After yet another atmosphere-free visit to what was once our swaying cauldron and is now a fucking tearoom, we score and half the ground (silent for pretty much the entire game) start singing this shite at a load of Turks who had sung all game.
Pathetic and embarrassing.
I miss the old days, as usual.

Yup, atmosphere has completely disappeared

That's weak - have to say I haven't heard that sung at Anfield before. I'm thinking it doesn't help that the sections by the away fans are the ones which usually go to general sale longer as most people (well at least I do) try to get their tickets as near to The Kop as possible if they arent in them.

My last game at Anfield was Cardiff last Dec (for drinkies!) and that was v good atmosphere wise, but it helped that we were top of the league, and we had a Suarez song to keep singing throughout!

It heard this on the tele and it did make me shudder, it's the kind of shit you'd expect to hear from one of the London clubs, next we'll be hearing that god awful "he does want him wants" song that Arsenal and Spurs are obsessed with. On a general point about the atmosphere, I think this season the fans are suffering a bit for the hang over of last season coupled with the sub par start to the season, I reckon the atmosphere will return, against Chelsea it sounded like there was quite an intense atmosphere.

Clearly, not enough Scando's & Paddies @ the match.

I think sadly, that apart from big games where the knowledgeable drag those less so along with them, there are so many people inside the ground now who are there for the experience, taking video on their phone and sitting hands in pockets watching as if it's the theatre that getting a sustained atmosphere just gets harder and harder. I appreciate we are a world brand and people love the club and travel great distances and at great expense to be here, but it's hard to understand what's going on around you if you are a newcomer or a one-off visitor, however fervently you support the club.
I felt the same when I went to Fenway Park. I am obsessed with the Red Sox and baseball and was overawed and emotional when I finally got to go there. But I didn't really know what the fuck was going on, despite watching the Red Sox for many years on TV. The nuances of being a part of the actual event passed me by a bit. Oh well, it's not going the change I guess, so we'll see how it pans out with the new stand etc.

Taking account of the away fans/day trippers/corporate tickets (10-15,000), there must still be a core of about 30,000 regular fans who go most weeks.

I reckon due to the cost now a lot of season ticket holders might only go at most half the time and farm their ticket out the other weeks.

Agreed, but there seems to be a much more passive attitude. Maybe a generational thing, everyone is used to seeing so much on TV that they forget they are not watching it on TV when they are there live or something. There's definitely something going on.

Centenary stand has always been awful though

I'd say it's defo a generational thing. There's less drunk youts coming out with catchy songs. Also our strikers have been shit, so there's that

Why Raheem and Sturridge don't have something I don't know

Yep. The last time I was in the Centenary Stand was for Gerrard's testimonial, which wasn't a good occasion to judge the place but I've been in noisier cricket stands. As Fabio said it's always dead. As for the Main Stand, that often seems to have several large sections of Ian Beale types having mini picnics and taking selfies all the way through the game, so I'm not expecting much to change when the capacity is increased. I actually wonder if football has suffered the opposite effect to theatre audiences in the TV era - you go to the theatre or cinema these days and people chatter away like they do at home in front of the telly, which is very irritating, but at football games they do the same, at the same volume they'd do at home in front of the telly, which makes the atmosphere weirdly flat. The domestic viewing experience has made us low-volume chatterers wherever we go. Lots who go now probably feel that singing and shouting is as alien to them at a match as it would be in their living room. Marshall McLuhan would write a book about it.

People sitting down are an audience, people standing up are a crowd. The former watches, the latter participate. No mystery.

Hard to get raucous when wedged into a seat with some baldy cunt in a high-vis patrolling, watching your every move.

I said that to my dad. It was fucking pathetic. We scored and they were still singing, so our knobhead fans in the Annie Road start singing "Youre not singing anymore"

First of all, they were singing. And Secondly, they probably cant understand what you are chanting at them, you fucking dicks.

Wound me up that last night.

Sterling does have a song. I can't remember the lyrics but it seemed to be to the tune of 'Galway Girl', or whatever tune Galway Girl ripped off.

I'd prefer to be standing in piss in the old Kop swaying & singing with my mates & thousands of others than sitting in those comfy seats next to some bellend taking photos, having his mate take photos of him with the pitch behind him, & watching the entire match through the screen of his phone.

Unfortunately that's not an option, and if we're gonna be forced to sit, I'd like to actually be able to sit down on my chair, not sit on a combination of the laps of the two people next to me and the shoulders of the person in front of me. Now the ideal solution would be to get safe standing implemented, I'd love to stand at Anfield, but I can't see it happening anytime soon.

It's disappointing the Luis Garcia song didn't come out last night (that I heard), should be a staple for European nights.

I noticed that chant and was a bit surprised given that I know how many feel about those sorts of chants. It was a bit shit.

I'm kinda sick of hearing the Gerrard one now. I know it's his last year and all but at least reserve it for when he's actually playing.

I had one of them next to me last night. He was actually filming the penalty.

If he wasnt 6 foot 5 and looked like David Haye, then I would have told the cunt where to go.

It's also a dreadful song, and has the word fucking in it. not ideal for the little 'uns. Much prefer Steven Gerrard is our captain.

I remember a CL group game from around 2002 or 2003 against Dynamo Kiew I think. In the back of the Centenary and some guy is there with his gf. She spends the entire first half reading the programme. Never looks up once. Also, how can you find enough to read for 45 mins in the fucking programme?
