Fourth place this year really is looking like it's going to be a tough long haul, It'll require the best of us. I think we have an advantage in that we really are doing the business against the top teams in and around us, however we're at a disadvantage as we're in the worst position at the moment, and we have serious problems finishing games off. I think it's fair to count City out of this argument, I also think only an optimist of Dreambelievers former stature could argue that United would get pulled down into the battle for the champions league, so it's a straight up five teams for two places.

I don't like to jinx them as they have been fantastic and they really proved it against United on Saturday, but Newcastle surely have to fall at some point, they've played four of the top six, picking up three points along the way, not great, I expect them to struggle similarly against us and Chelsea, and I do expect there momentum to run out soon. Hopefully for us it will, but hopefully they'll nick some points off of the others along the way, still I shouldn't write them off, they have been great, I just think they'll eventually falter.

Spurs are the team that really fuck me off amongst this lot. I can't speak rationally about this club as I hate them more than I've ever hated anything, they're constantly overrated and there fans are complete arses and working in London, people and papers make them out to be Barca on roids. Still hate aside, they're in the best position, by quite a way, however they've been on a very nice run lately of quite easy games, and the next few games are kind of them too. I don't think they're great against good opposition and there squad is very weak for me. They're kind of the opposite of what we are. I don't know if it's logical reason or just my hate for them, I do expect them to falter, probably around Christmas time into January, and once they falter, I don't think that squad (although Harry can) is the type to bounce right back, however the position there in is so great, will they falter enough?

Arsenal, are really quite unpredictable amongst this lot, they're rely on RVP to the max right now, but so what? He's fantastic, we relied on Torres (okay not quite as much) and came second, why can't Arsenal break into the top four with him playing like he is? Well it's summed up by the game at the weekend, Arsenal lose points at baffling of moments, and against the top sides they just don't seem to turn up this season. Not to mention an injury to RVP (which isn't a rarity) will leave them toothless. Still they always seem to rally when you least expect it, so you can never count them out.

Then it's just left with Chelsea really, they're the chronic underachievers this year, maybe suffering from old players not adapting to a new policy by a young and promising coach combined with players who clearly miss there old club. Chelsea for me have a grit though, a bit like United, even when they keep faltering, they'll be there or there abouts (even with their clown of a centre back). I think AVB is the right man for them, it's just going to take time. Next season will be a big one for them, they have Mata, Sturridge, Lukaku, Ramires and some other promising younger players, they have a strong base and will no doubt strengthen it further with more young promising players, they just need to pick themselves up now and soldier on. I think they'll beat Tottenham come 22nd of December and that will be a big pick up for them, and hopefully a big knock down for Spurs.

I've thought a lot about this since last week, and the result yesterday kinda concreted it for me, it was a great result at the end of the day, fantastic in fact, but the position we're in, and the point in the season we're now in, we really really needed three points to keep up with the pack. We are potentially 8 points behind Spurs and I don't have faith of beating Chelsea in the long haul. My heart says we'll do it, my head isn't so sure.

I think it'll be

City
United
Chelsea
Spurs
Liverpool
Arsenal
Newcastle

However and irrational, hopeful, side of me just has a gut feeling it'll be this

City
United
Chelsea
Liverpool
Spurs
Arsenal
Newcastle

We have a huge task ahead of us, and I'm glad from a neutral perspective that we've got such an exciting and close league this season, but why did it have to be this season of all seasons?

I seem to be one of the few people who don't think City will win the title.

I reckon they will finish 3rd.

A good run could see us really look the part. Spurs are the surprise package for me this year- I wasn't expecting them to look quite so dangerous, but they have been excellent, even if I think they've had much more luck than ourselves.

I think the commentator said something about the last team to have as good a start to the season as City are having, ended up second and 7 points behind.

Chelsea also had a great start last season, if I remember right.

City have to be favourites, but anyone saying it's all but over, is wrong.

They have looked bloody strong though mate, and even yesterday when they showed weaknesses they still came away with a point.

Having said that, only 5 points in it, and they have Arsenal, Chelsea and then us again over the next month or so

91 I'd have thought. We lost it on goals scored in 89

Sorry yeah, 91. It was us though.

I maintain that we will always give a good account against the top team except spurs so far but it is against the so call lower teams we struggle to get all the points that are costing us. Unless we do that we will never get 4th.

[/quote]

Agree with that.

On paper we should be in a good position regarding the games we still have to play. We've already played Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Everton away and United and City at home, and Spurs aside we haven't done badly.

Looking at our games in December they look (again, I stress on paper!) better than the fixtures some of the other top 4 challengers have

I think the top 4 will finish like this

1. city
2. manu
3. spurs
4. chelsea

I've put them in order of who I think will drop least points.
city aren't going to drop many points at all and may do an 'untouchables' and go the entire season unbeaten.

next manu, whilst I don't think they overhual city I don't see them dropping many points either. they are with in tocuhing distance of city with city only dropping 4 points all season. manu look ordinary but they have the ability to grind out wins regardless form.

then you have who are on an absolutely incredible run, with quality throughout their side. in the likes of parker they can grind out away wins and with the likes of modric they have the magicians to unlock even the most stubborn defenses at home.

then you have the 3 way dog fight of chelsea, arsenal and ourselves and I put chelsea winning out.
I really thought our problem this season would be away wins but our achilles heel is our in ability to break down stubborn defenses at home.

I think it'll be City, then United, then a fairly large gap to third, with the next five teams separated only by a few points. Too close to call.

Can't have been us in 89. We lost the league on GD in 1988/89 and won the league in 89/90.

Did you mean 99?

I think Newcastle will wane off. Spurs will not continue the form they're in - best form they've had for near 50 years. Chelsea do not look the same force. We're a new team gathering pace. We have a chance of top four definitely.

I thought Newcastle would already be slipping by now though to be honest. And I thought they would get beaten at the weekend but actually got a very good result.

Agreed but do we really have the squad depth? Imo city, united, spurs and chelsea have better options on the bench than we have.
We don´t rotate much- perhaps it´s good if we can ease in our bench so they can take over when injuries start hitting us or when players go out of form.

Any Toon supporter would be happy with top half, with a chance of europe. The squad isnt there for the campaign, if Ba is injured or (probably) sold, no one else is going to step up. The usual mentalists will demand Pardew be sacked if he doesnt deliver CL football.

Hopefully Liverpool can push on from here Hart kept Citeh in the game yesterday

We need to strengthen the squad Ossi, yeh. I'd caveat my statement with that. Right mid and a goalscorer a must. Saying that, don't forget our form post Xmas last year...

which teams play in the north west?

jeopardy

Liverpool have won only 2 of their opening 7 top-flight home games for the 1st time since 1998-99. Last won fewer in 1984-85 (1).

Its the home form that's letting us down. What an irony considering how we struggled to get points away from home last season.

Our squad is much better than Spurs, who's weakness is there depth. Yesterday we had Bellamy, Carroll, Maxi, Kelly, Carragher, Gerrard and Aurelio not starting, all could arguable be first team players. Then you've got the likes Spearing, Coates, Flanaghan, Robinson and Wilson as well, depth is not our problem.

We had 11 wins and 1 draw in 90/91, thats when Kenny left. We would probably have won the league had he stayed on.
As for fourth, I think we have a great chance. Four teams are battling in out for 3rd and 4th imho, Chelsea, us, Spurs and Arsenal. We are definetly in with a great shout, and as I said yesterday the coming games against "easier" opposition will define our chances. Chelsea look a bit lost at the moment, but have got enough quality to be right up there. Arsenal are an injury away to Van Persie before their form will go downwards. Spurs have gone from having a great squad to having a great first eleven. They've been extremely lucky in the last two away games, but will be right up there in the mix. If they get some injuries I think they'll struggle.

We also shouldnt underastimate fatigue. City, Utd and Arsenal all looked a bit knackered from the CL games. We also will only get better and better. And are usually very strong in the second half of the season. If we are up there with the top 4 come january I'll be very optimistic about our chances.
