The Open

Westwood for me. I think the course sets up well for him. For an outsider, Paul Lawrie is playing better now than he ever has. I also expect Garcia, Poulter and Harrington to go well. Really looking forward to it and gutted i can't be there this year. I usually go on the Friday but i've got a family wedding to go to.

Seriously Garcia?I know he's striking it better than ever but he will never win a major until he can learn to putt.

Backed Westwood already and going to have a small each way on Henrik Stenson who is hitting form

Boylesports are offering each way odds on the top 8.

I think I heard a stat that 7 of the last 8 winners finished in the top 20 the previous year, so I'll probably have a look at last years results and pick someone out of that

Anyone but McIlroy. Whilst his performance at the US Open will be the reasoning for him opening as favourite, golf doesn't usually work that way except for Tiger in his pomp. McIlroy could become every bit as good as Tiger but he isn't yet.

I have a feeling Donald will break his duck here, he's been on form, he won at the Scottish Open last week and his consistency over the past few months has been unreal.

Someone mentioned Garcia, the only reason I'd bet on Garcia would be to lay him. He can't putt and if you can't putt you won't win an Open.

I've no idea what odds Kuchar is but he's been over here for a bit acclimatising and put in a solid performance for a Yank at the Scottish Open, and is comfortably in the Top 10. He would be my "outsider".

EDIT: Kuchar is 41's on Betfair.

If you don't have a paddy power phone account then I'd have a punt with them. They are offering treble the odds any player up to £50 for new accts and paying 7 places. 33/1 Westwood is ridiculous, as is any player in the top 50 really when their odds are trebled!

Garcia's form has improved greatly of late and he has a good record in The Open. His ball striking is so good, he only has to put reasonably well to give himself a chance. I'm not saying he's my favourite but he's certainly got a chance IF his putter doesn't let him down. With the wind getting up, I'm increasingly liking the chances of Westwood, Harrington and Paul Lawrie.

There's no doubt that Sergio is a quality golfer. But, his temperament along with his putting inconsistencies tend to rule him out for me. The recent Munich event was another example of Sergio "choking" for want of a better phrase. He was the superior golfer going into the play off but still didn't manage to convert the win.

I'd be delighted for him to win a major as I think golf and sport in general needs characters and talents like Sergio but my money will never be an additional monkey on his back.

Have to agree with Spion about McIlroy and Garcia and have backed Rory not to finish in the top ten.

Schwartzel has been very solid this year, proved he can putt at Augusta, had an ok finish in last years open and is a decent alternative to the short odds.

Mickleson isn't playing very well and have got against him with Goosen in a matchbet.

Out of the favs though I've backed Westwood. He's always a contender (5 top 5's in last 7 majors, 3rd two years ago, 2nd last year) and is a decent price cos of McIlroy's win in the states.

I had a bet on Westwood, and Harrington as a bit of an outsider , oh and Darren Clarke as a lot of an outsider

Early days but Rory is 2 over after 14.

And Vlad, Darren Clarke? I know he's a red but bloody hell. Thomas Bjorn is a massive red and he's the leader.

and he is only three off the leader 😉.
It could be a very sneaky little EW at 100 and something to 1

about 440 yards with a slight dog leg left 😉

I'd love Darren to do this. With shit weather coming tomorrow I'd worry if he can keep it tidy enough, but he loves his links, and it rains and blows a lot in Portrush, so he could be well set up.

I wouldn't discount Rory yet either. He always has a hot round, and he's been managing to stay in touch without playing well within himself. He'll go close enough.

I'd love to see Clarke finish this off. he deserves a major. I hope the weather's lousy tomorrow...that'll suit him.

The weather forecast on Sky News said it was going to be wet at Sandwich on Sunday. The BBC TV weather forecast said it was going to be dry. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

I bet on a few players but the only ones left in the running are Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn. I figured they are both mature, rugged types who should be able to perform in bad weather. However I think that one or more of the Americans could make a dramatic charge on the last day, including Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.

Apparently Rickie Fowler always wears orange on the last day, in the same way that Woods always wears red. He doesn't look very hard but his performance in unfamiliar links conditions shows that he is a tough little bugger.
