Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Andy Hughes as their new chief financial officer.

Hughes will manage the Premier League club's monetary operations, joining their senior management staff after previously holding positions at Hilton Hotels, Ernst and Young and Guoman and Thistle Hotels.

"I am very proud to join Liverpool Football Club - a brand that is recognised all over the world," Hughes told the club's official website.

"It's an exciting time to be joining and there is real opportunity to further develop the club's financial operations."

Liverpool have spent large sums on players in the past few years, and their intentions to submit plans to expand Anfield before the start of next season were revealed earlier this month.

Managing director Ian Ayre had previously stated Liverpool's desire to expand as a business and as a renewed force in European football.

And Ayre believes Hughes' experience will be vital to the club's growth in the coming years.

"Our financial operations are a crucial part of the club's business," he said.

"As we continue with our growth it is essential that we have the right experience in these key positions. Andy has a long track record of delivering successful results in a variety of challenging roles.

"He will be responsible for all of the club's financial management and I am delighted to announce this appointment."

We could also do with a David Dein-style operator to get us some influence at the Premier League and FA.. Ayre consistently gets snubbed by other clubs since his Bolton gaffe, the most recent occasion being a ballot from a couple of weeks ago:

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre and his Norwich counterpart David McNally were the two to miss out in yesterday’s ballot of Premier League clubs to pick their seven representatives on the FA Council.
The incumbents were all returned. Departing PL chairman Sir Dave Richards will become an honorary vice-president of the FA but it was decided by clubs that he cannot represent them on any FA group, meaning he has to stand down as chairman of the international committee.

What was the Bolton gaffe?

Always nice for employees of the club to describe us a brand recognised all over the world. Like Coke and Big Yellow Storage.

I thought you'd been appointed Mark.

What was the Bolton gaffe?

It was a silly thing a couple of years ago, he talked about LFC doing its own TV rights and argued foreign sales were really all about 'big clubs' rather than 'small clubs like Bolton'. Cue all the big clubs blasting him for upsetting their megabucks deal and cue Bolton and co blasting him for showing them no respect. The Premiership club chairmen have consistently frozen him out ever since.
