The Lions

That's pretty much nailed on if Quinlan doesn't go, did he have his hearing yet ?

Don't think so (I believe the citing commissioner's just put his report in) but the way the media are referring to the whole thing over here suggests they anticipate Quinlan will be found guilty and removed from the tour party.

Its a nailed on ban of a min of 6-12 weeks.

Best got caught in a lesser incident and got 16 weeks earlier this season.

Banned Quinlan to miss Lions tour

"Munster flanker Alan Quinlan will miss the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa after he was banned for 12 weeks after being cited for eye-gouging".

The Lions have decided not to fetch a replacement for Shanklin into the squad. There's talk in the papers here of Earls, Fitzgerald or even Halfpenny being considered sufficient to fill the inside centre slot. Any views?

I'm surprised JJ personally. I hear that they mentioned the fact that the Blues and Munster not playing in the final had some effect on the decision. Its quite a small squad anyway, so i thought it was a given that they'd add another player.

Fitzgerald played a little bit at 12 - he played well for Ireland against the All Blacks at 12 but I think he's better out wider.

Can't really see the other 2 doing it well. Roberts and Flutey can both play 12 though so they should be covered. BOD could end up there too

Yeah, the majority view among the newspaper pundits I've read here was that BOD and Roberts was the probable Lions centre pairing. Interestingly enough, views were divided on who would play inside and who outside out of those two.

The more that i look at the squad, i wish that they'd taken an extra FH. We should be ok in the centres, but only taking 2 FH's is a huge gamble.

Quite a strong squad named for the 1st game.

It's not that far off now, and i can't wait.

I wouldn't put Roberts in personally.

He had a great game against the Scots, but every other 6 Nations team seemed well equipped to deal with him. The Boks will stop him pretty easily too I'd imagine.

Flutey is in pole position for 12 in my mind. He's got quick feet and good hands and regularly breaks the gain line. His defense is a bit of a question mark.

Ability-wise I'd agree, but the sheer physical challenge in S.Africa is probably weighing heavily in McGeechan's mind and those of his coaching team.

Radio says he's still going on the tour, but will join it later on. They will now be calling someone else up, but haven't said who yet. I hope it's Lewsey, who's hard as nails and versatile, and would relish a last charge at the Boks.

Ah not such bad news after all then JJ. I guess that'll be 1 forward and 1 back to be added now.

Just got to hope that none of the Leicester/Leinster boys get injured now.

Amen to that.

Incidentally you should be pulling for Lewsey too. He is mostly Welsh after all. ;)

I've never forgiven him for making that choice. I guess that World Cup winners medal helps him to sleep at night though.

To be fair i haven't seen much of Lewsey this season, so I've no idea of what form he's in.

Jerry Flannery has been ruled out of the Lions tour to South Africa due to injury.
By Telegraph staff and agencies

In the latest injury blow to the Lions, the combative Ireland hooker suffered a chipped bone in his left elbow during training this afternoon.

A scan revealed the extent of the damage and Flannery requires surgery that will prevent him from departing for South Africa with the rest of the squad on Sunday.

The Lions management have yet to name a replacement for the Munster player, who has won 31 caps for Ireland, but must choose between Ireland's Rory Best and Ross Ford of Scotland, who are on the standby list for the position.

Set-piece specialist Best, who has markedly improved his all-round game in recent seasons, was a contender to make the initial 37-strong squad despite his position behind Flannery in Ireland's pecking order.

The Ulster skipper is currently leading Ireland's tour to Canada and the United States and had been included in the starting line-up for Saturday's Test against the Canucks.

Ford was another front-rower in contention to make the original party and the abrasive 25-year-old was considered unlucky to miss out.

Flannery's injury is just the latest withdrawal following injuries to scrum-half Tomas O'Leary and centre Tom Shanklin as well as the 12-week ban on Flannery's club team-mate Alan Quinlan which was upheld today leading to the addition of Leicester's Tom Croft to the touring party.

Yeah, just heard. Best's a good player but I'd go for Ford out of those two.
[/quote]

Same here JJ. I was slightly surprised that he wasn't included in the first place.

For me, he has the most potential out of all the hookers available to the British & Irish national sides.

really ?

There's no real reason on form to bring him, but he's a good player who can play 10 or 12 so it makes sense.

He's been the biggest dissapointment in a welsh/club shirt all season. His development has been so bad at FH, that now its being mentioned that maybe fullback is going to be the slot that he's tried out in next.

The lad has so much ability its unreal, but he just seems to be lacking game intelligence.

After saying all this though, i wouldn't put it past him to go out over there and be a stand out performer.

The plus side of his call up i guess is that he is versatile enough to cover FH, Centre and Fullback.

One Irish newspaper reported that Ford got a call up too, anyone seen that mentioned elsewhere ?

There's now talk of Paterson being called in to tide the Lions over until Halfpenny flies out.

I thought Paterson might get in the original party, for his kicking if nothing else.

Well, the thread is about the Lions specifically, but since you mention it, well done Leinster. I had an inkling they might upset the odds against Munster in the semi and, once they pulled that off, I thought they'd go all the way. BOD in particular will be on the crest of a wave now.
