Shaq staying?

"Everybody is excited to play again and to defend the season we had last season," Shaqiri told Liverpoolfc.com from the team's training camp in Austria. "It's very difficult but we try to achieve again a lot of things and we want to win a lot of games.

"We have the capacity, we have the team who is still hungry and wants to win many titles.

"Of course it's different in the Premier League than others, and I had the pleasure and I'm very proud of what I achieved in Germany with these two [titles] and I know many countries now.

"But with Liverpool, to win the title last season was unbelievable, something different after 30 years for the fans and for us too.

"We are really excited and we always want to win every game but we know it's going to also be difficult. The other teams also want to win, so I think it's going to be an exciting season.

On a personal level, Shaqiri hopes the new campaign brings about better fortune that allows him to contribute more on the pitch.

Injuries limited the Swiss attacker to just 11 appearances in all competitions during 2019-20, though he did still net in December's Merseyside derby victory at Anfield.

The 28-year-old continued: "Always if you are injured or if you are not playing, you're frustrated. But I'm looking forward to this season and trying to help the team all the time, so I have the chance to play like the first season.

"As a team, I just want us to achieve a lot of things. I think we have a lot of good players in our team, everyone can play and we try to make it very difficult for the coach as always.

"I'm trying to give my best too and to help the team to win games, titles – that's the most important thing for me."

Of course he is. Three years left on his deal, he'll never be offered the same money as he's on now. Why would he go ?

More from our end. We clearly aren't bringing in anyone substantial so I'd rather not clear players out unless the buyer is paying over the odds.

I would actually be in support of Shaq staying if we think he’d stay fit. He’s a threat when he plays he just never gets a run or is injured.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. He may be an immense player when gets a run but that isn’t happening when he’s injured 80% of the time.

I mean, yeah that was always a given wasn't it, no other Champions league side will come in for him and pay him what he's paid here. Also he's winning medals left right and centre without contributing a whole lot - getting paid and accolades whilst not doing much; not a bad life.

On a footballing note, I've never minded him - he looked decent against the blue shite, which is the last time I can recall seeing him play - I did assume Klopp wasn't a fan of his for whatever reason but who knows maybe it was just fitness and injury issues the whole time

I love Shaq and I wouldn't mind if he stays.
However, my problem with him is where does he play? I don't think he's that comfortable on the wing any more, just like Ox.
Shaq's more adept in playing between the lines imo. Remember his goals against Man U?
He's just not a like for like replacement for Mane and Salah. Obviously it's quite hard finding that type of player but someone like Sarr is a step in the right direction imo.
It's becoming a problem, we currently have wingers in the squad, Ox, Shaq, Wilson but none of them really suit us. Could actually throw in Origi as well.

Is Ox a winger? he's always looked his best in the middle when he has space to run into?

Ultimately none of them are good enough to start regularly and we don't need all three - so at least 1 possibly two of the three will leave this summer, just matters whether someone does go alongside Wilson.

18/19 season he had 6 goals and 5 assists which is not bad for someone who made most of his appearances in the last 20 minutes of a game.

He was during his Arsenal days.

I like Shaq and what he brings to the team in terms of creativity, unpredictability and an outlet in several positions. Its just a shame that he cant stay fit. He's nearly always either injured or coming back from injury, and cant get any consistency at all.
So in a Covid-19 free World, you'd think we would have moved him on now, but seeing as the situation in football and the economy is unclear then maybe we should hang on to him for another season. And hope that he can stay healthy and contribute. There will be more than enough games.

His salary isnt that different from his Stoke deal, and lower than his Inter deal so I doubt he'll have any problems getting quite a similar deal at other interested clubs. The sticking point could be the fee, which would be lower than what we would probably be expecting given the financial climate.

If our whole squad was fit and in form he would be my first replacement for Mane or Mo at wide forward rather than us trying to show horn Origi into that role.

Yeah 100%

I didn't really understand why he didn't play much last year. Think this will be his last, though

Any player who can put in the kind of killer cross Shaq planted on Gini's head for the equaliser against Barca is welcome to stay and fight for a place AFAIC. He's got ability and always backs himself to do well. I seriously doubt we'd find better for the money we're willing (or, more to the point, not willing) to spend.

exactly. I have this vague recollection of him slotting a shot in the top corner right at the end of that 2-1 defeat to arsenal (didn’t count) and thinking again we need to be bringing him into more games as someone who is a proven match winner when fit.

He's done well when he played, but I can't shake the feeling that he's scratched Klopp's car by accident so will never ever get a run of games for us.

(Or Klopp's a secret racist. Who knows)

Lazio want Xherdan Shaqiri from #LFC - their interest 'has been confirmed'. Igli Tare, Lazio’s director of football fell in love with him when he was playing for Basel & the player is seen as a market opportunity with the Reds wanting to sell at a affordable price. [@CorSport]

What does "affordable" mean? If it means "acceptable to an Italian club looking to stiff us as too often before" (as it well might considering the source of this) they can bugger right off.
