Liverpool Football Club are expected to wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence ahead of their match with Toulouse tomorrow in respect of 11-year-old Rhys Jones, who was murdered in nearby Croxteth last week.

A club spokesman said: “There will be a fitting tribute, but that is all we want to say until we have consulted the boy’s family.â€

The youngster was an Everton fan and the Toffees’ players visited the site of his shooting today to pay their respects.

Liverpool, conscious the tragedy has shocked everyone in the city and the country, will pay their own tribute.

Good, I thought we had been a bit quiet since this happened. I would like to see us do a minutes applause for the poor lad.

I'm glad the club are going to commemorate Rhys' memory. Things like this cross any football divides. I thought it was a nice touch by the Everton players to visit the site where he was shot and lay some mementos.

Blackburn and Rooney also left some flowers at the site.

Given the lad's obvious love of the game, I thought all clubs should have observed a minute's applause at the weekend.

Personally I find a minute's silence far more respectful.

Either way, it's the very least LFC can do.

Poor lad.

That was a nice touch from Shrek.

I actually think silence is better, but it's nearly impossible to get.

I remember when there was a minute's silence for MAtt Busby's passing and some Leeds fans were very audibly singing 'there's only one Don Revie'..

Strachan was captaining Leeds and looked like he wanted the Earth to swallow him up.

Good on the club.

As for applause/silence, there was a poll in Football Chat and most thought silence was more respectful. 40 thousand people being silent is far more moving than applause, but these days there is to many cunts that shout during the silence its easier to drown them out with applause.

Shame it didn't.

That's the point, isn't it? Silence is too risky with those few bellends around to spoil it.

Incidentally I don't agree with those who feel we should have done something sooner. That could have made us seem like we were trying to intrude on private grief, so I think we've played it the right way. I'm not Parry's biggest fan, but credit to him on this occasion.

Anfield will echo to sound of Z-Cars
Aug 28 2007 Tony Barrett and Mary Murtagh, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL Football Club will today pay Rhys Jones the ultimate tribute by playing the murdered youngster’s beloved Everton anthem at Anfield.

The Z-Cars theme tune “Johnny Todd†– which traditionally heralds the Blues’ arrival on to the Goodison Park pitch – will be played prior to You’ll Never Walk Alone before Liverpool’s Champions League match with Toulouse.

Liverpool chiefs made the unprecedented move after being inundated with requests from Reds fans who wanted to mark the 11-year-old’s death and show solidarity with his family.

Chief executive Rick Parry made contact with the Jones family who informed him they would be delighted if the club were to stage such a unique tribute. Rhys’s parents, Stephen and Melanie, will be at Anfield for what is sure to be an emotional occasion and both are expected to wear Everton colours in memory of their son.

Today, Rhys’s uncle, Neil Jones, told the ECHO the couple were overwhelmed by the idea of such a show of solidarity from Everton’s historic rivals.

He said: “When I told them about the proposed tribute at Anfield, Melanie said playing Johnny Todd at Anfield would be a unique event, a complete one-off, just like Rhys, and a fitting tribute to him as it was his favourite tune.

“She's also pretty sure he'll have a little mischievous grin on his face at the thought of being the cause of it.â€

After the two songs, there will be a minute’s applause and the Liverpool players will wear black arm bands in memory of Rhys.

The idea for Johnny Todd being played at Anfield came from ECHO feature writer Tony Barrett who put it forward on his blog on the newspaper website the day after Rhys was tragically killed.

The idea was picked up by numerous Liverpool fans who contacted the club to appeal for it to be acted upon.

Chief executive Rick Parry got in touch with the Jones family to discuss the proposal.

Seconded,Grungey.

Kudos to the club.

I'm doubly proud today to be a fan.

Same as everyone else, I'm glad the club are doing something.

Sometimes people use words flippantly, without realising their true meaning, that makes it hard to find the right word to describe a situation like this. But this really is so tragic.

I think it is a wonderful & fitting gesture. Solidarity beyond football.

Now get the bastards that killed poor Rhys - however our puny, pathetic laws won't allow true justice to be done, deport them to China for real retribution.

BTW - shouldn't this thread be a sticky Mods ? It was nearly lost to the nether regions.

Agreed, a Liverpudlians a Liverpudlian...

I actually met someone last night (over here in Canada) who knew the lad's family and he mentioned the tribute as well. I found it a bit hard to believe that the club would play Everton's anthem as a tribute but it's a top class move by the club. Red or Blue, 11-years old is far, far too young.

I was actually doing a bit of trawling, trying to find out when was the last time (if at all) that YNWA was played at Goodison.

Think it was 1989.I'm sure we all know the circumstances behind that gesture.

I think it's appropriate;this is grief that both red and blue halves feel.

(I could be wrong tho;it may have been played later as well.Apologies if I'm incorrect)

No, he'd not have a mischievous grin - he'd be too upset about being dead. I cannot stand that kind of tosh. As everyone has said, it's good and right that we're doing something tonight, and I just hope the idiots are drowned out by the rest. Poor kid.

Fuckin hell Macca, give the fella a break.

Well I find it offensive. Tragedy is tragedy. Anyway, the tribute tonight was beautifully done, thank god. Very moving.

The TV feed didn't show JOhny Todd;just the last bit of YNWA and the minute's applause.

Had the parents wanted,we could have had the minute's silence instead of the applause.

This is Anfield,after all.

Anyway,it was a nice tribute.

Onwards,Redmen.

Finish the Frogs.

Do any of you scousers think the bitterness between us and the Blues will maybe abate after this? First time since 89 that there's been any real show of Mersey unity, isn't it?

That was moving. I cant believe the poor lads family turned up, they have more strength than I have. I saw quite a few people break down and it really hit home what a loss this was.

I hope the little bastards that did it rot in hell.

There is no bitterness from the Red half Bunny and my mates who are Blues are sensible lads who don't get involved in the thuggery side of football and have a laugh and a joke about it all.

Will it change the moronic elements of both clubs? I wish it would but I very much doubt it.

I just hope that it forces the older heads to put the young ones in check a bit more.

Half of my mates are blues and there is no agro between us. I enjoy watching the derby with them because the banter is superb and there is never any trouble. I hope it will diffuse some of the trouble of recent years but as sheik said, the nobhead element probably wont let that happen.
