Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko claims he has held talks with Liverpool.

Both Juventus and Aston Villa have been tracking the 21-year-old with Manchester City also in the hunt as Roberto Mancini steps up his pursuit of a long-term successor to the veteran Patrick Vieira.

And although Sissoko would relish a move to the Premier League, on the back of the Reds' contact, he admits that a switch across the Channel is unlikely as he looks to earn a recall to the French squad, with just a handful of appearances since his initial call-up two years ago.

"I would be delighted if one day I am lucky to join a big English club," he admitted.

"But I don’t think about it so far.

"I had contacts with English clubs, notably Liverpool.

"It is up to me to go on improving, to become a world class player, to play in the biggest clubs and to join the French team as soon as possible.â€

Liverpool are trying to put together a deal to sign Lyon star Michel Bastos, according to reports in the French press.

With Kenny Dalglish likely to be handed the reigns at Anfield on a permanent basis, club owners FSG are ready to back him in the transfer market this summer, after splashing out on Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez in January.

According to reports in France the Liverpool management team have identified 27-year-old Michel Bastos - who can either play left-back or on the wing - as one of their top targets, and have already made enquiries about buying the Brazilian in the summer.

Didn't see that coming. Both cost their respective clubs about 15-20 million so I doubt they'd be coming on the cheap.

Lyon will be tricky to deal with as per usual.

the carrot to lure them to liverpool;

'look at our left back options and holding midfielder options and tell me you wont get a game'

With the acquisition of Carroll, pace and accurate, dangerous crossing from wide positions is obviously a top priority. Is Bastos any good?

I'd be over the moon if we got Bastos.

Actually I probably wouldn't as he'll cost a fortune. The prospect of him playing for us would excite me no end, though.

Bastos was the first choice LB for Brazil at the world cup. He went to Lyon the previous season for about 18million I think.

He's always been a left winger though and my appreciation of the situation is that he's been shoehorned into the LB role to fill a gap - a little like N'Zogbia was a couple years back.

It'd be quicker to do a list of players we're NOT in for.

But not really etc..

Bastos is quick and very dangerous going forward, but I still see him as more of a wing-back rather than a winger and thus someone who might not necessarily be ideal as a wing-forward in a 4-2-3-1. Plus the fact that he's 27 and that he's likely to cost a bomb would have me leaning against him. We'd get someone like Elia and Costa for cheaper and they have the potential be much better players than Bastos in the long run.

As for Sissoko, again, I don't really think he's the type of player we need in central midfield. He's more in the mould of a Vieira/Essien i.e. an enforcer/box-to-box midfielder rather than a holding defensive player in the Hamann/Makelele mould. IMO that type of player is what we need far more as in Gerrard and Meireles (and with Shelvey, Suso and Cole behind them) we have players with the talent and ability to dictate the flow of the game. What we really need is some strength, organisation and stability behind them and a Hamann/Makelele type would be ideal for that.

I'd obviously not say no to a new Vieira/Essien but Sissoko is still a very raw player (not too different from Momo IMO) and we'd be far better served at looking at M'vila or Sissoko's midfield partner in Toulouse - Etienne Capoue, both of whom play a more defensive holding role and are also more mature and more cultured players.

We can but dream. Our first team needs as much quality as we can get. Unfortunately we don't have unlimited money to throw around.

I'm pretty sure Toulouse didn't pay anything like that for Sissoko. Maybe you're thinking of Lyon's LB Cissokho?

As for Bastos, he's class - like a more industrious version of Robinho. Scores about 1 in 4, and has more to his game than the likes of Ashley Young (who would probably cost even more, being English). I'd be all for it, personally.

Yep I was thinking of Cissokho.

I like the look of that,MM.

It kind of depends on how the King wants us to line up next year. If it's a 4-4-2, Sissoko is perfect next to Gerrard. If it's 4-3-3, he's more than capable of playing the defensive part but then someone like M'Vila would be even better.
He's capable of playing the holding role, but is also a very dynamic box to box midfielder who scored goals.
I think he's ace. And would be an excellent signing.

Bastos is very very good, but is he left wing back/winger or what? We need players that are going to be used in their natural postion.

He's probably to old and will demand massive wages. Will end up in Real Madrid.

I really can't see us playing 3 at the back on a regular basis. Nor would we need to, just to accommodate Bastos, who is a natural LW, and who I've also seen play very well as part of a front three.

Do you really think he's as skillful and creative as Robinho?

That's not the impression I have of him. Struck me as a player more similar to maybe Di Maria.. or Marcelo.

I agree with all of this - I'd be really surprised if the current owners spent heavily on a 27-year old Brazilian. And M'vila is the player I'd like to see ahead of Sissoko.

Maybe somewhere between those extremes then. He's definitely not a full-back masquerading as a winger though.

Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has encouraged Juventus to make another bid for Michel Bastos this summer.

Aulas has already hinted that Lyon need to sell once the transfer window opens again after a shortfall in TV revenue in French football.

Bastos is one of the players earmarked for the departure lounge. The 25-year-old Brazil international wing-back has been frequently linked with Juventus in recent years.

Quoted at the UEFA Congress, Aulas said: “Last year Juventus made us a concrete offer and were effectively close to signing Bastos, but we blocked everything, preventing the deal from going forward because, after a period of reflection, evaluating the pros and cons, we decided not to sell our player.

“Now it's a different story. Things are different. If Juve were to make an interesting offer again, if the player wanted to do it, if his agent were to agree and if the price were right, then we could also evaluate the hypothesis of letting him go.â€

But I'd rather we were buying 23/24/25 year olds than 27/28 year olds. Especially at the price he will demand.

Bastos has Real Madrid written all over him.

I don't think we're that bothered by tattoos anymore - else, why would we have bought Raul.

Marcelo is maturing as a player and is still only something like 21-22. Bastos seems an unnecessary signing.

Doesn't Bastos play more as a winger these days?
