I was (am.. not sure anymore) a massive fan of Gomez as thought for a long time he could develop into one of the best around or an English Varane.

He's had some very good spells for us but unfortunately injury has disrupted his development and he now finds himself behind Matip and possibly Konate too who surely must have received some guarantees of playing time.

What do people think the future holds for Gomez?

We really can't afford to lose him from a homegrown perspective but will he be happy playing second fiddle in the long-term?

I see his future here, every top club needs 4 top CB's and he's 1 of those 4....

He's still only 24, 5-6 years younger than our current starting 2.....it makes sense he and Konate (if progressed well) would be our first choice to suceed Matip and Virgil.

Does he get back into the team this season if Matip/Virg stay fit? Honestly I don't know, I'd say probably not given Klopp's hesitancy to rotate but he knows how important he is to the side.

Matip will breakdown, as he usually does, and he will be first off the bench to replace him. He'll then have a chance to prove himself and stake a claim alongside Virg again. Whether he takes it or not remains to be seen.

I think he'll surely start in the Carabao cup (3rd round) with Konate. And potentially one of them, if not both, will start in the CL rotation weeks (wouldn't want to push Virg/Matip to 2 games a week right now). Obviously this will probably be dependent on the group we're in (how strong), and on the PL team we're playing that week (home/away?).

Anyways, I still think he's got the potential to be one of the best in the league, but this year feels like it might be a pivotal year for him to prove his ability to stay fit, otherwise I don't see him getting back in past Matip/Konate.

We also know that Gomez can provide cover at FB if needed, and as Ibro says, a fit Matip is only ever a fleeting thing. One of our problems has been having to play kids at CB in the cups like Sepp VDB, who inevitably fucks up, so it might help us progress in other competitions having 4 senior CBs, all of whom inspire confidence.

Gomez and konate are the future. Matip will get injured, and one of them will step up. It's all about impressing

It will be up to Gomez to determine his future. I'm happy to see genuine competition for the starting berths, just as I'm happy to see Jota pushing Bobby.

The arrival of Konate does obviously cause a problem for Gomez.

Although he was probably number 3 behind Van Dijk and Matip before, it was always likely that Matip would be injured frequently and he only really had Lovren as competition to step in. Now he has an expensive player who is potentially good to compete with.

I'm sure it would all work out in the end somehow but you can see how Gomez might get frustrated in the meantime.

Was that talk of him wanting to be in London real or not?
I would believe so but surely only Chelsea play at the high level for him, and he wouldn't be a starter there. It doesnt make much sense right now.

What kinda bid would make us accept, anyway? 40mil?

Arsenal paid £50m for a defender with just one Premier League season experience and two England caps. Joe had three EPL seasons in a team competing for, and winning, the title before missing last season to injury, played in three seasons of European football including playing in the Final (which you may remember we won!) and has 11 caps.

Why would he go for less?

More to the point what on earth would make us consider selling!

Sorry but Gomez is at a minimum at least 65M, he has everything in his game and at times playing alongside VVD has even been better than him. He will eventually take over - Matip will retire first form our defenders and then it will be Joe's time. It will happen for him, but he needs to understand his physical limitations in terms of his injury record. Hopefully he will sort himself out, and get those chances.

The question is will Gomez stay and fight for his place or decide the time has come to move on? He signed a new 5 yr contract (£75k p.w.) for the 2019/20 season (expiry 23/24) so there is no urgency to do anything, on the club's side.

He had this to say (I'm guessing tongue in cheek when assessing his competition ex. Konate) :

“That’s part and parcel of being at a top club, I think,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.
“That’s what this club deserves and that’s what we all thrive off: competition is good and it’s healthy. But we can all learn off one another, I think each of us is different and we’ve got top quality. “Obviously the likes of Rhys and Nat and Ben and so on, all top players, and it’ll be good this season. Now it’s just to learn from each other and keep pushing each other, day in and day out.”
On Konate specifically, Gomez continued: “Ibou’s top. He’s a great player and has adapted straight away to our style of play. Obviously it can be high-intensity sometimes but he’s got all the attributes to thrive I think.”

However it's clear to see the direction Klopp is moving in (from the Offal) :

Gomez looks to have improved his long-range passing during his time on the sidelines, with Klopp describing it as a “nice little asset.” “Having the centre-halves back, playing football, you can see Joey with new long balls from left to right to left, a nice little asset,” he told the club’s official website. “It’s good, we can switch the game quicker maybe.”

While Phillips and Williams can execute long-range passes at times, they are not able to do so with the consistency of Liverpool‘s established senior centre-backs.
That made the Reds more predictable in their absence, with opponents able to read their play more quickly and counter the threat of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah out wide. If Liverpool are able to “switch the game quicker,” as Klopp details, they can spot gaps in the opposition’s defence by springing accurate balls out to the likes of Mane, Salah, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It is an asset that Ibrahima Konate possesses, too, with the Frenchman also blessed with the recovery pace that allows him, Gomez, Van Dijk and Matip to operate more comfortably in the high line Klopp desires.

I can't see him wanting to move at this time, not after the club's support, however if this season doesn't go well for him, playing time-wise, I'd expect he'd re-evaluate for next season.

It is a conundrum because Gomez is good enough to be a starter now, but he is still young and surely Matip has 1 more season max left in him and then Gomez will become a mainstay for us again. I can understand why he'd want to start more, especially with the world cup 18 months away.

In theory out CB partnerships should look like this over time

VVD - Matip
VVD - Gomez (Matip leaves)
Konate - Gomez (when VVD leaves)

Patience from Konate and Gomez will be a must. But surely they will partner each other in a host of cup and CL games.

It's a long season, he'll get his games for sure. Also think he'll be used to cover Trent a fair amount as well.

Don't get me wrong I'm a big Gomez fan, his recovery pace has been such an asset in the past, but it's not coincidence just how much more comfortable Trent looks playing alongside Matip as opposed to Gomez.

I'm bemused by this thread .... since Virgil joined he has been the only constant in the CB pairing (last season aside); why people are assuming it will be VIrgil & Matip forever now, or even that Matip is preferred over Gomez, baffles me. It will be Virgil plus one of the Matip, Gomez or Konate, they'll all get games

He may even have the luxury of restign VIrgil on occasion now

Matip, when fit, is one of the best defenders in the PL. So as long as he manages to stay fit he'll be playing next to Van Dijk.

And yet, there were significant runs of games when Matip was fit in the last few years and Klopp preferred to play Gomez alongside Van Dijk

Gomez was doing well, but when Van Dijk joined Matip was the preferred partner until he got injured.
