Gary Neville appointed to England coaching staff on four year contract

The former England defender Gary Neville has been appointed as a coach on Roy Hodgson's England staff. Neville, who holds Uefa A and B coaching licences, has signed a four year contract with The FA.

"Roy asking me to be a part of his staff and to work with the national team is not only an honour but a very special moment for me," said Neville. "I had absolutely no hesitation in accepting this role and I am relishing the opportunity to work alongside Roy and the team at the Euros and through to the next two tournaments."

During a successful playing career he made 85 England appearances, while winning every domestic honour with Manchester United, and the Uefa Champions League. He represented England at Euro 96, Euro 2000, Euro 2004, World Cup 98 and World Cup 2006. After retiring in 2010-11, he has been widely acclaimed for his football analysis during his first season working for Sky Sports. Neville will join the coach Ray Lewington and the goalkeeping coaches Ray Clemence and Dave Watson in Hodgson's coaching staff at the European Championship.

"Gary has achieved so much in the game as a player with Manchester United and England," said Hodgson. "He has obtained Uefa coaching qualifications and will be tremendously respected by the players because of his vast experience as a player.

"At my first meeting with The FA, I explained that Gary was someone I wanted as part of my staff. I think it is very important we have a younger coach who knows the dressing room and is very experienced at international level. That he has represented England as a player at five major finals tournaments will make him an invaluable member of staff."

Why would an Irishman be happy for Gary Neville being appointed as coach of England?

Good appointment. He seems to know what hes talking about. Ought to command respect given what hes achieved....

But if this means his cunt mong faced old man steptoe lookin brother getting any where near the England set up i'll have a fucking eppy.

I like the idea of someone who is widely disliked by players he didn't play alongside trying to tell lots of players he played against what to do.

Its a recipe for disaster, particularly given how braindead half of the squad is.

LOL. I knew there is a catch.

Hate him though I do, this is a very good appointment by Hodgson.

It could be yes. Neville does seem to know his stuff. Whether he is a good coach, or whether he agrees with Woy's 'methods' (bearing in mind who he would have learned his own methods from!) remains to be seen.

One potential problem though, if he is brought in because he knows the players and is respected by the players then how does that fit in with his punditry on Sky? He could quite easily be having to sit there slagging off a player on the Saturday then meeting up with them with England on the Monday.

On the plus side he'll be telling Woy about how much Ferdinandralone hates Terry and he may well get dropped. Anything that pisses EBJT off is a silver lining.

The England coaching set up is not looking very Liverpool-friendly so far is it?

Who next? Mark Bright and Joe Royle?

With a bit of luck it'll mean our players get fewer international calls, so it's all good.

As for EBJT, I wouldn't be surprised if Woy has already decided to drop him. It would make sense playing-wise but would also look to some like a brave decision. Win-win for Woy-Woy.

I think he will leave Terry out. Hodgson likes his teams to have a great bond and togetherness and he might see Terry as a bad apple.
