That said, I was quite disappointed with him dropping so deep and getting into trouble, I think Boro were instructed to close him down early, but he did play some clever balls forward, having a hand in the second goal too. I just wish he didn't have to drop so deep, if he was freed of that responsibility then I think we'd see a different player.

Xabi shouldn't have to come deep so often to collect the ball but our back 4 still doesn't have the confidence to carry the ball out and start attacks. Perhaps they don't have the ability to do so. If Xabi didn't come deep and make himself available, we'll see a lot more hopeful punts forward.

Spot on....The role of the deep lying defensive midfield to pick the ball from defence to link up play with the rest of midfield is crucial, particularly when our CBs favour the long punt probably due to lack of clever movement from the rest of the team. We see that with Milan-Pirlo, madrid-gago, Manu-carrick, chelsea-mikel and the list can go on....
Xabi's passing range and technique clearly suits the deep lying midfield role but his lack of athleticism is really counting against him. Xabi did well against sunderland when they dropped too deep into their own half and was given the space by Diouf and Murphy. But he tends to be poor when the opposition is right up in his face. space is at a premium and is the reason why maybe he ain't that suited for the English league. So I can't understand why people on here think he'll do better higher up in midfield, where there's less space for him to turn and pick a pass.... He can hardly turn and dribble, he won't be able to win much 2nd balls tackling with his hip. He'll be better off in another team, probably in another league.
