See where you're coming from mate i really do but The Two Manc teams destroyed Spurs by being quick and mobile on the flanks and through the middle.
Granted we don't have players that they have...but In Downing, Suarez and Bellamy i'd fancy them to cause the slow pairing of Dawson and Kaboul big problems.
If we play Carroll or Kuyt, i just think it might play into their hands.
As for Maxi, i'm a fan myself and he has to come into consideration. Just think against Spurs, pace and mobility is key.

Actually, I think it's time to give Carroll and Suarez a run together up top and see of they can gel. If we're going to pay £35 million for a big target man, let's play to his strengths for a while and see if it'll realise it's considerable potential. When Gerrard is fit, Kenny's got a decision to make whether to stick him back in the middle at Adam's expense, or give him free rein on the right to go where he wants when we have the ball (quite apart from his excellent crossing ability there).
So I see our best 4-4-2 as this - back up options in brackets.
