Fowler, McManaman and Jones to coach at LFC

Awesome news. That's rightback, striker and winger sorted out for the next gen then.

Interesting appointments, all of them. I thought Rob Jones was supposed not to be the sharpest crayon in the box, but he was (briefly) as good a fullback as I've seen in the last 20 years, so if he's got a knack for coaching that should certainly help us, and I've always thought Robbie was cannier than he let on. The surprise for me is the appointment of McManaman, after (a) the way he left the club as a player and (b) the less than helpful influence he seemed to be on Robbie, for LFC and for England. However, there's no question he's bright enough, so here's hoping.

I know it's not exactly the same thing, but his nursery business did well didn't it? I'd imagine him giving something to the community to aid youngster development might have also stood him in good stead. He'd done his badges apparently anyway.

I hope McManaman gives Sterling a bit of time, the lad hasn't advanced one iota in a year.

It's sending him on the England squad that's done it, positive influences of Young and Walcott to aspire to..

McManaman can't be any worse, how long until Owen and Redknapp join the cause?

This sounds like a collaborative plan to turn Aspas into a Footballer.

It's going to be like an episode of Faking It.

No, but that doesn't render him useless at a coach. He should have an important capacity at the club, IMO. He's very insightful on many issues, and his footie knowledge will be highly valuable to our younger players.

[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fc-greats-robbie-fowler-6123557]Brendan Rodgers has enlisted the help of three Liverpool FC greats to help nurture the club’s next generation of talent.

Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones have been snapped up on a part-time basis to work with the Reds’ under-21s and under-18s squads at the Kirkby Academy.

Rodgers is keen to tap into the knowledge and experience of former Kop favourites and believes Liverpool’s youngsters will benefit greatly from being mentored by the trio.

Fowler, McManaman and Jones are assisting head coaches Alex Inglethorpe and Neil Critchley by providing specialist sessions in their particular area of expertise.

“It’s great to have Robbie, Steve and Rob on board,” Rodgers told the ECHO.

“I said at the end of last season that I wanted to get more former players involved and over the off-season I spoke to a number of them about a possible role here.

“For me it’s so important to have players like that around.

“These are players who the young guys look up to.

“The three of them have come in recently and I know they have thoroughly enjoyed having that involvement of working with the kids.

“We’re starting with the older Academy players as they are ones they can really affect at this moment.

“It’s both coaching and mentoring, and Alex Inglethorpe is managing that process.

“At the moment it’s about individual work with the players.

“Steve McManaman is working with the wingers and attacking players, Rob Jones is doing some work with the full-backs and defenders, and Robbie Fowler is obviously working with the strikers.

“They are giving them little pointers and passing on experiences from their own careers to help the youngsters. What we are doing is providing an opportunity for the former players.

“Then further down the line we will see what their interests are in that field.

“The young players coming through are picking up vital bits of information. I’m pleased that it’s working well.”

Rodgers has always embraced Liverpool’s illustrious past since his arrival at Anfield 16 months ago.

Toxteth-born Fowler, Kirkdale-born McManaman and lifelong Red Jones were selected not only because of what they achieved during their playing days but also because they know exactly what it means to represent the Reds.

“Sometimes managers feel the need to distance themselves from players like that but I love what this institution is all about at Liverpool,” Rodgers added.

“It’s important to retain that connection with the history of the club. I want to protect that great history to ensure these players get the opportunity to be involved at a club they love.

“We lost a true great in Jamie Carragher this summer and you need people around who love the club dearly.

“If you look throughout the club now, we have lots of staff from this area. We have Mike Marsh on the staff with the first team – a local boy who came through and played for the first team.

“Frank McParland, our Academy director, knows the area inside out and guys like that are very important to me in understanding the culture of Liverpool.

“Getting the likes of Robbie, Steve and Rob involved is all part of that. They offer wisdom, they have played at the top level and they also understand what playing for Liverpool Football Club is all about.”

Jones, whose 12-year-old son Declan is on the books at the Kirkby Academy, didn’t need a second invitation after Rodgers sought his services.

“When Brendan called me to ask if I would be interested, I jumped at the chance to get involved,” he said.

“I really want to see the club do well and I’m happy to help the Academy youngsters in any way I can.

“There is some great talent coming through and Brendan has shown he’s very willing to put his faith in youth. Hopefully we’ll see more of the young players taking that step up to Melwood.”[/article]

I just saw this - What fucking ace news! Having all of them back at the club is great but I'm particularly pleased about Robbie 'God' Fowler. My favourite LFC player of all time.

I can't see Fowler being a good coach at all but hopefully I'm wrong.

"Alright, now take your credit card out and sort out the powder like this...into lines you see? Also be careful not to drop the mirror when you take a snort, you wouldn't want seven years bad luck now would you?"

I think it's less coaching and more mentoring on their parts, while offering pointers which can only come from playing at the highest level.

Well I know why you'd say that. I have read a few autobiographies (including his own) where his commitment to training and learning all he can has been highlighted frequently. Surprising perhaps - Given his cheeky lad image.

I think it's zero pressure coaching. But all coaching is also mentoring if it's good. Fowler's certainly doing his badges and is keen on a career as a coach or manager so this is a nice way for him to test himself whilst helping the kids (and as he said about Rushie, he learnt more about attacking play from him in training than from any formal coach).

Yup, heard how serious Fowler is about his badges. Haven't heard about Macca and Jones taking up coaching though.

Well last I heard Jones had quit football altogether and was helping his wife run a bunch of children nurseries - There is no denying though the guy was a fantastically gifted right back and could offer a lot. Mcmanaman is an articulate guy and is my tip to be 'The Secret Footballer' :tpoto:

Dave Kitson is 100% the secret footballer. But McManaman seems to have suddenly warmed to the red side of the city in recent years, so if he can help Ibe and Co, all to the good. Jones has taken me by surprise, he's not had any interest for ages as far as I can tell, but it's nice to see him back sentimentally speaking.

Dave Kitson??? Really???? Makes complete sense - Macca I owe you a dram of the finest scotch for this knowledge (Or a tipple of your choice of course) 🙂

Damn, I thought I had unearthed this great knowledge this morning but looks like Macca got there first. I haven't read the columns but was told who it was a while ago.

My fav ever player but he often talked about not being to advise others on things and that he often didn't think just did

People change though. IMO Robbie always had more between his ears than his image sometimes suggested - maybe now he feels better able to share some of it.

Talking of ex-players, it's intriguing that Rushie, of all people, has become the eminence grise of the club. They haven't given him any title, apart from an informal 'ambassador' one, but even that is usually used for Standard Chartered projects, but he's been on FSG's shadowy 'committee of advisors' for yonks. I'm not knocking him, it's just quite a surprise. He'll be pictured with a white cat on his lap soon, pressing a button as Aspas gets dropped through a hole into a shark-infested underground pool.

Yep, Kitson, Danny Murphy and Nicky Shorey are the three leading candidates from the site anyway.

The video of Antonio Valencia blocking Kitson's attempted clearance is pretty damning though.

Liverpool legend John Barnes says he would jump at the chance to return to the club in a coaching capacity, should Brendan Rodgers ever require his services.

The Reds added former favourites Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones to their coaching structure last week, while Kenny Dalglish returned as a non-executive director.

And the 49-year-old Barnes, who spent 10 years at Anfield as a player and has since managed Celtic and Tranmere Rovers, believes his ties to the club could be beneficial.

“I would most definitely take the job. I played for Liverpool and working there would be a great way for me to show my appreciation to the club,” Barnes told Goal.

“It is the modern truth that we now lack legends that can identify with the club. I feel that being part of the system would benefit the club a lot since I understand the culture.

“The reality is that players come and go, but the club remains and that is why it is important to always protect the brand of the club.”

Liverpool currently sit second place in the Premier League table after an excellent start to the 2013-14 campaign, though Barnes believes Champions League qualification is the best they can hope for.

“I am not sure about them winning the league, since it has just begun,” he added. “I doubt they will win it, but maybe they can finish in the top five.”

Get him in!!!

Yep getting Digger back would be aces! I still remember the day we signed him from Watford for £900,000 - Beardo came at the same time for a then record transfer fee. Fuck me that was a good summer! 🙂
