Match fixing in snooker?

Officials are investigating Jamie Burnett's 9-3 defeat at the hands of Stephen Maguire after being tipped off by bookies two days before regarding an unusual pattern of bets on this exact scoreline.

With less tournaments and prize money these days it wouldn't be a surprise if this happens.

The black he missed was woeful

I've just seen it on YT. An absolutely disgraceful "attempt" for a professional player.

Cheers Liv

Ok yeah it was a bad miss, but i've seen far worse

Have you?? I can see why they are investigating it, it wasn't even close to the pocket. And for a professional thats a shameful attempt.

I've read that he knew about the match fixing claims, and the scoreline, before he went out for that session. He said he was under a lot of stress to win that frame.

Poppycock.

the fact i play every week probably means i am used to watching shit shots like that.

having watched it again, you're right, it wasn't even close

And he doesn't look the slightest but bothered when he misses the black and leaves it over the pocket
[/quote]

Yup and yup. That pink going in really fucked him because he came out reasonably well onto the black - surely he could've made it look a little less obvious though?

If these allegations are true though, I do wonder a little why he potted the blue as the positioning he got on it was terrible. He could've gotten away with missing that easily. Maybe to guarantee that Maguire would win the frame?

So did anything come of this?

Nope i don't think a date has been set for the formal investigation yet.

Snooker pair in police bet probe

Maguire won the match in question 9-3
Two professional snooker players have been questioned by police over alleged irregular betting patterns.
World number two Stephen Maguire, 28, and 33-year-old Jamie Burnett, both from Glasgow, were later released without charge by Strathclyde Police.
The allegations relate to a match between the two players at the Maplin UK Championship on 14 December 2008.
Police said a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal's office when inquiries were complete.
Stephen Maguire won his first round match against Jamie Burnett at the Maplin UK Championship 9-3.
Prior to the game, a number of bookmakers suspended betting after large amounts of money were placed on Maguire to win 9-3.
Burnett missed a black in the 12th frame, which would have made it 8-4.
Launched inquiry
After the game, the 33-year-old Scot denied any wrongdoing and said he knew the situation and the pressure had affected his play.
World Snooker launched a formal investigation and instructed specialist lawyers to help in the case.
Strathclyde Police launched its own inquiry in April.
Stephen Maguire turned professional in 1998 and is currently ranked second in the world.
He has won four ranking tournaments - the European Open and UK Championship in 2004, the Northern Ireland Trophy in 2007 and the China Open in 2008.
Jamie Burnett turned professional in 1992 and is currently ranked 40th in the world.
His best performances in world ranking tournaments were reaching the quarter-finals of the German Open in 1997 and Grand Prix in 1998.

Shocking effort and he left it on for an easy pot for the frame.

Can't find a link to the pink fluke. Anyone have one?
