playing golf

Ahhh the power fade - a joy to behold.

For me, I slowed my swing down and then came through the ball more smoothly. Although that is not all I did any other tips would be pointless having never seen your swing.

If you are right handed, keep your left elbow tucked close to your torso/hip on your downswing . People end up straightening their arm too early and locking the elbow joint straight. The shoulders end up opening right up, turning the swing plane from inside to out one and putting that spin on the ball.
Simples.

Sounds easy.

I bought myself a nice set of irons yesterday. Going to try them out on the range in a few mins.

Yeah, i just aim slightly to the left, and it usually swings back in the way i hit it.

This is golf kid. Not pitch and putt.

same thing applies, surely.

I know.

Are you addressing the ball correctly?

Try lining the toes oup in the direction you want the ball to go, then making sure your feet are at right angles. e.g.
_________
I I

What i mean is, if you stand with one foot slightly ahead of the other, it will either draw or fade the shot. Or if you address it like a duck (i dont mean quack at it like a duck mother to its egg), i mean with you Feet like this \ / then you'll be off balance.

Any recommendations on a Driver for a mid to high handicapper ?

Personally I wouldn't go near any of the big names - Taylor Made, Big Bertha, Sumo etc.

Go to your local pro shop or driving range and get them to talk you through what's available and try them out. Sometimes it can depend on your swing as to what flex of shaft you need and all sorts.

I used to slice quite heavily with the driver (and I still do on occasion!) but the driver I bought about 18 months ago was an Adams 460cc head. I've weighted it for the draw to help counteract my slice swing and its worked to a degree.

In terms of slicing, it used to be a major problem for me because my hands were through the swing too quickly so I was in effect doing a minor version of the cover drive in cricket. I've slowed the hands down and therefore controlled the swing better. The harder I try and hit the ball, the more the slice comes into play because in effect I'm using my hands too quickly.

There's an old guy on one of the municipal courses i play, that walks the course with a bag and 4 clubs. A 3 wood, 4 iron, 8 iron and putter.

i swear to you the guy goes round in a lower score than most of the people i know. To steal a phrase from Tiger Woods golf, he doesnt 'rip it', but lets the club do the work. everytime its straight, gets good distance (although not as far as when you try to mash the ball into december) and knows exactly where its going.

Over hitting is the biggest problem for a lot of people.

Yeah but I'm more concerned about just being utter wank whilst they're all fairly good. Not fussed about the score. I'm first up too! I bottle it when people are watching at the first tee.

Take an iron then, if you're not happy to hit a wood accurately, then take a 3/4 iron and play the percentages. Hit it straight and take 2 or 3 to the green, better that than spanking it onto another fairway or topping it and hitting it 3 feet and taking 6 to the green.

Just remember, you're not going to hit the green in one massive drive.

You're probably right. I just don't want to make a tit of myself, and when I do something bad I can't "block it out" for about another 3 or 4 shots.

I'll report back tonight!

Am I supposed to know what a cover drive is ? Give me a break !

Although if I'm honest I think I'm doing exactly what you're describing too.

Well I was up first and instead of the group of 4 waiting behind us, the entire party of 16 was there all watching! I was fucking bricking it but hit a humdinger with the driver and that was that. Played shit after that but no one was watchng other than my partner then 🙂

What sort of distances are people hitting their clubs ?

For example :

7 Iron

4 Iron

3 Wood

Driver

?

Just interested. I've been hitting the ball pretty well lately on the range and wanted to know how far behind I am

7 Iron - 155

4 Iron - 195

3 Wood - dont use one, hit me five wood 200 of the deck and 220 off the tee

Driver - anywhere from 10 foot in front of me to 300 yards but generally 260-270

Very similar to lefty's above, actually I have a question of my own too? how far further do you guys hit your irons from the tee as I find i'm struggling with distance control on par 3's?

I usually ease back a bit witgh my irons off the tee to a par 3, so even though I can hit my 5 iron about 180yds (off the fairway), I would use it for a par 3 of about 165-170.
