Go back to the 5-1 beating of Germany under Sven. Stevie played in the middle with Scholes and was amazing. Unfortunately the arrival of Lampard has cost Stevie a better career for England as he was move everywhere but the middle

If he could have continued to play in the middle after Scholes retired he would have had more respect for his international career.

For some with 100 caps I can't remember him ever dominating games like he did for us or others with as many caps in attacking positions have. Even Beckham the useles manc had some Roy of the rovers type games.

He's been wasted for England being mostly played out of position and limited by the tactics. Thanks to Beckham, who treated England matches as kickabouts at his own spoilt kid birthday party, he didn't even get an opportunity for the odd free kick thanks to David's determined punts wide or over the bar until one finally went in for that mythic 'Roy of the Rovers' moment. It's ironic that it's only now, as his power is waning, that he's getting more freedom to show what he can do.

I didn't see Keane make his comments,, but I do think it's well overdue if someone rebuts the 'he's so great because he's in a shit side' argument. Even Carra subscribes to that, bizarrely, and it IS rubbish. Messi wouldn't be a far better player if he shone in MK Dons, so that is just nonsense. If you can excel in a team full of brilliant players, if you stand out as the star in that kind of stellar eleven, you really are a genius. That's why Dalglish overshadows him. He's still a glorious player, though, and I hope he enjoyed the night.
