I like this kid ... though I'm slightly worried about his attitude (was he one of the guys who Rafa benched when he tried to keep them up?).

If we sign him though, Henderson's future isn't with us.

Meh , I don't think hes good enough to start for us so I'm not interested at this point , we need to improve what we've got ,not add to the numbers

He's boss. Should have gone to a much better club then Newcastle in the first place.
Good signing.

Started the last 3 games. Doesnt play in the same position as Hendo though?

Signing players from a relegated club doesn't fill me with confidence, I know he was one of their better players, but still.

Wouldn't mind him at all.
Begs to question what will happen to the likes of Markovic and Henderson.
Lallana should also feel threatened by this move.

What has getting relegated got to do with it?
He's a good player.

Klopp got Piszczek from Hertha when they got relegated. Turned out to be one helluva right back for him. Doesnt matter at all if its the right player.

Signing a player that only performed in glimpses from a relegated club is hardly awe inspiring stuff is it? The status of the club has everything to do with this, because if the players wasn't outstanding at the lower level club, and he wasn't, what makes you think they'll suddenly perform that way at a higher level?

Playing in the Champions league with PSV? 30 caps for Holland including a World cup?
He was Dutch footballer of the year 14/15, and was voted player of the year for Newcastle 15/16.

He's boss. Shouldnt have gone to Newcastle but that doesnt make him a bad signing now?

Wijnaldum is a great option to have, would be a really good piece of business. Seems pretty likely to happen as well.

Liverpool favourites to sign Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and closing in on Estonian defender Ragnar Klavan

Liverpool have jumped to the head of the queue in the race to sign Georginio Wijnaldum and are confident they can strike a deal with Newcastle United this week for the coveted midfielder.

Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool coach, is also closing in on a centre-half having agreed an initial £3.5 million deal for the Estonian Ragnar Klavan from Augsburg.
After being frustrated in his attempt to lure Polish international midfielder Piotr Zielinski from Udinese, Klopp’s attentions have now switched to Wijnaldum.

The Dutch international is attracting the attention of several Premier League teams and it looks likely he will leave the North East rather than join Newcastle’s promotion push.

The 25-year-old moved to Newcastle only last summer for £14.5 million. Newcastle have set a fee of £27 million, but Liverpool are confident they can settle on a deal nearer to £20 million and there is some optimism on Merseyside that talks could advance significantly over the next few days.

Klopp’s side head to the United States on Thursday. Although he has already recruited four players, the German coach has made clear his desire to add more and he has the financial resources to do so.

Defender Klavan needs only to complete the formalities of his move from Bundesliga side Augsburg before heading to Merseyside this week. The 30-year-old featured in both Europa League fixtures against Liverpool last season, a tie Klopp’s side won 1-0 on aggregate. Klavan will be signed primarily as a back-up option – a direct replacement for the departed Kolo Touré.

Klopp is short of defenders heading into the new season, with Martin Skrtel sold to Fenerbahçe and both Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez suffering Achilles injuries. Joel Matip has been playing with a minor ankle injury in pre-season.

It is possible Klopp may even add another centre-back to act as an understudy, although that is more likely to be a youngster bought to develop alongside Gomez.

Klopp knows Klavan well from German football. The defender moved to Germany in 2012 and played well over 100 games for Augsburg. He previously played for AZ Alkmaar, where new Everton coach Ronald Koeman was among his former managers.

For the past three seasons, Klavan has been named Estonia’s player of the year, winning more than 100 international caps.

Liverpool have had problems agreeing a fee with Leicester City for Ben Chillwell. Left-back is another priority position with Alberto Moreno the only recognized senior player in the role.

Klopp’s pre-season schedule continued at Wigan Athletic on Sunday, with Philippe Coutinho making his first appearance of the summer.

Coutinho struck the bar and post during his 45 minutes of action in Liverpool’s 2-0 win Danny Ings and 16-year-old Ben Woodburn were the goalscorers.

Liverpool’s England and Belgium contingent, who featured in Euro 2016, will join the US tour, with Joe Allen and Emre Can the only late additions because Wales and Germany advanced to the semi-finals.

well it seems we are after him after having issues getting zielinski. I have to say out of the two i think wijnaldum is the better player.

If Championship is filled with £15 mill "steals", I start to wonder what Icelandic football has to offer...
Hes not really a championship player is he.
He got relegated but was very good most of the time for Newcastle.
His goals record in his last 5 full seasons is 14, 14, 20, 18 and 11.
Thats really solid.
Hes one of the few players I watched last year who I thought we should have signed.

Id be happy with this.

Karius
Matip
Wijnaldum
Mane
Grujic

All young and from what I gather quality players.

Im still concerned that Balotelli and Benteke are leaving and we arent replacing them.
All this squad building is excellent and all but we need some world class.

I think he's a good player. Not totally sure we need him, like.

I hope it means we're selling Henderson.

He was a player I thought would represent a decent signing for a midtable club this seasons so I guess it fits.

He's a good player who will, along with Mane, run in behind and cause problems. Whether he's enough of an upgrade is very questionable but he will offer something different to the mass of floaty AM types we have.

Decent signing if true. I'm guessing he would occup a wide role in 3 behind a striker, or would it be in a deeper role?

Definitely to that last bit.

I'm not sure we'll add any, though

The argument seems to be signing a player from a relegated club - in this argument I would all refer you to a player named Juninho Paulista who played for Middlesbrough - the team that got relegated many years ago after also playing in two cup finals. I think back and wonder how much of a difference he would have made to us with his ability to break down strong defenses back in the day if we had signed him. Just because a club is relegated does not mean that all the players are shit - all it takes is a bad manager - or a group of players in the team who decide not to play at their best for a number of games and it could happen to any club - just look at Chelsea last season or even LCFC the season before last.

Having said all the above thinking in my small head - I have no idea what this player is like but if he is one of those that had a great game against us when we played at Newcastle away then I am sure Klopp can make a good/great) player out of him.

I think we'll have the financial flexibility to do so. This fee is effectively what we got for Ibe and Skrtel put together, and it seems we'll be adding an extra defender on the cheap.

I reckon we have at least another 20M to spend, plus any potential fee from Benteke or other departures.

A lot of Henderson dislike here for some reason

If a player joins a club for £14.5m, gets relegated and doesn't do anything particularly amazing in that time... why the hell would we pay more for him?
