The future's looking good, isn't it ?

Suddenly, that 5-year plan doesn't seem too ridiculous anymore.

Yep. and never mentioned by the media. If it was United or Arsenal they would never stop going on about it.

Good if we can continue with some top 4 finishes over the next few years as you don't (really) get time to build a squad in England.

Finish out of the top and players soon get picked off by the bigger teams, see spurs/saints.

I like it that way.

Fucking hate it when they start backing us or cheerleadering.

Much prefer it when we fly pretty much under the radar.

I hate Rodgers 'look at me, I'm great so I am' attitude that he gets occasionally, but I'll admit it deflects attention from things like this.

Contrast it to Wenger & his dour miserable outlook always full of excuses about the squad age, experience, etc etc, & imo it works much more effectively at reducing the pressure on the side.

All that said, I'd like us to have one or two senior players in the side. When Henderson is your only regular who is classed as senior then you're lacking some vital experience. I'd like to see that changed next season, by default it can't be a striker (cos we need a pacey striker, so not old), or a rb (old full backs don't work properly the way we play), so we're kinda left with either a CB (doubtful considering Lovren's gradual return to form & transfer fee) or, more likely, a midfielder.

If we could somehow get a world class established midfielder (alonso?) with one or two years left at this level I think it'd pay dividends.

Skrtel's 30 and Lucas' 28.

Yes, a world-class midfielder (in other words, Stevie's replacement) is the first priority next season.
True. I'm discounting Lucas as I don't see him as a regular starter (Can will make that cm position his own next season).

Skrtel for me isn't a leader. He is an extremely good CB, but doesn't Marshall the defence as a leader does, never mind the rest of the team, therefore that experience doesn't have as much impact as a midfielder in a similar mould would have.

Incidentally, that Utd team (you'll never win anything with kids), had 3 or 4 proper stalwarts in it in defence & midfield, providing the experience they needed.

I think it's massively underrated in today's game, but the experienced players need to be able to also justify their place (see Lambert as an example of why experience alone isn't good enough).

United obviously don't have much in the way of Vangaalings or he would be playing them.

I must be the only one on here not particularly keen on Milner. Milner's a technically sound hard-working player who fits across CM/AM. We have three such players in Allen, Henderson and Lallana - all of whom are plenty experienced as well.

What does Milner add?

If we're signing a midfielder, get in a top class all round DM like Scheiderlin or Witsel, or get a proper CM/AM playmaker like Koke or Gundogan.

See what you're saying, but Milner can play wide far better than any of them. He can also do a more than serviceable job at the back if the need were to arise. I think he'd be a great addition to the squad.

Yeah, I see your point, and I've thought the same. He's not a DM, and he's not noticeably better than Henderson. It's not clear he'd actually get in the team at all.

But for his versatility, quality, and top level experience, I think I'd still definitely take him on a free.

I'd love Schneiderlin, Gundogan or Koke but they will cost a shitload of money. And we aren't there at all.
2 out of 3 probably doesn't want to leave either.

As said in the other thread. I'd love to sign Illaramendi. Talk of Real Madrid wanting 17,5 mill £ for him.

Milner on decent wages would be a good deal but for the reported 120k he wants I'd look elsewhere.
Still think he'll sign a new contract with City.

We should be really carefuly with the signings because 2-3 great players dont mean it will come out good. We just need a forward, provided we are able to sell one of the existing striker. Then only one top class midfileder and addition in defense. Our team chemistry is good, so lets keep it that way, no need to complicate the matter by adding unnecessary new signings.

Milner would be a good addition, the key for him would with how much he will play, though.

I'm with you. We have first teamers who can do what he does and I would rather give the likes of Rossiter, canos and wilson playing time and use the large wages he would command elsewhere.

Milner would be a great addition to the squad. I'm convinced we would have won that title if Henderson hadn't got himself suspended, which is proof enough we need cover and experience. Milner provides that, and plenty more. I'm not surprised by the repeated links, either. He seems a player that Rodgers would respect.

How old is Ming?

*realizes I can probably google this myself but why take the joy away from others?*

Yeah, I think he'll be a solid addition, both as a partner for Henderson in CM, or in a rotation with Henderson. I'm not in the camp that thinks we really need a specialist DM - I'm happy with a group of solid, all-rounded CMs with good physical strength, technical ability and decent / good pace, and a quintet of Milner, Henderson, Lucas, Allen and Can looks like such a group.

Surely if we want a specialist DM in the squad - which we do - then we just keep Lucas.

I want us to add someone to the CM position to play with Henderson/Allen, but who offers more creativity - kind of like a younger Gerrard or Alonso. (Or even Hamman).

Milner would give us a few years - while the likes if Rossiter get a chance to improve.

Also - I want our major signing for next season to be a dead ball expert - not just scoring - but corners & free kicks

We don't need a replacement for Stevie - his position is now redundant. We need :
.. a new high class DM (keep Lucas as backup),
... another CB (bring back Ilori perhaps - his technical skills and great pace may be perfect for our Back Three) or 2xCB if we let Kolo go (personally I'd keep him for his experience and the help he gives to the younger players). We need 5 CBs and fewer FBs with this system so Johnson, Manquillo and Enrique are surplus to requirements
... a replacement for Jones (Ryan is growing on me now I know he's not a midget)
... and a new striker (to replace Balo who is seems is nailed on to leave), Ojo, Ibe or Sinclair can replace Borini.
