Whats the difference?

If Liverpool are playing Man United and the odds are 3.0 (i.e. 2/1) for LFC win, 3.0 Draw and 3.0 for United to win; then if you fancy LFC you can back them at 3.0 and win £2 profit for every £1 you bet but if you're not totally confident about LFC winning but you're quite sure they won't lose you can lay United at 3.0 and win £1 profit for every £2 you bet. The latter bet means you obviously win if LFC win or it's a draw.
