Where did it go wrong for him?

At Arsenal he was considered one of the most promising / talented players in the world and was already a leader for his team.

Moved to Barca and didn't quite work out as both parties had planned for reasons I still don't quite understand.

Now he's on the fringes at Chelsea who aren't exactly brilliant in midfield at the moment.

A case of being in the place at the wrong time or is there more to it?

He's struggled at Chelsea because he was signed to be a holding midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 and he was shit at defending. I presume the idea was for Matic to dominate and Fabregas to playmake from deep, but it didn't work out because both of their individual form nose-dived along with the rest of the squad.

It seemed a strange signing from Mourinho at the time, who often favours physical presence above all else in the middle of the park. Essien, Ballack, Lampard, Makelele, Muntari, Thiago Motta, Cambiasso, Sami Khedira and even Xabi Alonso can dominate the middle of the park in a physical sense. In his teams the playmakers are usually shunted out wide - Ozil, Sneijder and Joe Cole, etc. The one exception was Modric, but he could afford to do that in Spain, such was the quality of the player and the shitness of the opposition. We haven't seen that replicated in the Premier League, so in that sense Fabregas was a move a way from his tired and tested methods and it raises questions whether Mourinho ever wanted him.

Anyway, as soon as it became apparant Fabregas couldn't hold a midfield, even with the support of Matic, the experiment appeared to quickly be considered a mistake and he's been sidelined since.

He's suffering from not being able to dominate either side of the pitch in the Premier League. His fortunes don't seem to be looking up under Conte either, although the 2 goals scored the other day might put him back in contention.

Wasnt he very good in the first 6 months of his first season at Chelsea? He faded badly and hasnt recovered.

The same thing that goes wrong with so many players, they're at a team that's built around them, to get the best out of them, then when they move to a team that doesn't provide them such luxury, they struggle to adapt.

Yes, he was scoring goals and got a shedload of assists. But there was always a feeling that he started seasons well, but then faded horribly after Xmas. Happened at Arsenal, Barcelona and also Chelsea.

He can't tackle and he can't run. And he's getting slower. So unless you construct the side around him, give him runners, reduce his defensive responsibilities to zero and play him higher up the pitch, you will never get the best out of him.

He's a super passer, and very skilful. But physically he's not very robust.
