Sambafoot can exclusively reveal that Liverpool scouts are at the Toulon U20 tournament to run the rule over Grêmio midfielder Matheus Biteco.

The 17-year-old is currently with the Brazil U20 squad in France, where the Seleção have impressed by winning their first three games in the group stage.

According to Sambafoot's sources, Liverpool have sent scouts to the tournament and defensive midfielder Matheus is one player being looked at as a possible signing.

Liverpool have a history with Matheus' parent club, Grêmio, having signed Lucas Leiva in 2007 and former Reds left-back Fabio Aurelio currently plies his trade at the Porto Alegre club.

Porto Alegre native Matheus has featured in Grêmio's Campeonato Gaucho campaign, making six appearances in midfield, three of them in the starting lineup.

The summer would be an ideal time for a swoop as Matheus turns 18 in June, paving the way for a move abroad as Brazil laws prevent the departure of footballers aged 17 and under from leaving the country.

Matheus will return to Brazil with the U20s once the Toulon tournament is over, with the final scheduled for June 8.

Liverpool are thought to be looking to bolster their defensive options this summer and with Lucas Leiva their only recognised defensive midfielder, Matheus could be a long-term solution.

What the hell is going on? We've been clamoring for our scouts to unearth hidden gems with cool names from exotic countries for years and now in the past two weeks we've been linked with more cool named far flung internationals than you can count.

We've come a long way from Paul Konchesky, Robbie Keane, Charlie Adam, etc.

Maybe these Man City scouts are alright then, I sort of assumed their scouting involved googling 'best players in the world'.

Liverpool are preparing to make a bid in the 'coming days' for Grêmio's Matheus Biteco according to a Brazilian journalist.

Porto Alegre-based journalist Luiz Pires Zini claims that the Reds will be swooping for the Grêmio youngster after impressing at the Toulon U20 tournament.

Zini also says that Liverpool have been tracking the youngster since 2012 and the Brazilian is considered one of Grêmio's top youth prospects.

Wow, I bet Suarez has got something to do with this "Biteco" company.

Eh, eh?...

Yeah but our old scouts used to just google 'mediocre players in the premiership' so its definitely an improvement

More mentions of this young lad (in Echo etc) today. He turns 18 on 28/06 and Brazilian rules state he cannot move abroad until then (or something like that).

Supposedly looked good in the Toulon tournament as a defensive midfielder and long-term successor to Lucas.

I came here wanting to say that his name is far too suggestive for Suarez....

But every fucker who posted above has chewed on that name before I had any chance....
