The Greatest Irish Sportsperson Ever!

'The Greatest Irish Sportsperson Ever!' is a one hour television special that will be broadcast on RTÉ One this Christmas and will count down the TOP 10 Irish Sportspeople, as voted by YOU, the Irish public.

This is your chance to decide which sportsperson is our greatest ever.

We have produced a long line of great Olympians, footballers, hurlers, athletes, boxers, trainers and riders... but who in our pantheon of sporting greats reigns supreme? And how do the greats of today cut it with the greats of the past?

We want you to pick the individual you feel is Ireland's Greatest Sportsperson Ever! from the long shortlist of 'nominees' which we have put together... from Sonia to Padraig, from Gilesy to Christy Ring, from Brian O'Driscoll to Vincent O'Brien.

Your job is to simply VOTE for your FAVOURITE.

Once you have voted for your favourite, we'd like you to tell us what you think was the Most Memorable Moment in Irish sporting history - maybe it was Ray Houghton's stunning goal against Italy in New York in 1994 or maybe it was when Ireland finally completed the Grand Slam in 2009.

We would also like you to pinpoint the most heartbreaking 'So Near and Yet So Far Moment' in Irish sporting history - maybe it was Sonia's stomach upset at the 5,000m Olympic final in Atlanta in 1996 or possibly Wim Kieft's fluke against Packie Bonner at Euro '88. The choice is yours.

It's impossible to judge.

Aidan O Brien isn't really a sportsman is he ? He's a brilliant horse trainer but I don't think that puts him in the sportsman group.

Should George Best be in that list ?

Michelle Smith shouldn't be on that list either.

I wonder about including GAA players in it, they don't compete with the best from around the world the way most of the others did.

It'll probably go to Harrington in the end.

Stephen Roche has to be considered. Sean Kelly, Eamonn Coughlan and Sonia O'Sullivan deserve a mention.

Best striker the country has ever had and he didn't even make the list.

Says it all

Stephen Roche is a bit tainted though isn't he ?

I must have missed that, what happened?

I have no idea about Hurling but anybody with the name Chrusty Ring gets my vote.

Ahh the Irish, provide us with endless enjoyment and without a hint of irony.

Just googled it and read about the whole EPO thing. At the end of the day I doubt there has been a top cyclist not taking performance enhancing drugs over the last 50 years so his achievements although tainted are still relatively impressive but I agree he can't be voted "Greatest Ever" because of the drugs link.

He was caught taking EPO in 1993. Obviously his big success was in '87 but it casts a shadow over it.

It's one of those things though that the lads he beat were taking the same drugs, it doesn't make it right but it still gives him a bit of credibility -or does it?

Hard to say really.

But I suppose in this instance were judging him against others where there is no suspicion of drug taking (Michelle Smith excepted, and probably George Best ....) so against them he should be taken down a notch.

I would have never considered George Best Irish, am I right in that respect ?

It's a conundrum; are people from the 6 counties actually Irish? Yes, Do they want to be associated with the other 26 counties? Some do, some don't. And we're back to the religious divide again.

I possibly wouldn't include the 6 counties for this category as they would be included in a "Greatest British" poll anyway.

Never really considered Georgie as Irish myself. More of a manc. I suppose he is though. Moreso than Great British at least. *Pedant Alert* Maybe someone with more knowledge of the topic can correct me but isn't he an Irish subject of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland? *Alert over*

I suppose if George Best can be considered Irish , why not Aldo ?

McCoy is related to my Dad. Second cousins I think...

George Best was all for an all-ireland football team so I would consider him Irish.

Because he also abandoned us in our hour of need.

And Paul McGrath was better.
