If this topic has been done in a slightly different way - Apologies.

Anyway. I say bin the league. This whole thing is stupid. No fans in the stadium? Fake crowd noise on the TV. Players getting rone'd up daily....This is NOT football. This is a pale imitation that is pandering to corporate masses. Balls to that. I'll just watch tinterklacker clips for the next six months. I'll just avoid the 7-2 smack down handed to us on the weekend. This thread is nothing to do with that.... I swear on Bruce Grobbelaar's gloves..... ;-)

This is what every other fan was crying 6 months ago. Asking for it to be cancelled now screams of self interest. The same issues some of us pointed out why project restart needed happen are still there. We need the tv money to keep rolling in. The EFL is on the brink and cancelling it would kill it off.

Let’s see how it plays out and if we are seeing clubs getting 4+ first team players catching it then pause it. I think we are in for a grim winter as it is but cannot predict exactly what is going to happen. That’s why I’m not going to knee jerk in to cancelling it.

A bit rich to want to bin the league now. Was a different tone here between April - June.

You're ignoring the fact that people are still watching it.

Therefore TV companies are still paying.

If the games stop, the TV money stops or they ask for it back.

If the TV money stops or they want a load back then we can't pay anyone wages & neither can any other club.

Footy clubs turnovers look big, but they pay it out the following season, they do, or very rarely, build coffers of cash, & their outgoings are usually very close to their incomings.

They're all precariously run, a season of no TV cash could send a lot of teams under.

I wonder what their ultimate legal position would be in terms of honouring players' contracts.

Because the players wouldn't technically be able to honour their side, either. They can't do what they're paid to do.

I suppose effectively they'd have to be made redundant.

You forget what the players pointed out last time, which is that they pay so much tax, that without it the NHS would lose vital funding, so whatever happens it is imperative the players don't lose their salaries, for the sake of the NHS.

Players could sue for compensation and breach of contract etc but the problem would be where do they go. Its a small market, its all well and good if one club is out of business and cant pay wages, a player will have their contract annulled and move on. But if the whole league is suspended there would be nowhere to move to and anybody willing to sign a player would be paying much lower wages.

Yeah, that's my thinking too. Ultimately the axe is going to fall on the players because that's where all the money ends up.

They aren't paid to play. They're paid to play when the club wants them to, under a contract of employment.

The club would have to argue that the contract has been frustrated, but that would be question of fact in each specific case.

For example, if a player has a five year contract, then sitting out one season would not prevent the player from playing the other four. But if a player will be on free in the summer, then there may be no reason for the club to employ him further.

Fair point, they're not in breach. But they are redundant, which was really my point.

If only Henry had coughed up some of his own money to sign more players we could make redundant.

I'm with red, from a purely personal perspective. I'm just not enjoying the football in this sterile format.

I don't just mean I'm not enjoying getting beat 7-2 - in fact that match possibly gave me my single moment of excitement, this season, when Salah scored to make it 2-1; I didn't particularly enjoy the Chelsea & Arsenal matches; yes, I got some satisfaction from them, but was it gripping viewing? .. was it f'ck

I know there's more to it than that & the implications of binning the league are far reaching, but from a purely personal/selfish perspective I would like it stopped until it can happen properly

I would be open to shutting down the league for 6 weeks and making a decision to continue based on the number of cases among players and Alisson's injury prognosis. I think we should definitely take a break, as much time as needed so that the premier league can come up with stricter protocols (and for Alisson to get back to match fitness).

I think you're going to virtually alone on this one Red.
Maybe, .but you get my point right...?. If this league continues it will go down as an interesting curio. I’ll concede that. Thing is - It really isn’t anything I’m arsed about. I do find it vaguely interesting (especially when watching it without the fake crowd noise) it’s like some kind of weird social self-flagelliation. You know what I mean? Watch a game without the crowd noise and you’ll see what I mean.

Footy has gone bonkers - I read yesterday that Ozil was being praised for paying ‘Gunnersaurus’ the mascot because there was no crowd. I suppose it’s so absurd it’s funny. I Deffo get that.

I know what you mean. There's a sort of suspended reality about the whole thing - it's football from a different dimension that doesn't really have any effect on life here.

Yep. That’s exactly what I mean. I guess in that regard when looked at through that bizarre prism it is fun. Completely removed from anything that has gone 140yrs before. A curio and one that will be watched. For me I’ll just not watch it that seriously.
