25/26 season how will we play?

The only dealing Klopp will have with gravy is pouring it on his roast dinner and mopping any left with a Yorkshire pudding.

I think we’ll look more like 442 with Flo & Szo leading the press, although more likely that Mo & Gakpo are furthest advanced.

———— Ali ————-
Frim - Ibu - Virg - Kerkez
———Grav —Mac———
———Szob—Wirtz———
——Mo—————Gak—

Szobo & Wirtz will alternate as ‘tip of the spear’

We will have moments when we have no one in a natural CF position but expect to see lots of midfield runners in to the box, especially with the full backs pushing up.

Does any top team play without a striker? Not PSG (433), Not Real (433 but 343 under Xabi), not Barca (433 or 4231). It would be a major gamble to play without a striker.

I'm not necessarily advocating this - just my perception of the team we currently have. We saw Slot utilising Szobo + Jones in this type of set up towards the end of last season, and unless we spend big on a #9 I think this is more likely than seeing Szobo on the bench for Nunez/Jota on the pitch.

I know what you mean but only Barca out of your list there play with a proper #9.

Mbappe has spent most of his career to date starting out on the left and Dembele has also played as a winger / wide forward for the most part too.

You have a point. Though both are bona fide (roaming) CFs now. Which then begs the question ... is Slot planning to convert Wirtz into a CF? In which case we lose, to some extent, his creative ability to play others in, which is what we were all excited about !

One of wirtz best attributes is progressive carries (alongside countless other things). Whyyyyyyyyyyy put him as a false 9?

I would have understood buying Cherki and playing him in that role, as he's probably as good in that kind of setup. Wirtz isn't that guy. If he could be that guy? Maybe. But why clip his wings?

4-2-3-1 as the starting positions but loads of interchanging and tactical flex in regards to who we play and how the game develops.

Wirtz as the 10.
Dom will be used more as one of the two central midfielders.

It is a conundrum. Macca and Gravy as the pivot or two deeper lying CMs. Szobo for his energy and pressing. So where does that leave Wirtz? Or are we just going to be rotating between the 5 of them (I'm including Jones as part of the rotation).

Wondering if we will go 3 at the back, with Salah and Gakpo playing like 2 strikers with Wirtz behind.

Sure we’ve been playing without a striker every time Darwin gets on the pitch…

Maybe - but I don't see Wirtz doing enough of the ground work that Szob does so pivotally for our team. Wirtz isn't part of a midfield 3.

But wirtz does cover a high volume of ground and does have one of the highest turnover in final 3rd across Europe.

Ideally less running will be required in that position as Szob was helping cover for Trent and mo, ideally this time it'll be just mo, as Frimpong has the pace to get back

We could also go for something like this:

------------ FW
----- Wirtz --------- Salah
-------- Macca -- Szobo
Kerkez ----- Grav ------- Frim
------- VVD ---- Ibou
----------- Alisson

But ultimately, this whole debate is what gave me pause in the Wirtz thread - everyone is hyped up but at the same time unclear as to how it all hangs together.

I think if we sell Diaz, then that's a strong possibility

I just can't see us getting a creator to play at the 9. Even Bobby wasn't bought for that purpose by Rodgers, klopp converted him

It's quite complicated as a mod and long time resident of a semi stagnating forum like ours knowing exactly how to feel about posters like bluebell. On the one hand you're happy someone's actually bothering to make new threads and prompt new discussion, but then you read the content of those thread's and realise they've had about as much thought and effort put into them as a piss at four in the morning.

I dunno I put a lot of effort into pissing at 4 in the morning so I don't sleepily piss on my feet in the dark

Double edged sword init?

At worst you could say it prompts debate. I'm not specifying if it's good or bad debates though. Definitely a mass one however. A debate that is. A huge debate.

Turnovers in final third is different to day tracking back and stopping an opposition full back getting a cross in.

I just don’t see how it can work without removing the creative freedom he’s played with before.

Anyway I’m sure Slot has it planned.

They don't pay me nearly enough to be involved in a mass debate with Bluebell, moron and co.

We have mods? And this forum is only semi-stagnant?

Tbf, that's the first time this forum will have even gotten a semi in recent times.
