Our problems this season.

So I've been holding off in posting this, as I wanted to see how we progressed and developed as the season went on.

So nearly two months and 7 games in to the season, we all know that bar one performance (Tottenham) we've not played anywhere near to the level we were playing at last season.

Our defence is still shite, but that's by the by, the personnel that we have are good players, it's just individual errors that are causing the problems.

On to my main point, every time I've watched us this season we seem to have been lacking something, we have no cutting edge, or creativity in the final third, and I've put it down to one thing, we really miss Luis Suarez.

Now everyone knew we would miss his goals, but what we miss most imo, is his closing down from the front, his constant buzz and pressing, him screaming at players to push on and press the opposition defence, his influence on his team mates, he used to scream if they fucked up a pass or missed a chance, so they always knew the pressure was on. His pure intensity in the game we sorely miss. Not only that but his ability to create goals from nothing is evident.

The problem we have is the precedent that's been set, teams are setting up defend in numbers against us, knowing they'll be hard to break down, and ruining us on the counter. Now we've had a defeat to villa and west ham, other teams know we can be beaten, we've lost the aura of, when you play Liverpool you're lucky to walk away with a 1-0 defeat, teams know we can be beaten.

I know we have Balotelli who I reckon will score goals but he's just not the same player as Suarez, and Coutinho's massive loss of form has resulted in a loss of creative spark. Lallana looks closest to providing it but he's still settling in. Sterling can't do it on his own, and Sturridge being out hasn't helped matters at all, even when sturridge and Balotelli play, we still can't get the ball to them in creative areas, we lack an incisive final ball.

All in all, we have SO much work to do, whether that's buying players who fit the mould better, or educating our players who we have to be more patient, and stop wasting the final ball, I really don't know, but cause of the high expectations set last season, which I do believe was an anomaly, and didn't truly reflect the level we are at, it means that we're set for disappointment this season.

That's my 2p worth on our season so far.

I can't be arsed proof reading it so there will be errors.

- Missing Suarez
- We've got a fucking rubbish goalkeeper
- Injured players
- A defensive midfielder who doesn't think it's his role to defend anyone or anything.
- Too many new players to integrate
- Lack of leaders in the team.

First time in my life I put some depth in to a post and you come and shoot me down.

I give up.

The main issue is the lack of movement. That helped destroy teams last year. This season everyone is looking at someone else to make things happen too often instead of grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck.

Injuries, new players, Gerrard and Mignolet. Only time will sort out the first two, only Rodgers can sort out the latter.

Part of the reason why the 4-3-3 hadn't worked well for us this season is not simply just due to Balotelli not playing like Suarez, but also because we've been playing with just one reliable attacker in Sterling.

After Lallana's performance against Boro, and with Balotelli now having played more games, I'm more encouraged that things should start to look up now in our attack even if we stick with the 4-3-3 while waiting for Sturridge to return.

Okay, I know it's "just Boro", but they're not that poor a team (probably on par with some of the bottom tier teams in the Premier League), and I liked Lallana's display of urgency and leadership in the game, together with his wide array of moves. He was obviously up for the game, and I was impressed. If he can build on that and carry that form into league games, I believe the 4-3-3 will actually look a lot more effective than what we've seen in the games so far. Once Sturridge returns, we can switch back to the 4-4-2 but until then, I think we'll start to improve once Lallana can keep playing like he did against Boro. 4-3-3 with two willing runners out wide will actually give us more balance right now and also help in defensive transitions, so I tend to favour that if we can get the attacking part tuned up.

We're still all at sea when it comes to defending and especially at defending setpieces, but that's a different story. No idea how we fix that at this point other than stringing the silly error makers up by their balls and tweeting the pictures to their friends and family.

I'd add changing the system and tinkering with the lineup too often to that.

Bar Sturridge, Sterling, and to a lesser extent Lallana, we don't have anyone who can move forward with the ball in the final third. It's just pass pass pass to nowhere while the opponents wait. Balotelli just doesn't offer himself as an outlet, he waits and takes too many touches completely destroying the quick pass and move we had last season. We are losing the ball too much in midfield, and we have no tackling ability or onus, opponents just cut through our midfield like cheese when we lose the ball. Downing looked like a perfect number 10 last week and we know how crap he is. Only our wing backs looked anything decent but that has been found out as well.

And the injuries. You don't buy that many players at an average of 10+ million a player and use injuries as a reason for shit performances. How many more players do you need? 30?

I think our main problems so far are expectation and impatience.

Yep. I agree.

We started off last season slowly too, performance-wise. I think Spurs illustrated perfectly that we have not lost it, we tore a confidence-filled team to shreds on their home ground.
Bedding in the new players to our system is obviously an issue when there are so many (6-7 against Villa) and with injuries to key players, two in particular, Sturridge & Allen, have been sorely missed. This has only highlighted Gerrard's weaknesses, which will not be so prominent when the midfield/attack start firing.

To a certain extent the same can be said of the defence, they are under more pressure so far this season because of the weaker performances further upfield. However we are only looking at the CBs to solidify as partnerships (Sakho-Lovren & Lovren-Skrtel) to see an improvement on last season, and I believe those 3 are all good enough to do that. If Valdes comes in then then I believe that will be the catalyst for better goalkeeping performances, from Ming too as he learns from Valdes.

So if we expect mediocrity and chill out while waiting for improvements - things will be much better?

No maybe just try put everything in to context. We are five games in. Don't expect mediocrity but maybe not to finish 1st and yeah wait for the improvements that will inevitably come over the next few weeks/months. You should be fine then!

Last season we didn't really kick on with our performances until November.

If we able to keep up with Chelsea/City (6/7 points behind) until November, think we will be ok for top 4.

Our issue is we are moving the ball too slowly allowing teams to re-organise the defence. This then means players such as coutinho and lallana primarily are attempting things that aren't on because the forwards aren't moving as much as last year..

ALso we aren't pressing as high up the pitch which again could be down to the forwards we have this year....

I'd add changing the system and tinkering with the lineup too often to that.

We changed the system a lot last year and I'm not sure how often the line-up stayed the same too. IT's only a problem if you're players aren't performing, or they aren't good enough
