We have a player with great talent but possible mental weakness.
Now do we try and coax out the player, investing minutes on the pitch in the hope he'll come good? Or is this too dangerous in what could be a crucial season next year

Do we loan him out to see if he can capture some form and learn when to release a killer ball? Or is that a waste of the talent he has?

Plonk him in the reserves so he can settle without the irate fans being on his shoulders? Or is this admitting our transfer failure?

Or sell? Will he come back and bite us on the arse.

He obviously has talent but is terrified of showing it to the world. This year he could have been competing for a place in the euro squad; now, would Roy take him?

I'd plonk him in the reserves. He needs to adapt quickly and he needs to adapt to the club more than he seems to have. I like him, hes got a lot of potential, but he needs to play with a freedom that the pressures of our first XI aren't allowing.

The obvious option isn't there. He should be a member of the squad, it's up to him to force his way into the first eleven though. He's got ability that's the important thing, confidence or mental strength can be instilled into him by good coaches, and that's what we'll need to do, right from the start it's been said that he was bought in as a long term project, and that is what he'll be.

He should be on the bench. Get Aquilani back and let him show Hendo how it's done.

problem with that is, will his potential remain untapped if he stays on the bench? Fleeting minutes here and there don't exactly make players good. And if he does work on his mental strength, will the fans knock him back down if he has a poor match?

And i'm not convinced mental strength can be instilled by coaches.

"Jordan, you're a great player and you've got the world at your feet"

"Then why am I on the bench?"

I agree the reserves would be the best place to help him, but that seldom seems to happen these days (irrationally as far as I'm concerned). Maybe the Europa League will benefit him next year.

He needs to toughen up. Remember when Lukaku nearly amputated his leg and Henderson was on the sideline asking who it was? That's what I want to see more of. I'm not saying he should become a hatchet man, but he definitely needs to be putting himself about a bit more.

Keep him in squad, as we will take another massive hit on the transfer fee, if try and get rid. Is he worth more than £7/8 million now and that is only because he is English.

Our only hope is he gradually improves over time.

How about Skrtel slapping some sense into him before every game?

each to their own but for me he has shown flashes of real talent. a geniune eye for a pass and not the charlie adam hollywood pass bullshit but the defense splitting striker one on one with the keeper type pass. there is no question he has struggled and no question he has probably played more often than he should have this season but for me in terms of talent displayed I see absolutely no difference whatsoever now with henderson and the level lucas was at when he first joined. I can't call myself a henderson fan but for me he has definately shown enough to persist with next season and beyond.

You compare him with Lucas but in his first seasons here he was a back up for Alonso and Mascherano.

And then when he wasn't a back up he was being slated. Can you honestly say neil you never wanted rid of lucas?

never. I wanted him dropped for certain home games and even that opinion I'm starting to reevaluate.
I certainly prefered lucas to mash as lucas was far more accurate with the ball and positioned himself far better to snuff out danger.

Not on the bench, in the squad. Spearing is a squad member but he sill gets a good amount of starts. This will be the same for Henderson, especially with the added Europa League games next season. Simply put, if he takes his chances, he'll stay in the team.

Spearing only got the chance through injury. If we don't have injury problems at RM or CM next season (as we should have more players to cope), he'll only get cup games really. They might be too far spaced out to get up a head of steam.

I certainly think there's more chance of Henderson coming good than Jonjo. I'd tell Hendo to spend his summer in the gym with the weights and then lend him to a newly promoted team (Southampton would be ideal) for the first 3 months of the season and reappraise the situation after that.
