Villareal post-game: Keep the faith!

I think we played well, but so did Villareal. Like I was saying after the Dortmund game, this was going to be a completely different style of football, much more of a stereotypical "continental game" with a lot of passing and few real chances. Overall, I think we've passed the test in terms of the performance – we were patient when needed, made Villareal uncomfortable with our pressing and overall I thought we were mostly in control, which is not easy to do in an away game against a more than decent Spanish side.

Coutinho had a very subdued first 45 minutes; I wonder if he was feeling ill or something like that, hence the substitution. I thought Firmino did quite well, actually, despite being left isolated by teammates for parts of the game. Not the best game for Lallana; I really wanted to see Sturridge come on for him and was very surprised by Klopp's decision there. The only 2 explanations I can come up with are that 1) he plans to build the game around Sturridge in the home game and doesn't want Villareal's defenders to get used to playing against Sturridge at all; even a few minutes would "spoil a surprise", and 2) Sturridge didn't train well or has some attitude issue – really hope that's not the case.

Shame about conceding the injury-time goal, but I'm still optimistic for the 2nd leg. Let's not get into the mood of reflexively bashing the players and the manager every time we don't get a good result and support the team instead. I thought Allen, Lucas, Kolo, Milner, Clyne, Moreno, Lovren and Firmino all played quite well and Mignolet made a really world-class save on Bakambu. We almost earned a very good result, but lost our heads in the end; now we need Coutinho and Sturridge to produce some magic at home.

Disappointing in the end but 1 goal down at half time with home advantage to come means the tie is there for the taking. I think we'll have too much for them at Anfield.

Really poor in the final third. Dreadful final balls, insipid movement, Firmino was fucking awful, and Jordan Ibe needs to learn a trick or two or he'll be playing in the Championship for the rest of his career.

Thought the midfield played well, Toure was strong, and we looked comfortable until a lapse in concentration. The goal cocended doesn't bother me that much - the fact that we never looked like scoring was of greater concern.

C minus for Klopp tonight.

What the fuck was Firmino up to? He should have been dragged off at half time. Pissed off coz I really think we'd have won if Sturridge would have come on.

Blown it.

If only, but Sakho, Can and Origi and we would have walked this.

Moreno and Lallana do my head in, Firmino is in awful form and Ibe needs a massive kick up the arse to learn how to play football again.

Sigh...

"We're out"... Bunch of fucking women to say the least.
Anfield will be rocking and Studge and Coutinho will be starting.
Of course we can do this.

We need 3 at the very least. They're scoring once at least and they've a solid backline. That was a really shit result and disturbing that we didn't look interested in scoring.

We had a number of very good chances in the game I watched, Villareal weren't that good defensively, we should've scored.

Hopefully your bumchum Firmino doesn't leave the bench. Fucking pub player.

Pressing, holding up the ball, bringing teammates into play and hitting the post (via Asenjo save) in the 2nd half. I really think he played well. Coutinho and Ibe didn't do much on the left and Lallana also had a game where nothing was really working, so Firmino had to do too much himself and couldn't create much alone, but he already did well in the circumstances. Both defenses were sharp (until the final 5 minutes, when Moreno had a 1 on 1 and then we conceded) and basically won their respective match-ups against the attackers.

He was really poor Rurik.

Constantly giving the ball away. Didn't get into any decent positions, and linked well with attacking teammates on zero occasions.

I'm a fan, but he offered extremely little. He shouldn't have started up front.

That's not what I saw. The only thing he didn't do was run at defenders and create chances for himself, but he did offer a good outlet and brought teammates into play well, I thought. His role was to come short and use the ball well under pressure and that's what he did; Ibe and Lallana should have been the ones to run in behind defenders, but there was only one such successful run from Lallana (that was incorrectly flagged for offside).

I don't mind him starting up front, he's done well there now and again and when he plays well he can be a match winner. But you could see after a very short time that he wasn't in it tonight. He's been in poor form for a while and he should have been subbed early.

They're a decent side don't get me wrong but Klopp set us up like we were playing Barcelona at the Nou Camp. Honestly I'm baffled by his decisions and tactics tonight and that's not me being a smug twat in hindsight. We looked like we had zero interest in scoring
