Happy new year all!!! 😉

Not the best source:

RAFA BENITEZ has signed long-term target Max i Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid, according to sources inside Liverpool FC.

The Reds boss was linked with a swoop for the winger back in 2008 but has now secured a deal to bring him to Anfield on a short-term loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

The deal is perfect for cash-strapped Liverpool as Rodriguez, out of favour at Atletico, is out of contract in the summer and would not command a fee.

The 35-times capped midfielder, who has hit 30 goals in 107 appearances for Atletico, is desperate for first-team football to secure his place in Argentina's World Cup squad.

He will link up with fellow countryman Javier Mascherano on Merseyside.

Daily/Sunday Express using the same headline, but saying different in article:

The Times the only credible source saying Rafa trying to get him on loan, but face competition from Boca:

Obviously, take with a pinch of salt..., but would love to see Maxi at Anfield, and have wanted him here for a number of years.

I wouldn't mind some of this...

That would be marvelous.

I choose to believe it for a few minutes, for no good reason but that I'm sleep deprived and beginning to drink.

Why is he out of favour at Atletico, though? Any dip in form (I know their entire team has not been playing well this season).
Anyway, he's a good player so here's hoping he does sign for us (and improves Rafa's "not so good" record with Bosman players.

Thrilled. Granted he hasn't been his usual self this season - starting from 2nd half of last season but the entire Atletico Madrid team is in shambles. He could well do with a move away, with his national team captain here and having played with Torres before, coupled with Spanish speaking contingent, he could be a shrewd mid season signing.

Sign please! On loan for 6 months and then for free.
Excellent player that Ive wanted us to sign for years.

Torres will be extremely happy if Maxi came here. Hes been advocating his signing since he joined us.

Agree with everyone above. The guy is quality and has nothing to lose, nor do we. Could be a cracking signing if it comes off.

Good player but where are we going to play him? He's a right winger but Dirk is one of Rafa's untouchable so it would seem that we'll be loaning him only to play him out of position on the left.

He's played regularly on the left too - so no problems there - in fact he can play 'in the hole' too.

Or enabling us to move Dirky Dirky inside to cover for Torres - meaning we won't get another striker.

Apparently has / has had a terrible attitude - at least I remember hearing / reading as much. Still, couldn't care less. This would be an excellent loan signing.

I know mate, it's the thought that we could sign Messi under Benitez and he'd have to be accommodated because of bumbling Dirk Kuyt

Post, Echo and Telegraph reporting on this too now.

He has been linked with a return to his homeland, with Boca Juniors being mentioned as a possible destination, but reports in Spain have confirmed “a Merseyside club†are close to doing a deal for Rodriguez, who will become a free agent in June.

Liverpool were keeping tight-lipped about the deal but Benitez has admitted bringing in new faces during the window is a priority.

“We are working hard and trying to do our jobs, and we’ll see if we can do something,†he said.

“We are looking in the market but it’s not easy to find good players available because the majority of them are playing in top sides. But we are trying to find solutions if we can.

Maxi is the player torres said he most want to bring to anfield. doesn't he play on the right side of midfield? interesting...

I think he can play central midfield too ... but if he's right midfield that means he'll play left mid as Dirka Dirka is our RM.

Just to repeat my earlier post. He can play LW or RW but prefers the right, he is also pretty decent in a supporting striker role a la Gerrard currently.

I've watched him a few times with Atleti - and he seems to be favor a more central role though he's a 'right winger' in their formation most of the time it seems. I don't remember many games on the 'left' so it's hard to comment where he's better but I hope this is not another player who will be played to his 'weaker' position ...

Maybe there is a change in formation coming? We could be going back to 4-4-2 perhaps? Teams have sussed out how to isolate Torres from Gerrard, it could be time for a change and Maxi's signing could be the catalyst for Dirk playing up front? That would throw up some interesting CM conundrums!

'bumbling Dirk Kuyt' was one of our best players last season.
[/quote]

And this season? And the year before?

He's much too inconsistent to be deserving of a guaranteed spot.

That may be so, be he's not deserving of the tag 'bumbling' either.
