Non Existent Midfield

We needed a forward at the beginning of the summer and we still need one. It's gonna cost us dear this season.

We're also gonna miss Alonso if this Aquaman never gets fit.

I really wish Yossi had started.
I really hope Babel doesn't start another game.
It was so poor.
Lucas really couldn't do anything, Mascherano played 2 good balls all game.

Gerrard has to play in the midfield. The Gerrard/Torres partnership will be useless if the midfield can't get the ball to them.

They never got in the game. I just hope we bring in some striker, who can play with Torres and also adequately replace him when there is a need.

We look too thin.

Would have been a better display in midfield had that lad from Basque region of Spain who once said that he "would never sign for Real Madrid" turned Franco-loyalist twat had not left us so late in the off-season.

It wasnt Lucas and Mascherano who cost us that game.
It was a guff performance from every player excluding Johnson and Benayoun. We'd do well to play that cunt again. I hate the fact this was our first fixture. We always play shit at whl and i just hate the fact united and chelsea got easy games.
The way id look at it is this.
If we beat Stoke on Wednesday we'll be 2 points better off than after those 2 games last year.

"But we'll break up the Gerrard, Torres partnership, blah, blah"

There is no basis for a partnership if the midfield can't string 5 passes together. We need to seriously consider pairing Gerrard with Mascherano in the midfield.

And the fact that Gerrard/Torres couldn't string two passes togheter in the first half.
Babel was shite as usual. Lucas was good.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

Spurs pressed us really hard in the first half and nobody looked comfortable, that's why we struggled to string passes together and got absolutely nothing going.

They couldn't keep that up for 90 mins and that's why we were better in the second half, but unfortunately we weren't good enough today.

we can blame the midfield for not creating chances but the defense let in two goals which really should have been defended better.

And it could have been more were it not for Pepe Reina and Robbie Keane

We can play:

---------Torres-----------
Riera----Yossi-----Kuyt
-----Masch--Gerrard----
That should be the way to play until Aquilani's ready.
We were lucky to just concede two. The cohesion between Carragher and Skrtel was non existent. The communication accross the back 5 was lacking throughout.
Our crosses were still lacking as were the numbers gett.ing into the box.
Torres and gerrard lacked control and direction, kuyt was unusually quiet, lucas and mascherano never reeeally got any amount of authority in the middle. The big concern for me was how much we buckled under the harrasment of spurs. We will be getting that all season from teams outside the top 4 and we need to handle it better. Starting on wednesday.

I think it's clear that we have to play Gerrard in the deeper role. We were completely over run in midfield, we needed that player who was going to be planted in the centre of the pitch that you can play every ball back to when nothing else is on. Mascherano isn't, and shouldn't, be that player. His job is to put himself about and break play up where ever the ball is. And Lucas simply isn't able to do it, it's not his fault, it just isn't in his game to be able to read the positions of other players and passes.

As much as I love the Gerrard/Torres partnership it isn't gonna work if there's no one the play the ball up to them, Gerrard dropped deeper as the game went on to collect the ball, the problem then was that Torres was left isolated up top.

Until Aquilani is fit, Gerrard needs to be moved deeper with Benayuon starting behind Torres.

Either that or a 4-4-2 until Aquaman is fit with Kuyt off Torres or alternatively on the right with Benayoun of Torres.

God we have so few realistic options which are any way close to being an improvement on the first 11.

And Aquilani is gonna need time to settle in too.

I fear because we're so lacking in CM, everyone will have unrealistic expectations of Aquilani, I hope the mobs give him a chance.

I actually hoping we don't need him (aquaman) because if we are pining for him a month from now it's probably because results aren't going our way.

That midfield beat Manchester United 4-1 at old trafford a few months back.

This ONE game reaction is ludicrous.

Yup.

Agreed Onky, roll on Stoke!

I do hope we sell Voronin though, and add a quality attacker to the squad. Our bench today was horrible.

I want us to play 442 against Stoke, but i doubt Rafa will do that.

Yeah.

Or maybe this:

Torres - Kuyt

Yossi - Gerrard

Lucas - Mascherano

I'm not over-reacting about the midfield as a whole. It's just I don't want a repeat of today. It was the most disappointing part of our whole performance. I wish they had of tried a bit harder.
More worrying is the fact our whole front 4 were bollocks. If even 1 of them fires we can win a game, if 2 of them do we SHOULD win a game. But when all 4 of them play so poorly (against a top 6 or 7 side) you're on a hiding to nothing.
Lucas and Mascherano werent the issue.
