The Mo Contract Saga

The high wages are the problem, regardless of how good a player is. Messi, by all accounts, was bringing in more into Barcelona’s commercial kitty than he was being paid but his wages among others (and, of course, the poor footballing direction of the board ) financially destabilised the club. Ronaldo and Ramsay at Juventus, Aubameyand and Özil at Arsenal?

There’s a limit. There has to be a limit.

Should have linked it to winning the AFCON

The longer this is dragging on the more I think Salah isn't signing a new deal.
My bet is that he's either sold this coming summer or next season is his farewell season.

[article]Mohamad Salah is the first name on the team-sheet, collecting a league-topping 49,700 points to date - gleaned primarily from his chart-topping 16 goals.

Despite missing two games on international duty with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, the prolific winger has also notched nine assists - only Alexander-Arnold has carved more.

I'm much more comfortable we can now dangle Balon D'or in front of Salah and get him to agree to more reasonable terms.

I think the club is willing to pay what he is asking but they are probably reluctant to offer him more than 2 or 3 years. I'm guessing this based on absolutely nothing.....

Mohamed Salah contract leaves Liverpool with £70m Nike question
[article]What Mohamed Salah brings to Liverpool on the pitch is undeniable.

Liverpool's most prized asset has yet to commit his long term future to the Reds with the two parties still in negotiations over a new deal that would make the 29-year-old the highest paid player in Liverpool history.

Few would argue that he would deserve that title based on his form and what he brings to this Liverpool team, his £36.5m transfer fee in 2017 having turned into 148 goals, a Champions League crown and the 2020 Premier League title.

The numbers on the next Salah contract will be big, but for such an impactful player operating at the height of his powers he is now working on the very highest of levels where the money follows suit.

Salah's presence in the Liverpool team helps their cause considerably when it comes to on-pitch success, with such things as Champions League football and subsequent success in the competition worth hundreds of millions to Liverpool.

Off the pitch he has turned into an enormously marketable athlete who allows Liverpool reach into new markets. An African star and the most prominent Muslim footballer on the planet, Salah has huge commercial appeal.

And such appeal has seen him place among the top five in terms of player shirts sold in the world over the past 12 months, something that acts as a boost to the incentivised nature of Liverpool's kit deal with Nike, one that is worth a guaranteed £30m per season but that holds its true value in the 20 per cent that the Reds receive on the sale of Nike/Liverpool merchandise globally.

That is something that could make the deal worth as much as £70m per year to the Reds.

And a good chunk of those shirt sales have been driven by Salah, with data provided by the FIFA authorised Euromericas Marketing Agency showing that the Egyptian sold the fourth most shirts in 2021, with 'Salah 11' having sold 816,000.

That figure put him behind only Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski (970,000), Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo (1.05m) and Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain (1.2m). He was ahead of the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante, Kevin De Bruyne and Neymar, who all made up the top 10 list.

Speaking on Salah's commercial importance to Liverpool in October, Andrea Sartori, global head of sport for analysts KPMG, told the ECHO: "Salah is a world class player, but in football there are perhaps only four players (Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé) whose departure could significantly impact a club's commercial revenues.

"Indirectly though, it could hurt the club, if on-pitch performances deteriorate as a result of his departure.

"Salah has been the club's top scorer for all four full seasons he spent at Liverpool, and while the Reds have been conducting successful business in the transfer market in recent seasons, the risk of whether Salah's replacement could reach the same heights is certainly in the decision makers' thoughts.

"Salah’s impact on Liverpool FC's commercial streams can mainly be twofold: his significant followership and brand value increases the value of commercial deals for potential sponsors, helping the club tapping into foreign markets, as partially demonstrated by Liverpool FC's agreement with Vodafone Egypt.

"On the other hand, the main way he impacts the commercial revenues is with his on-field performances, as Salah's presence on the pitch secured them a Champions League final in his first season and the continental glory in the following season at the club, significantly increasing worldwide exposure of Klopp's men.

"Salah boasts 73m followers across six popular social media channel (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube, Weibo), which certainly falls short of Ronaldo's (596m), Messi's (376m) and Neymar’s (311m) followings.

"However, these three players are in a stratosphere on their own, and despite having much fewer followers, Salah is still one of the most popular football players in terms of global followership (15th most followed player overall).

"What makes Salah special and different to the above mentioned stars are two crucial factors. Firstly, Salah has been shining his star in the English Premier League, by far the most popular national championship worldwide.

"As such, he had an advantage in the exposure provided by the league. Secondly, Salah is the most followed African player in the world. Due to the currently relative scarcity of world class players from the continent, African fans can rally around him for support."

According to Euromericas data, Liverpool sold 1.95m shirts in 2021, behind only Bayern Munich and leaders Real Madrid. The sale of Salah shirts, in line with the data, was 42 per cent of the total.[/article]

Don't worry. Several posters on here have assured us that he's 100% signing.

Im not one of them…. Sadly. It’s a case of who’s going to blink first. I see it like this. He might sign depending on how we do in CL - That’s not his stipulation to sign that’s on FSG. Nothing will happen until May then all hell will break loose. If he does sign in the summer it will be a small extension. 2 years maybe. Then he’ll leave in the summer of 2023. Just like Suarez. Same thing. The one thing that is in our favour is there is really nowhere for him to go other than really Paris. I’d be staggered is he stayed in the PL - I wouldn’t hold your breath on him signing anytime soon.

I will be very surprised if he signs a 2 year extension. This is his chance to get a > 400K per week salary for 5 years contract. If he signs a 2 year extension, the chances of him getting a 400K contract once this new contract end reduces significantly.

I wouldn't rule out Man City though I suspect they will be in for Haaland.
If they don't get him they will be all over Mo if they think they have a chance.
I'd like to think we wouldn't sell to them but if the other option was losing him on a free then I reckon we could.

Would he really burn all his bridges by going to City? I doubt it.

Mo wants to be liked. He only needs to look at Torres to see how it goes for someone who joins a rival.

PSG or Madrid are the two most likely.

I read somewhere that Man City has told his agent that they would be interested if he were available.
Now his agent being interested in that particular move doesn't mean that Mo would be. I suppose it depends what his true motivation is for his next contract but, even though it might be unlikely I wouldn't totally rule it out.

I suppose nothing can be ruled out. In my opinion it will be Madrid. If he did go in the summer how much would he be worth? Realistically? 85m? Something like that.

EDIT : if he signed a 2 year contract extension and he goes in the summer (2023) I reckon you could add 30m to that.

Torres didn't win anything with us. I don't think he regrets leaving.

I kind of agree but don't at the same time. I think Torres wishes he could have won those things with us, but could see it wasn't going to happen.

Liverpool rely heavily on shirt sales. Their Nike deal racks up an initial £30m but it can potentially rise to as much as £70m with Liverpool making 20 per cent on the sale of the club's Nike merchandise sold globally.

In total, Liverpool sold 1.95m shirts, which was the highest in the Premier League during the last calendar year. Salah makes up for almost half of those sales with his shirt contributing to 42 per cent of Liverpool's total.

Based on that losing a player who is so integral to Liverpool's global sales could lead to FSG potentially losing profits directly, as well as indirectly thanks to being less competitive on the pitch.

You cannot attribute those Salah shirt sales directly to him being the reason that shirt was sold. What is the unknown is how many of those who bought a Salah shirt would’ve still bought one regardless.

Exactly - kids (both young and, sadly, old) buy a shirt then put their favourite player's name on it. Surprise, surprise, Mo is a favourite among kids.

If he leaves it will prompt them to buy a new kit with Diaz on the back - win-win
