Honda

That rumour has been knocking around for over a year now hasn't it?

Given that the window has now closed and I doubt we are looking to January yet there is probably not a lot in it

Linked with Honda again today. Sources originated from Japanese media.

Goal.com picking up the rumour:

Liverpool are considering a bid for Japan's standout performer from the World Cup, Keisuke Honda, who is thought to be available in the January transfer window after suggesting he wants to leave CSKA Moscow.

Sankei Sports reports that a CSKA director has said of the situation: "We will not lock our players in. If the bid is fair, we respect the players' will."

This after Honda's agent, Kees Ploegsma, told Sport.co.uk: "When a big club comes in he will want to leave but at the moment that has not happened."

However, Sports Nippon have claimed that: "CSKA and Liverpool already started the negotiation."

It seems that if a big club make a bid for Honda in January, he will be likely to leave, but Liverpool face competition for the midfielder, with AC Milan also reportedly interested.

Shirt sales in Asia would rocket, unfortunatly 99% of them wouldn't be 'official' merchandise

He would bring in a huge amount of cash nonetheless. There's plenty of mongs in Asia who support a player over a club and will happily dip into their wallet.

He does have a bit of talent too, but sadly that this feels like a side-issue in this case.

It's not just about shirt sales. It's about brand recognition and revenue that generates.

I agree, it would be good for the club and we could possibly generate his purchase in official merchandise alone.

Plus I think he was great in the World Cup and would be a benefit to the squad.

I wouldn't mind Honda at all.

Good set-piece taker, very skillful on the ball, decent pace and good range of passing as well.

Is it completely off to actually reckon he's a bit like Kuyt just with perhaps little less power better ability overall?

I'd say yes...all the signs are there in that line.

Perhaps I've just always thought he reminded me a bit - as a type of player - of Kuyt. Hardworking, good physique and covering a lot of ground. Decent in both attack and defense.

I like the look of Honda, esp. in the World Cup and in CSKA Moscow's Europa league matches. Question is, where will he play? He's not a winger and we've got enough players in the withdrawn attacking role just behind the striker.

We're just buying him to appease the mongs in Asia with their open wallets.

But for every Dong Fangzhuo/Qu Bo there might be a Park Ji Sung/Lee Chung Yong? 😛

What an idiotic post.

Saying he had "decent pace" is worse.

He doesn't really.

Saying that I believe player X has got decent pace is worse than calling Asians for spastics?

What planet are you from?

I like him too and he would play behind Torres. Do we really have that many good options there?
Gerrard of course but I'd rather see him as CM with Ming.
Cole? Hasn't convinced me there yet and can play on the wing too.
Kuyt is a good option for certain games but not the ones where we need to unlock tight defenses.
N'Gog? Yeah right...

Although I hate the idea of clubs buying players for marketing purposes in this case I wouldn't mind as he would definitely improve our squad.

And he may not be the fastest player around but isn't his lack of pace exaggerated here? I've never considered him to be a slow player.

There lots of people in Asia who follow a 'star' player over a club. Especially so if its one of their own.

Anyway, I really hope we don't sign him. Hype aside, he's nothing special at all.

Ha, done with that stupid world cup ball I noticed.

I've never seen him do anything apart from a few decent freekicks against crap goalkeepers.

How many times have you seen him play? (a genuine question as I've only seen a handful but always liked what I've seen)

Only A handful of games for Japan because he has spent his career in crap leagues, where he averages a goal every 7 games.

He's far from 'the star' people would have you believe.

He's been mostly instrumental whenever I've seen him though. Very good ability on the ball, decent range of passing, skillful and fast, at least in thought. Keeps the ball moving around at pace.

I wouldn't mind him at all. Of course not for any silly money but could we get our hands on him for a fee in the region of £8-12M I'd be happy enough.

That's a bit harsh, Squiggles. Firstly, I don't think anyone called him a "star" player. Secondly, he averages a goal every 3 games for the past 2 seasons.

I'm not saying they did, but he does come with a sense of undeserved hype around him.

The season before last he was in Holland, a place where goal-scoring should be dismissed almost instantly.

You have a very strong opinion on a player you've only seen in a handful of international matches.

You'd be wise to ignore any irritating hype caused by a couple of free kick goals and just judge him by his performances. I too have only seen him a handful of times but I've been well impressed. The performance in Champions League knockout stages away against Sevilla(or Valencia?) stands out for me and I've entertained an idea of us signing him ever since.

The marketing boost taken into account I don't think a price of around £10m would be that high. He's not a 'star' yet but he may have the potential to be one.

I simply think there's better, more suitable footballers out there.

Juan Mata is worth the extra cash, as is N'zogbia.
