We had some right ding dong arguments all summer long over whether we should sign Downing.

There were pretty strong feelings on both sides - some people thought he was the best available and he would improve us so we had to pay whatever it took to get him. Others said they didn't think he was worth it, would prefer to play Maxi on the left and keep that 20m for when something better came along.

So my question to those in the first camp, in light of the Lucas injury, would you prefer to have played Maxi all season long and have 20m in the bank for our needs in January ? Or are you happy with how things have panned out ?

Rather have the 20m but we do have more strength in depth though. What if Maxi had got injured? Deserves to be starting by the way

During the war of Downing summer you will remember Rosco that a few of us, a brave few, a brave few with eyes and sense, were heavily defeated by those who wanted the Downing.

We lost Rosco.

This question of a thread is just devil making and you know it.... we should, those of us who fought on the side of righteousness that is, we should not dwell on it.

Leave it be.

Unspoken.

Not to be mentioned.

Ever.

His recent run of poor form is irritating, but I'll say what I said in the summer

I want him, but that's too much

I just want them to see where we were coming from.

I know Rosco, want them to see.... I know....really I do... I saw too.... its just.... the blind Rosco.... BLIND....

I feel you should move on for the good of your own mind.

I didn't want Downing. Mata and Hazard at a stretch were my choices. We got Stuart and he started off well but just petered out.

£20M well spent is better than in the bank. When will we get a proper winger at Liverpool?

Hindsight is a beautiful thing eh. Seeing as we also added Bellamy before window closed, I guess you could say we could have managed with Maxi and had 20 mil extra in the bank.
He gives us great squad depth regardless though, and you need that looking at the other top teams. He can also play on both wings, which is a big bonus and is left footed.

I think however its waaay to early for this type of thread, as Im quite confident he'll find his feet during the rest of the season. Thought he was good against City fwiw.

He can (and will) play better, don't give up on him just yet, I know its hard though...

Anyway 20 Million isn't the be all and end all nowadays, we don't shop in Tesco anymore, 20 Mill was what we was paying in intrest with those 2 clowns running the show!

As I said at the beginning of the season, a few of this season's first teamers will be next seasons bench warmers.

Our squad depth will be impressive but we must buy quality players to go directly into the starting XI

I hope its too early too.... lets see what happens, we are playing well at the minute so maybe he will calm down and settle into his stride a bit.

He DESPEREATLY need a goal though. Its hitting his confidence big time and you can see it in his finishing.

Bloody heck you could say that of half of any team we put out, if not a goal a couple of assists would do, just to get his confidence on the up.

Regardless of which camp anyone was in, nobody but nobody could have foreseen a serious injury to Lucas.

I reckon Lucas will get injured around late November 2011, probably a season ending injury (like, say an anterior cruciate injury or something). Annoying thing is, he'll be monstering the premier league by then.

I don't think it's got anything to do with someone getting injured.

It's more about the fact that we appear to have spent a substantial amount of money on someone rather average.

Downing has failed to make an impact so far, having said that though I still can see why we where in for him in the first place and as been said he's improved our squad depth in particular.

When he was subbed late on against Chelsea he had a very decent cameo, increasing pressure on their wing backs secuding we wasn't pushed further back. He was mostly dire against Citeh mind but blossomed in the last ten min of the game and almost had a goal to his name.

I'm not sure we'd be able to do much better in an instant with £20M come January as it will take time for most players to adapt in to most teams.

Having said that unless Downing improves over the next ten to twenty games we'll look back on him as a rather expensive 'flop'. On the other hand a few good games, with a few assists to Carroll-goals to his name, and he's perhaps prove his worth.

Jury is still out. In my opinion.

I still quite like Downing and think he will come good.

He has created lots of chances and has suffered from our poor goalscoring form.

His overall play is sometimes unfairly criticised because people think he was expensive (which he was). However when he plays well people are reluctant to give him any praise, sometimes looking at the negatives rather than the positives (like so many players before him i.e. Lucas, Maxi who have went through long periods of forum criticism before their value to the team was recognised). Even before he signed, people were giving him abuse about lacking pace which was absolute bollocks.

I realise I'm on my own here.

Don't worry count. You're not alone

I expect him to get better simply because he's a better player than he's showing at the moment, but he'll never be a decent signing.
