Your welcome. My reverse psychology worked ;)

Well done Darren - first major in a long career, and richly deserved.

I had bets on Darren and Thomas Bjorn to finish in the top 5, so that was good!

Although I have probably only broken even, taking into account the bets that didn't come off! ::)

Get in DC backed at 150-1 nice little return... Also made up for him as he seems a top bloke an all round nice fella....a couple of drinks are deserved for this result I think.

Oh and nice one vlad, enjoy this little brucie bonus

RT @thereddazzler @Graeme_McDowell please can u settle a debate for me what football team does Darren Clarke support >> Liverpool

Fantastic stuff for the big man, and an unbelievable achievement for Northern Irish golf and sport.

How can such a small nation of two million produce so many good golfers? No work and all play (golf?) ;)

kudos enewei

I saw some people in the crowd waving the Tricolour. I have no idea what the implications were of that! ;)

All the Irish want to get a piece of the reflected glory of the Ulstermen, which is fair enough. I was certainly absolutely delighted and proud to see Padraig win his majors.

Fuck the political significance, Gmac, Darren and Rory are all proud Irishmen and Ulstermen. We can all enjoy it, and if you want to wave a flag in the process it is up to you.

McIlroy & McDowell will represent Ireland

Darren Clarke's Open Championship victory was not enough to get him into Ireland's two-man team for the World Cup in China in November.

As world number four Rory McIlroy, had the right to invite Clarke, Graeme McDowell or Padraig Harrington to be his partner, and opted for McDowell.

"G-Mac's the next highest on the rankings, so it will be me and him again," the 22-year-old said today on the eve of the Irish Open at Killarney.

Clarke moved up from 111th to 30th with his triumph at Sandwich two weeks ago, while three-major winner Harrington is now down at 64th.

McIlroy and McDowell represented Ireland - in golf the Republic and Northern Ireland come together - the last time the World Cup was staged two years ago, finishing second to Italian brothers Edoardo and Francesco Molinari.

Thanks for the explanation Slugmonster - so it's the same situation in golf as Rugby Union. They are all "West British" as a Fenian friend used to remark scornfully. ;D

Personally I wouldn't mind if they were classed as and representing Northern Ireland, but when they've been representing Ireland and when they achieve their singles accolades its hard to not feel that bit of national pride. Still though i would presume its something like the Andy Murray situation.......he's usually British for two and a half weeks at Wimbledon before crashing out only for his English fans to reveal he's actually been a scot in disguise all the time ;)

Scottish people like to say that. It is however completely false. They are a nation of fantasists who only believe what they want to believe.
