Yaya Toure

Not quite sure how I feel about this....

"Manchester City and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure thinks he is not regarded as one of the best players in the world because he is from Africa.
Toure, 30, has 22 goals this season, helping City to win the League Cup and challenge for the Premier League title.
Samir Nasri recently said Toure would be celebrated (external) as one of the world's best midfielders were he not African.
In an interview for Football Focus on BBC World News, he said: "I think what Samir was saying was definitely true."
The midfielder has won league titles in four countries - Ivory Coast, Greece, Spain and England - and was part of the Barcelona team that won the Champions League in 2009.
He also feels fellow countryman Didier Drogba and Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o are undervalued because they are African.
"To be honest, proper recognition has only come from the fans," said the three-time African player of the year. "I don't want to be hard and I don't want to be negative, but I want to be honest."
Toure feels the media should do more to promote African players.
"If we play well and we don't have the recognition from the media, we are not going to be where we want to be," he said.
Toure also feels African players need to do far more to stand out, drawing comparisons with Barcelona duo Andres Iniesta and Xavi, both former team-mates of his.
He says Iniesta and Xavi are often praised for their attacking skills, but rarely singled out for criticism when they fail to defend properly.
In contrast, Toure claims he is regularly picked on by the media when he makes a defensive mistake.
The Ivorian is also unhappy that Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the best players in the world along with Cristiano Ronaldo, is recognised around the world but players like himself are not.
He said: "If you go to any part of Africa now, people will say, 'yes, we know him [Messi]', but when you come to Europe and say 'Yaya Toure' people will say, 'who is that?' Some will say they know my name but not know my face. But they will know Messi's face."
Toure, who played in Belgium, Ukraine, Greece, France and Spain before moving to England, says he will be disappointed if he is not named player of the year by the Professional Footballers' Association.
He is one of six players on the shortlist, alongside Chelsea's Eden Hazard, Southampton's Adam Lallana and the Liverpool trio of Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge.
Asked if he would be unhappy not to win the award, Toure replied: "Definitely. As a champion, as a winner, I always want to win."
Asked to reflect on the fact there has only been one African winner of the Ballon d'Or - former AC Milan and Liberia striker George Weah in 1995 - Toure cited the significant contributions made by players such as fellow Africans Eto'o and Drogba at club level.
"Those players are more than legends for me and Africa," said Toure.
Asked if he knew if players such as Eto'o and Drogba also felt under-appreciated, the former Barcelona player replied: "Definitely."
He added: "I am very proud to be African, I want to defend African people and I want to show to the world that African players can be as good as the Europeans and South Americans.""

Just reading that article it just seems he's playing the race card, any thoughts?

He makes a fair point, although he's deluded if he thinks he is anything close to comparable to Messi.

He's heard the result of the POTY award then, poor the Yaya!
Being lauded as one of the best to play in the greatest league in the world and pulling 200k a week isn't enough. Poor the Yaya.

This is like when them really fit birds who turn heads in every club moans on FB that she looks ugly and nobody interested. Stop fishing Yaya.

Sure African football and footballers are generally unappreciated, I mean the African cup of nations is a joke, imo.
I personally regard Touré as one of the best players in the world and so do many other football fans as well.
But no African player has been close to Messi and Ronaldo's standards.

It's got nothing to do with him being African or being black.

A black man was regarded as the best player in the world during a time when racial hatred was widespread.

I don't think they are @Modo, Eto'o and Drogba are widely considered 2 of the best strikers of their generation.

If you're good enough, you won't be ignored.

is it cos i is black ???

I thought Drogba was very much appreciated for a player who bloomed pretty late in his career and Eto'o was also regarded highly. There just happened to be some fantastic players around picking up the awards.

Messi has to be one of the greatest footballers ever getting annoyed about his popularity is pretty stupid, it's like being annoyed Tiger Woods or Roger Federer are better known that you.

Almost every football fan in Asia will know who Drogba and Eto'o, or for that matter, Yaya Toure are. That's just down to the popularity of the PL there though. Not sure about Europe tbh.

That's what I mean, if you're good enough you get what you deserve. Well except Henry, who should have been given the Balloon door or whatever at least once between 2002-04

There were some prestigious winners those years....
2002 Ronaldo (fat, although not fat at that time)
2003 Nedved (Henry came second)
2004 Shevchenko

Arsenal's inability to do anything in Europe probably worked against him.

France being complete balls at the 2002 World Cup, with Henry getting sent off against Uruguay, and getting knocked out in the QF of Euro 2004 probably didn't help his cause either.

I think his comments have been blown up somewhat by the journalist. The headlines don't quite ring true for me.

Beyond that, it's just another Premier League footballer with a large ego. Nothing new really.

True

I don't think Yaya would get into my all time premier league team. I think my central midfield would still consist of Keane, Gerrard and Veira. He be in the squad though.

He probably has a lot more cause to play the race card over recognition of his skill than Sol Campbell does over his captaincy ability. But I can't help but think that a lot of his anger is just bitterness at being not deemed good enough to play for Barca.

I agree Henry is brilliant, but it stinks of rose tinted specs to suggest he should have been given an award in 2002 in anticipation of his purchase of this club some 10 years later.

How about George Weah - 3 times African player of the year and a Ballon d'Or winner and FIFA World Player Of The Year. It seems he was highly regarded. Come to think of it I don't think I ever saw him play.

I presume he was pretty good - Better than Yaya?

EDIT: LOL - I just read that he played for Chelsea and Citeh - The late 90's were a fucking blur to me!

I'd forgotten too, but he was only on loan at Chavski and played fewer than a dozen games for Citeh, so perhaps we have some excuse. (If I tell myself that often enough, I might even end up believing it. 😉)

Difficult to compare Weah with Yaya Toure because the former was a striker whereas the latter has been most everything but. I would make Toure the more impressive all-round footballer by some distance, but Weah at his best up front would have been an asset to any side.

Toure's relatives have been far better players though. 😉

I hope this isn't a black player trying to insinuate racism where it's patently not true. Under appreciated my arse. The cheer that went round Anfield when he clutched his right knee was, whilst reasonably unsporting, a collective sigh of relief from a group of supporters from the opposition who knew exactly how good he was and exactly who he was.

This was a microcosm of how supporters around the world feel about him.

If this isn't a journalist trying to sell papers then Yaya can fuck off.
