Is Carra still good enough?

Most of you already know where I stand.
I'm interested to know if you think he's still 3rd choice.

To reiterate, I think he's a liability and if Coates isn't good enough to replace him then we should look to buy another defender.

I started worrying about him last year but thought he'd be ok for a few more years until the new manager and a new system came in. I know we were down to 10 men at the time on saturday but he was left on his arse for all to see from a fast break. I feel with even 11 men that based on this system that Rodgers prefers, and playing a high line, then yes, Carra imo will be a liability at times this season.

Not really, but we all know that.
As you say Coates needs game time, and/or ew need a good look at Kelly in that position. What about Wisdom is he the same as Kelly in reverse? ie a right back WHO can play center back.

regards

I don't think he's capable against top class strikers anymore ... I would rather let Coates make the mistakes and learn ...

Agree with most of the posts so far,I'm all for starting Coates or shifting Kelly in there to see will it work.

I can't see how starting Carra is going to benefit us in the long run.

It's time to gamble I reckon.

It's not really a gamble though, is it? I love Carra - a legend and loyal servant, but playing him now is detrimental for Coates' future and our future. Throw him against Balotelli and co - I bet he does well and makes it hard for Agger to get his place back in 3 games.

Neither of them are ideal really, Carra nor Coates are that mobile so putting them up against some top class strikers is, lets face it, worrying. Coates has shown he can read the game well, but when he get's caught flat footed it costs us and him because he's got no recovery in him, and he's prone to mistakes too.

Carra has the experience, Coates has time on his side and is great in the air, neither are what any of us would preferably like to see against top class players, but then, it's hard to keep a great centre half as 3rd/4th choice, you just have to hope that the few good performances they are capable of, come when it matters.

Unfortunately he's not good enough anymore. Would rather give Coates a chance for the 3 games that Agger is out. Like the idea of Carra playing the cups though

We need to know what we have with Coates - Skittle used to be 'prone to mistakes' too and look what happened. We cannot let him languish on the bench this season ... It's a waste for both player and club.

Course it is, the problem is it's a key position and any team hates putting out their 3rd/4th choice in key games. Even teams like City and Chelsea whom arguably have more expensive players in reserve at centre half.

Yah I guess ... but he's, imo, 3rd in our depth chart and hence should be ahead of Carra when Skittles and/or Agger is rested. It's the season for transition ...

Another thing aswell that was notable against WBA and for much of last season is that for all of Lucas' improvement, we still keep leaving gaping holes in midfield, particularly infront of our backline, it needs sorting ASAP, we can't have another season like last year of having zero dominance in the centre of the pitch.

Coates needs the chance to play at this level. He's an International player for one of the best teams, so he needs to prove he's ready. If he makes mistakes, he will learn from them. If Carra makes them, will he?

Absolutely not. He's been declining for three years, gets horribly exposed too often and resorts to hauling down his man whilst protesting his innocence.

If he is played too often he is likely to give away penalties and will be at risk of a red card.
