. So basically he gifted them a goal.

He did gift them a chance, but when Walters cross came in, there were Jones, Carragher, Kelly and Reina waiting for it. And Jones still managed to score.

Agree with Fabio here. He didn't give away a goal but rather lost the ball in a dangerous position that lead to a goal.

I personally don't agree with holding that mistake against coates is all

I've seen players do a lot worse and get little said against them

I don't get why you have to sugar-coat it / over analyse it.

He fucked up they scored, in the end we won.

I don't hold it against him it depends on the fuck up.

I'm not over analyzing it, you've made it too simplistic.

He did fuck up. But a ball still had to get crossed in of reasonable quality. A header with precision.

Yes it's a fuck up, but not a bad one.

Carra seems to be making bad calls/ challenges with more regularity than we should expect from a player of his pedigree. That tackle against Stoke was one of a number of really silly tackles I've seen Carra put in, in the past year. That one on Nani was the most memorable- what was a terrific win for us that day could have been compromised by what was a silly lunge you expect from a daft boy- and he's had a few more wtf moments since. I love Carra, but he is coming near to the stage where we need to be bedding in his successors. He's been a fantastic player for us, and no doubt has many more games to play, but I don't think he should necessarily be playing week-in, week-out anymore.

No Carra shouldn't walk straight back into the side.

We've got a decent squad which gives us a few options for most positions, for my money only the likes of Pepe and Suarez (maybe to a lesser extent Stevie and Enrique as well) should come back into the starting 11 as soon as they're fit.

For me Gerrard shouldn't walk back in

And I don't care about what flack I get for that

I doubt you'll get much flak for saying that Fabs. The simple fact of the matter is is that we can't rely on him anymore.

I've been unimpressed since his return And I know it's down to match fitness

But

Why cultivate a midfield with a 30 odd year old injury prone player at it's hub? we should aim to abuse the fact we have good young players who can play well together

The time for nostalgia has surely passed?

Sums it up well. I think Carra knows he's lost it hence the rash tackles and defending is creeping more and more into his game.

Agger and Skrtel are a solid pairing and should get a run of games together.

Have I missed something?

When did criticizing Carra become the latest fashion on this forum?

Last time I even hinted about Carra getting dropped people went bonkers.

We've been here before, it's one thing saying that he's starting to show a bit of wear and tear, it's another banging for years about how shit he is.

Precisely!!

Without wanting to address this to anyone in particular, since when does putting your best player straight into the starting lineup qualify as nostalgia?
